2 Lent 2020

THANK YOU! Thank you to all who attended the parish mission with Deacon Harold Burke-Sivers. It was an excellent lead-in to Lent, causing us to reflect on our inner lives and prepare our hearts for this season. LENT 2020 Lent begins this Wednesday, February 26. Lent is an opportunity to grow in faith and discipline, and thus to grow in our free will. The Catechism of the states: “Jesus’ temptation [in the desert] reveals the way in which the Son of God is Messiah, contrary to the way Satan proposes to him and the way men wish to attribute to him. This is why Christ vanquished the Tempter for us: ‘For we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sinning.’ By the solemn forty days of Lent the Church unites herself each year to the mystery of Jesus in the desert.” (CCC 540). During Lent, we make resolutions to stretch ourselves in the areas of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. As we enter this holy season, please note: • St. Francis of Assisi will have Masses at 8:00 a.m., noon, 5:30 p.m., and 7:30 p.m. on Ash Wednesday, February 26. Ashes will only be given out during the scheduled Mass times. • Stations of the Cross will be held on Fridays during Lent at 6:15 p.m. in the church following Mass and Evening Prayer.

• Lent is the perfect opportunity to begin attending the Liturgy of the Hours at SFA. In particular, Fr. Jarrod invites you to join him at 3:10 p.m. Daytime Prayer (Saturdays 8:30 a.m.; Sundays 2:00 p.m.) or 9:10 p.m. Night Prayer. Daytime Prayer ends just before St. Francis School lets out; it’s a perfect time for parents wanting to create a new habit of prayer for Lent! Night prayer is also a habit disrupter. At a time of night when we can fall into temptation or loneliness, why not come pray in community? • St. Francis has ample opportunities for Lenten studies and groups. Kapaun’s Men (evening session), Financial Peace University, and Fighting for Your Marriage all begin this week. Walking with Purpose and the morning session of Kapaun’s Men are already underway. Generations of Faith (March 15), the men’s ACTS retreat (February 27 to March 1), and the diocesan men’s conference, Man Fully Alive (March 28), all fall during Lent as well. Be on the lookout for more information about these events. May you have a blessed, fruitful Lent. PRAY - ADORATION CHAPEL

He is living there. He wants us to speak to Him! SAVE THE DATE: GENERATIONS OF FAITH We are in need of adorers for the following time: Date: March 15  Tuesdays, 8–9 a.m. (2 needed) Topic: of Calcutta If you would like to sign up for a weekly perpetual adoration hour, please call Jenny Speaker: Fr. John Lanzrath Morgan at 721–8871 or Sandy Rongish at 990– In Francis’ homily of St. Teresa of 6647 to sign up. Calcutta, also known as Mother Teresa, he said, “Mercy was the salt which gave flavor to her work; it was the light which shone in the darkness of the many who no longer had tears to shed for their poverty and suffering.” He added, “May she be your model of holiness.” This spring’s Generations of Faith session is scheduled for Sunday, March 15, at 5:00 p.m. Fr. John Lanzrath, pastor of St. Catholic Church in El Dorado, Kansas, will be sharing his personal experience working alongside the present-day Teresa of Calcutta. Please join us as we learn more about Mother Teresa’s example and teaching during our next Generations of Faith, an opportunity for fellowship and intergenerational spiritual formation. The evening begins at 5:00 p.m. with hors d’oeuvres followed by our speaker and closes out by 7:30 p.m. after a short prayer service. Stay tuned for more information. .
