Sunday, September 5 TWENTY– THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 8:00 AM † Doris Biehl Herter 10:00 AM People of the Parish 12:00 PM † Stanley Wadella

Monday, September 6 A Letter from Fr. Jim 8:30 AM † Juan Carlos My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Aguilera This coming Wednesday, September 8, starting at 6:30 PM, our parish is Tuesday, September 7 privileged to host “Treasures of the Church”, a traveling exhibition of . All 6:30 AM † Carol V. Nichols are invited. Because relics and their role in the Church can confuse even lifelong 8:30 AM † Piepmeyer Catholics, I thought it would be good to clarify things a little when it comes to relics.

Relics are physical objects that have a direct association with the or Wednesday, September 8 with Our Lord. They are usually broken down into three classes: Nativity of the Blessed  Mary First class relics are the body or fragments of the body of a saint, such as 8:30 AM Kevin Rowland pieces of bone, flesh, or even blood.  Second class relics are something that a saint personally owned, such as a Thursday, September 9 shirt or book (or fragments of those items). Claver, Priest  Third class relics are those items that a saint touched or that have been 6:30 AM † Logan Doucette touched to a first, second, or another third class of a saint. 8:30 AM Melanie Wieck † Throughout the history of our Church, we have venerated the relics of the saints. St. died around the year 155. Following his death, his fellow Friday, September 10 Christians recorded these events: “We took up his bones, which are more 8:30 AM † Jim Kodros valuable than precious stones and finer than refined gold, and laid them in a Saturday, September 11 suitable place, where the Lord will permit us to gather ourselves together, as we 8:30 AM † Patty McCartney are able, in gladness and joy and to celebrate the birthday of his martyrdom.”

4:30 PM † Albert Johantges So we see this veneration of the remains of a saint less than a hundred years after our Lord ascended into heaven. That tradition continues to this day Sunday, September 12 as the relics of saints are reserved with great honor and venerated by the faithful. TWENTY–FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME But it is not just in our traditions that the veneration and use of relics can 8:00 AM † Judy Murtaugh be found. We can see this practice in Scripture as well. For example, the Acts of 10:00 AM † John Connaughton the Apostles says, “So extraordinary were the mighty deeds God accomplish at 12:00 PM People of the Parish the hands of Paul that when face cloths or aprons that touched his skin were applied to the sick, their diseases left them and the evil spirits came out of † Deceased them” (Acts 19:11-12).

In each of those instances, God brought about healing through the use of a material object connected to some holy person. It is very important to note, however, that the cause of the healing is God. The relics are a means through which He acts. Relics do not contain a power that is their own, a power separate from God. Any good that comes about through a relic is God’s doing.

By honoring the relics of saints, we are giving thanks to God for the “Faith and prayer. These are our saint’s holy witness. In the presence of the relics we recall the holy lives of the weapons and our supports.” saints and we pray for the grace to run the race as they did, and reach the goal - St. John Bosco and purpose of our lives, eternity with God in Heaven.

Jesus said, "Let the children come to Me, and do not prevent them; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." (Matthew 19:14) The Family Holy Hour is a weekly opportunity to do that and not feel so concerned about your children being too loud or squirmy in church. Beginning Thursday, September 9th from 11 AM-12 noon, bring your children to come pray for as much or as little of the hour as you like. There will be a small activity box (on the large table in the back of the church) for families with young children to use. It helps to also bring some books, especially any that are faith related, for your children to look through or read. There are many graces for parents and children in praying before the Blessed Sacrament. Maybe try saying a decade of the together. We hope that many families will take this opportunity to pray before Our Lord and grow in their relationship with Jesus. Any questions, please contact Debby Kellner or Debbie Krzmarzick at [email protected].

SEPTEMBER 5, 2021 • TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Family Faith Time September 5, 2021-23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time 35:4-7a • James 2:1-5 • Mark 7:31-37 They were exceedingly astonished, and they said, “He has done all things well. He makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.” —Mark 7:37

I have never seen the inside of my ears...but all I hear are good things! ☺ Sharing Stories: In today’s Gospel, we read about a fantastic miracle Jesus performed. He restored a man’s hearing and speech. Do you know someone who is sick or hurt right now? How excited would you be if Jesus healed that person right before your eyes? It would be hard not to shout your excitement to let everyone know the good news!

Connecting with Scripture: Jesus still performs miracles every day, and often we don’t even notice. Place your hand on your wrist and feel your blood pumping through your body. Or maybe stare at a black and white image for about 30 seconds; then close your eyes and see how the image is now reversed. It is pretty amazing that God created our bodies to work the way they do. Take notice today and see how many astonishing things God has done and is still doing!

Prayer: Dear Lord, help us to be attentive to Your greatness and be grateful for the miracles You perform all around us.

Dig Deeper: What are some miraculous things God has done for our family?
