Overview

Population & In 2010, Ainsdale’s estimated population was 12,101 this has decreased since 2001 by 4.88% (622), and at a greater rate than the borough Housing as a whole. There are slightly more females than males. There are lower proportions of children and working age people here than across the borough, with higher numbers of older people. Ainsdale has a lower proportion of Registered Social Landlord (RSL) housing (9.4%) as

compared with Sefton at 12.9% along with lower percentages of vacant properties (1.6%) compared to the borough percentage (2.8%). Deprivation & None of the eight Lower Super Output Areas (LSOA) within Ainsdale are within the most deprived 10% of areas nationally, and relative Child Poverty deprivation levels for 2010 within the ward have decreased from 2004. One Ainsdale LSOA is in the worst 20% nationally for deprivation affecting older people; deprivation affecting older people has increased when compared to 2004. Child poverty is relatively low in the ward with 14.8% of the child population living with living in poverty.

Worklessness The level of benefits dependency in the ward is lower than across the borough, with one in six working age residents claiming benefits, and & Benefits there has been an increase of the rates year on year (0.3%). Latest available figures show a year on year rise of 0.2% for JSA claimants; there are 60, 18-24 year old claimants which represent 30% of all claimants in the ward, the number rose by 4.9%. There are five JSA claimants in the ward for every Job Centre Plus vacancy; this is lower than the borough and national rates.

Employment In 2001, 76.7% of residents within the Ainsdale ward were employed; this is higher than the borough rate. Managers and senior official roles & Income are most common employment type in Ainsdale, accounting for 18% of all occupations. The average weekly wage in the Constituency at £409.90 this is 12% lower than Bootle and 22.5% lower than Sefton Central Constituency. On average males in the Southport Constituency earn 20% more than females. Overall British Crime Disorder & Survey (BCS) Crimes and Anti Social Behaviour (ASB) incidents decreased. Six of the BCS categories have increased, theft of a pedal Environmental cycle showed the biggest increase (300%). Criminal Damage offences are still the biggest concern in the ward. Only one of the ASB Issues categories showed an increase, vehicle nuisance – 28% (5). Rowdy / inconsiderate behaviour has become more of an issue in the ward making up 62% of all the ASB calls compared to 57% the previous year. As with BCS and ASB counts, overall environmental issues reduced in Ainsdale by 10%. Accumulation of refuse (which showed an increase of 35.7%) remains the most prominent environmental issue within Ainsdale, and accounts for over a third of all Environmental calls for service.

Education Ainsdale’s average educational attainment has shown overall increases in the percentage of pupils achieving Level 4 or above in KS2 both English and maths. In 2011, the attainment rates for the secondary school were higher than the Sefton and national averages. Average overall absence rates along with average persistent absence rates in Ainsdale are lower than the national and Sefton levels. Ainsdale has an equivalent percent of pupils eligible for free school meals compared to national figures but a lower rate than the borough.

Health & 12.2% of Ainsdale ward residents are smokers and over half the population are overweight or obese. However, a far greater proportion of Alcohol residents achieve both the weekly recommended amount of exercise and daily intake of fruit and vegetables than the national averages. By Misuse year 6 (ages 10 – 11) 20% of Ainsdale ward children are obese; this is lower than the borough but higher than national rates. Although residents assess themselves as being in good or very good health, life expectancy for people living in the area for both males and females is higher than the borough and national averages. The Indices of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) measures levels of deprivation, across seven domains, nationally at Lower Super Output Area (LSOA) level. This provides a mean score and ranking allowing areas to be compared relatively to other areas.

19.5% (37) of Sefton's LSOA’s fall within the worst affected 10% of areas nationally, one of which falls within the Ainsdale ward.

One of the worst affected 38 LSOA (top 20% in borough) areas across the borough is within Ainsdale ward. This means that approximately 10.4% (355) of Ainsdale’s residents aged 65 and over live in areas in the most deprived nationally.

Child Poverty is defined as: Children living in families in receipt of either out of work or tax credits, whose reported income is less than 60 per cent of the median income or in receipt of Income Support or (Income-Based) Job Seekers Allowance, divided by the total number of children in the area (determined by Child Benefit data)

One of Ainsdale’s LSOAs is the least affected this means this LSOA has the least number of children living in poverty in the borough.

A further two Ainsdale LSOAs are in the least affected 10% (19) LSOA areas across the borough.

None of the LSOAs in Ainsdale have rates of 40% or more children living in poverty. The highest effected LSOA has 32.8%.

Worklessness & Benefits Claimants

The number of working age people in Ainsdale ward claiming benefits is 990. At 14.7% the number of Ainsdale claimants is lower than the Sefton, regional and national rates (19.4%, 18.2% and 15% respectively).

Figures for February 2012 show the total rate of claimants in Ainsdale has increased by 0.3% (a count of 15) since February 2011, this is in line with the increase in rates seen in the borough as a whole (0.3%).

Employment Support Allowance (ESA) and Incapacity Benefit, make up 48% of all working age claimants, however the latest available figures show the rate of claimants of these benefits has reduced slightly by 0.1% (an actual count reduction of 5) since the same period in the previous year. This is equal to the reduction of 0.1% seen across the borough.

Figures released for July 2012 show there are currently 205 Job Seekers Allowance claimants (ag ed 18 to 64) in Ainsdale, a reduction of just 4.65% (10) on July 2011. There are 70, 18-24 year old claimants this has risen by 16.7% from 60 to 70 during the same period and now over a third of all JSA claimants in the ward.

Within Ainsdale there are currently five JSA claimants for every Job Centre Plus vacancy (215), this is less that of Sefton (8 per vacancy) and but over the national rate (5 per vacancy)
