Responsible To: Head of Lighting

Responsible for: Apprentices

Contract: Fixed Term to 12 September 2021

Salary: £505 per week plus subsistence where applicable

LIGHTING TECHNICIAN

A seasonal post in the production lighting department working under the HOD and deputy across the Festival and Minerva Theatres and other performance spaces as required.

The Lighting Technician is an employee of Chichester Festival Theatre.

JOB PURPOSE

Providing first class support to visiting lighting designers and creative staff and working closely with the full time team, to include rigging, operation, maintenance and construction skills.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Plot and operate lighting equipment for rehearsals and performances as required in liaison with the lighting programmer, , Head of Lighting and Deputy • Rig, check, and focus lighting and video equipment and set up equipment for fit- ups, rehearsals, changeovers and performances • Design and build electrical and mechanical lighting effects and props as required using individual, creative and technical skills, in conjunction with other departments where appropriate • Ensure that electrically-operated effects are set up and operated during performances • Write up and maintain clear and concise notes of all performance-related duties enabling other staff to cover without prior knowledge of the production. All these notes should be kept up to date and a copy held with the Head of Lighting

• Receive, collect and load/off-load lighting and ancillary equipment as required. Collect and return equipment from and to storage areas. Store equipment in an organised manner • Ensure that the required pyrotechnic devices as supplied are correctly connected. Initiate use of pyrotechnic devices on during performance following training or instruction • Ensure production lighting is correctly set up according to the creative requirements of the lighting designer/director • Carry out first-line maintenance of all production lighting, video and related equipment, in accordance with manufacturers' recommendations and training received • Carry out first line maintenance of non-production lighting within, or related to, the theatres, i.e. house, working, side/rear lighting, or similar • Ensure that lighting used is deployed in a clean, orderly and tidy condition and to take appropriate care of all items and ensure that all lighting workshops, control rooms and lighting areas are kept clean and tidy • Be in attendance at rehearsals and public performances and events as required • Check and prepare CFT and/or hired equipment for use in-house or at an outside venue to be used by the CFT. Ensure that all relevant documentation is correct • Connect power to equipment used on stage or in rehearsal rooms for productions and rehearsals • To take a proactive and supportive approach to working with apprentices and junior staff members • Undertake training as required; instructing others in the use of technical equipment • Ensure that all working and storage areas are kept safe and tidy • Wear protective clothing and footwear when required • Ensure that equipment is left in a safe and secure condition at the end of each performance. Ensure a safe working environment is maintained in technical areas and other areas • Assist with Get-ins, Fit-ups & Get-outs • Undertake Portable Appliance Testing further to CFT training as required

This list of responsibilities is not exhaustive and the employee will be required to perform duties outside of this as operationally required and at the discretion of the Head of Lighting.

The job will at times require unsociable working hours.

LIGHTING TECHNICIAN

PERSON SPECIFICATION

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA • Experience of lighting control systems, with a good working knowledge of ETC Eos • Knowledge of fundamental electrical practice and theory • Experience in , including the rigging and focusing of luminaires, and other equipment, ideally in a repertoire environment • Experience of programming and operating lighting including with automated fixtures • A sympathetic approach to creative concepts and the ability to realise the requirements of lighting designers, designers and directors • Experience of theatrical dimming systems • Knowledge of current DMX and Ethernet control protocols • Experience of lighting fixtures, both generic and automated • Experience of maintenance and repair of lighting fixtures • Experience of technical theatre in a producing environment • Excellent punctuality and good time management • Computer literacy in Word and Excel • A practical knowledge of LOLER, PUWER and other relevant Health and Safety regulations • The ability to communicate with staff at all levels • The ability to work well under pressure • Good communication skills – both written and verbal • Good at working in a team • Flexible approach to working, including the ability to work unsocial hours • An ability to work at height using appropriate access equipment safely • Interest in and commitment to making theatre accessible to all community sectors, and to CFT’s Equal Opportunities Policy

DESIRABLE CRITERIA • Technical drawing skills • CAD experience • Experience of setting up pyrotechnic effects. The safe firing of these, or any other related effects. • Experience of working with video, projectors and media servers • IOSH training • IT and networking experience • Full UK Drivers Licence • Formal technical theatre qualification • Video/Projection experience

FURTHER INFORMATION

This post is part of Chichester Festival Theatre’s Production department and is based at Chichester. Flexible working will be required according to workload and will include regular evening and weekend working. There will be some travel outside of Chichester, mainly to London.
