Sound Recordings sumably his own edition of the work which incorporates some cuts, reworkings, and harmonic alterations. While admittedly in the tradition of his time, this practice seems regrettable today, and mars an otherwise impressive recording. The Romanze of Schumann suits the pianist prefectly; his rubati breathe with out exaggeration. One would certainly like to hear more of his recordings of this composer. The Weber Perpetuum Mobile and Tausig's arrangement of Invitation to the Dance are, predictably, technically spectacular. But in the latter it is the pian ist's elegance and style that are the most memorable. The work is presented as a wonderful dance, not an excuse for technical bombast. One should also mention the charm the artist brings to Beethoven's little rondo. The Debussy and Ravel works certainly profit from Moiseiwitsch's technique and ear for color, though artistically he seems more at home in the nineteenth century. There are a few disappointments, such as the Barcarolle, which seems rather fast and uninflected, with an opaque tonal quality that is most unusual for this performer. Most surprisingly, Mendelssohn's delightful E Minor Scherzo is not under very good technical control. But these are minor complaints when compared with the overall quality of the collection. APR provides their usual high level of documentation, featuring recording dates, original catalog and matrix numbers, and a most informative appreciation by Bryan Crimp. The transfer work is excellent. There is some surface noise, but fortunately the excessive filtering that has deadened the sound of so many historic recordings appears not to have been applied. -

Bluegrass Music Association of Maine Winter 2020 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF BLUEGRASS BOOKS ABOUT BLUEGRASS MUSIC by Stan Keach I can think of three reasons why writing a short article covering books about bluegrass music might be a good idea for the winter newsletter: 1. There’s just not much current “news” about bluegrass music — not here in Maine, and not anywhere. Bands are mostly pretty inactive; there are no jams. 2. Some people have more time to read than usual, because there are no live concerts right now, no festivals, no jams. And, though I think a lot of bluegrass fans don’t realize this, there are many excellent books available about our fa- vorite subject. 3. If we can get this edition of The Bluegrass Express out early enough, it may spur a few Bill Monroe and Earl Scruggs on the Grand Ole Opry, Dec. 8, 1945 people to buy a book or 2 for their favorite blue- grass music fans for a holiday gift. Ballard Born and raised on Chestnut Mountain in Wilkes County, North Carolina, James “Jim” Shumate (1921-2013) was a pioneering bluegrass fiddler. His position at the inception of bluegrass places him as a significant yet understudied musician. Shumate was a stylistic co-creator of bluegrass fiddling, synthesizing a variety of existing styles into the developing genre during his time performing with some of the top names in bluegrass in the 1940s, including Bill Monroe in 1945 and Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs in 1948. While the "big bang" of bluegrass is considered to be in 1946, many elements of the bluegrass fiddle style were present in Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys prior to 1945. Jim Shumate’s innovative playing demonstrated characteristics of this emerging style, such as sliding double-stops (fingering notes on two strings at once) and syncopated, bluesy runs. -

Preliminary Schedule- Subject to Change Guide to “Skill Levels” Skill Levels: N: Novice B: Beginner AB: Advancing Beginner I: Intermediate A: Advanced These abbreviations are often combined. N-B means Novice to Beginner; AB-I means Advancing Beginner to Intermediate; etc. Below is a description of each skill level. Please keep in mind that there’s some overlap between levels. During registration on Friday, you may want to attend "Find Your Level" where instructors advise campers, one-on-one, on their level. Novices (N) are absolute beginners, just starting out. They may have only recently acquired an instrument, don’t know how to tune and have yet to learn any technique. Beginners (B) are able to tune and have learned a few basic techniques, a couple chords, maybe a rudimentary picking method. They may know a few songs but still don’t pick out tunes on their own or have much experience playing with other people. Advancing Beginners (AB) have been practicing for some months, perhaps a year. They’re comfortable tuning and have command of fundamental techniques. They’ve been learning to play simple melodies and can play along with a number of tunes and may even have started jamming. Intermediates (I) have likely been jamming on a regular basis. They’re familiar with a sizeable repertoire, recognize chord changes and play solos routinely. They may not yet play up to speed and may still need to work on their timing and tone as well as their understanding of music theory. Many read tab but could use help arranging tunes on their own and more experience improvising. -
