Canada's population estimates: Subprovincial areas, July 1, 2018 Released at 8:30 a.m. Eastern time in The Daily, Thursday, March 28, 2019 Population growth in Canada's urban areas fuelled by permanent and temporary immigration Canada continues to become more urbanized with 26.5 million people living in a census metropolitan area (CMA) on July 1, 2018. Growth in large urban areas (+1.8%) outpaced the rest of the country (+0.6%). Canada's three largest CMAs—Toronto, Montréal and Vancouver—are now home to over one-third of Canadians (35.7%). Today, Statistics Canada is releasing subprovincial population estimates as of July 1, 2018, including census metropolitan areas, census agglomerations, census divisions and economic regions. Permanent and temporary immigration is the key driver of population growth in urban Canada. This trend is linked to higher targets for permanent immigration, as defined by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Moreover, various programs stimulate the admission of many temporary workers and foreign students. Growth in some census metropolitan areas in Ontario outpace growth in the West Ontario was home to the fastest growing CMAs from July 1, 2017, to July 1, 2018, with Peterborough (+3.1%), Kitchener–Cambridge–Waterloo (+2.6%), Ottawa–Gatineau (Ontario part) and Windsor (+2.5% each), as well as London (+2.4%) leading the way. Population growth in Alberta's CMAs continues to be affected by the downturn in commodity production that began in 2014 and the resulting rise in unemployment rates. For the third consecutive year, the CMA of Calgary was not among the top 10 for population growth in Canada. -

It is being increasingly applied for both private and public benefits including business and trade as well as various public sectors, not to mention its crucial role in research and innovative technologies. No modern government could conduct its normal functions and deliver its services and implement its development agenda without relying on good quality statistics. The key role of statistics is more visible and engraved in the planning and development of every successful nation state. In fact, the use of statistics is not only national but also regional, international and transnational for organisations and agencies that are driving social, economic, environmental, health, poverty elimination, education and other agendas for planned development. Starting from stocktaking of the state of the health of various sectors of the economy of any nation/region to setting development goals, assessment of progress, monitoring programs and undertaking follow-up initiatives depend heavily on relevant statistics. What Does Neets Mean and Why Is the Concept So Easily
What does NEETs mean and why is the concept so easily misinterpreted? Technical Brief No.1 Introduction The share of youth which are neither in employment nor in education or training in the youth population (the so-called “NEET rate”) is a relatively new indicator, but one that is given increasing importance by international organizations and the media. The popularity of the “NEET” concept is associated with its assumed potential to address a broad array of vulnerabilities among youth, touching on issues of unemployment, early school leaving and labour market discouragement. These are all issues that warrant greater attention as young people continue to feel the aftermath of the economic crisis, particularly in advanced economies. From a little known indicator aimed at focusing attention on the issue of school drop-out among teenagers in the early 2000s, the indicator has gained enough weight to be proposed as the sole youth-specific target for the post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 8 to “Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all”. Within the Goal, youth are identified in two proposed targets: (i) by 2030 achieve full and productive employment and decent work for all women and men, including for young people and persons with disabilities, and equal pay for work of equal value, and (ii) by 2020 substantially reduce the proportion of youth not in employment, education or training (NEET). It is the author’s opinion that the NEET rate is an indicator that is widely misunderstood and therefore misinterpreted. The critique which follows is intended to point out some misconceptions so that the indicator can be framed around what it really measures, rather than what it does not.
