AALS: The Association of American Law Schools ABA: Biolchini Hall: (pronounced “Bee-ol-kee-nee”) it is the part of the Law School that is north of the archway and is the home of Admissions, Communications, Alumni Relations, and the Kresge Law Library BLSA: (pronounced “balsa”) Black Law Students Association CCHR: Center for Civil and Human Rights CDO: Career Development Office The Commons: NDLS eatery, located above the archway between Biolchini and Eck Depo Skills: Deposition Skills for students Eck Hall: it is the part of the Law School that is south of the archway and the home of most classrooms and faculty, and administrative offices *note: there are multiple buildings on campus named “Eck” so visitors may need extra direction Emeritus: (of the former holder of an office, especially a college professor) having retired but allowed to retain their title as an honor. Father Mike Show: a student-run event held in the spring which includes an evening of music and comedy that spotlights the Law School’s talent and raises money for scholarships. HeinOnline: 50 million pages of legal research material, accessible online through Kresge Library The Hoynes Code: An academic code system governing , including a compilation of faculty resolutions and administrative regulations. HLSA: (pronounced “halsa”) Hispanic Law Students Association ITA: Intensive Trial Advocacy program that takes place in august and January during the week before regular classes begin. J.D.: stands for (J.D. or JD), is the degree that most of our students are studying

Journals: American Journal of Jurisprudence (Natural Law Institute) The Natural Law Institute, a function of the Notre Dame Law School, was established in 1947. The Journal of Legislation contains articles by both public policy figures and distinguished members of the legal community and also publishes notes written by members of the staff. JICL: Notre Dame Journal of International and Comparative Law The mission of the Journal of International and Comparative Law is to provide a forum of discussion for international, comparative, and human rights law and to educate students about international legal issues. JLEPP: Notre Dame Journal of Law, Ethics and Public Policy The Notre Dame Journal of Law, Ethics and Public Policy is unique among legal periodicals because it directly analyzes law and public policy from an ethical perspective. The Notre Dame Law Review was founded in 1925 and was known as the Notre Dame Lawyer until the name was changed in 1982. It is published five times a year by our students and affords qualified students an invaluable opportunity for training in precise analysis of legal problems and in clear and cogent presentation of legal issues. J.S.D.: Doctor of Juridical Science, this program is designed especially for people who wish to pursue an academic career in law and who seek additional education beyond the LL.M. degree level. ACE: Alliance for Catholic Education Located in Carole Sandner Hall (next to , behind the Dome), ACE is a Notre Dame program that strives to sustain, strengthen, and transform Catholic schools. ACE sends recent college graduates to teach in Catholic elementary and secondary schools across the country. Many Notre Dame students apply for and participate in ACE. Rectors are often asked to write recommendations. AnTostal An annual week-long celebration of the last week of class, put on by the Student Union Board (SUB). There are activities and giveaways each day of the week. Some halls sponsor or host activities that are part of AnTostal. AiM Assets in Maintenance, The AiM work order system is used by Building Services. The system through which work orders are made, found at fixit.nd.edu including Maintenance, Utilities and Warehouse and Delivery. AIM: Applied Investment Management/at ND part of Business College BP: Breen-Phillips Hall A residence hall located on North Quad. Their mascot is the Babes. COMO: Coleman-Morse Center Located on South Quad between the Knights of Columbus Building and Badin Hall. Campus Ministry and First Year of Studies are located in this building. Students also use the COMO lounge as a study space. CSC: Center for Social Concerns Located in Geddes Hall (next to the library), the CSC provides community-based learning courses, community-based research, and service opportunities for students and faculty. The CSC also holds monthly meetings for all hall service commissioners. CSC: Congregatio a Sancta Cruce, The Congregation of Holy Cross The religious order of priests and brothers founded by Fr. Basil Moreau that administers the University of Notre Dame. Concur: travelND is a comprehensive program that covers the travel and expense reimbursement process. Individuals will use travelND/Concur to reconcile any business expenses incurred. D2: The student parking lot located across from Stepan fields, near the library. D6: The student parking lot located behind the Rock.

D.A.R.T.: Direct Access Registration by Terminal The program through which students register for the next semester’s classes (occurs in November & April). It is also used as a verb, i.e. “I’m DART-ing tomorrow at 10am. Wish me luck!” DEBART: Debartolo Hall Classroom building where many undergraduate classes are held. It is also often the location of University-wide hall staff training in August. Domer Any Notre Dame student or alumnus/a. DPAC: Debartolo Performing Arts Center Located across the street from the bookstore, DPAC hosts many film, theater, dance, and music events. duLac: Student Guide to Campus Life This manual (found online; hard copies are provided to hall staff) contains all of the information students need to know about life at Notre Dame: important phone numbers, student services, and University policies. It is important to review duLac and know what it contains. Endeavor Human Resources’ program for goal setting and performance reviews. This is where you will input your SMART goals, as well as your mid-year and end of the year self-evaluations. Heather will also input her mid-year and end of the year evaluation of your performance. Endeavor can be accessed from your homepage on InsideND. Fieldhouse Mall Open area between Cavanaugh Hall and the Stonehenge fountain, near Lafun. Many events are held here, especially in warm weather. Fish Bowl An open study area on the first floor of used for group study. It was renovated in 2012. Flex Points $355 per semester that accompanies the Flex-14 meal plan that most students (and all rectors) have. Flex points can be used at any campus eateries, including Starbucks, Pizza Hut/Taco Bell (new this year), Greenfields Café, and Café de Grasta. FOG: Fisher-O’Hara-Grace Graduate Residence A residence community located on the northeast side of campus. It is home to graduate and professional students. FYO: First Year Orientation More commonly referred to as Frosh-O, this is a program that occurs the weekend before classes begin in August. It is meant to introduce students to their new residence hall communities, prepare them for their academic obligations, and orient them to the University in general.

FYS: First Year of Studies All first-year students are enrolled in the College of the First Year of Studies. They will enter their respective colleges based on major (Architecture, Arts and Letters, Business, Engineering, and Science) in their sophomore year. FYS is located in the Coleman-Morse Center. GL-ez: General Ledger General ledger online look-up tool tool. It provides easy access to hall financial information, including balances, deposits, transfers, and withdrawals. This is the tool for keeping track of hall finances, and is accessible through InsideND. God Quad Home to the Dome, Basilica, Lafun, Sorin College, and Walsh Hall. Grab ‘n Go Convenient brown bag breakfast, lunch, or dinner. In South Dining Hall, Grab ‘n Go is located in the basement. In North Dining Hall, Grab ‘n Go is located on the far left side (enter through the doors nearest Haggar Hall, at the end of North Quad). GRC: The Gender Relations Center Located in the Lafortune Student Center, the GRC designs and implements programs about healthy relationships, gender, and sexuality consistent with the Catholic character of the University. It creates dialogue on campus by collaborating with student clubs, other departments at Notre Dame and community organizations in South Bend. HPC: Hall Presidents Council An organization under Student Government comprised of the presidents of each residence hall and an executive cabinet. HPC discusses upcoming campus events, and provides input on campus issues. HPC meets every Tuesday evening. The HPC advisor is Amy Geist. HR: Human Resources InsideND: inside.nd.edu A portal for many of the online programs you will use in your work as a rector. There are links to Endeavor, Ultratime, email, the work order system, etc. You can also access information about your pay and other employment-related matters on InsideND. JACC: Joyce Athletic and Convocation Center Houses numerous campus events, including the opening All-School Mass in August, men’s and women’s basketball games, volleyball games, concerts, Baraka Bouts, and . JPW: Junior Parents’ Weekend Traditionally held on the third weekend in February, the juniors host their parents for a special visit. Each residence hall holds a parents’ luncheon on the Saturday of JPW. Lafun: Lafortune Student Center Home to several food vendors, Lafun is a popular gathering place for students. It contains Starbucks, Subway, Burger King, Pizza Hut/Taco Bell (new this year!), and the Huddle Mart, a convenience store. Lafun also houses several Student Affairs offices, including the GRC, MSPS, and SAO.

Library Circle Pick up/drop off area on the east side of Hesburgh library. This is also where Transpo buses and shuttles pick up students. Main Circle Pick up/drop off area at the end of Notre Dame Avenue, between the Law School and Alumni Hall. Michiana The region along the / border, including South Bend. Mod Quad Located near the Hesburgh library and behind North Dining Hall, this quad is home to Knott, Pasquerilla East, Pasquerilla West, and Seigfried Halls. MSPS: Multicultural Student Programs and Services Located in the Lafortune Student Center, MSPS administers the programs and services specifically designed to assist with the retention and academic success of traditionally underrepresented students. The office also serves as a vehicle for students to explore issues of diversity by sponsoring cultural programs, advising ethnic or traditionally underrepresented organizations, and serving as a multicultural resource center. NDFCU: Notre Dame Federal Credit Union The bank on campus. All hall bank accounts are housed at the Credit Union. NDH or North: North Dining Hall The dining hall located on North Quad, between Farley Hall and Haggar Hall. NDSP: Notre Dame Security Police The police force on campus, located in Hammes-Mowbray Hall (across from Flanner and Grace Halls and next to the power plant). Rectors work closely with NDSP on many matters. netID Computer ID name that, along with your password, gives you access to your ND email, InsideND, SAOnline, and other resources. North Quad Home to BP Hall, Cavanaugh Hall, Farley Hall, , Stanford Hall, and Zahm House. OADE: Office of Alcohol and Drug Education Coordinates the drug and alcohol abuse prevention and student education efforts on campus, for both undergraduate and graduate students. Per University policy, rectors send students to OADE for education after their first in-hall intoxication incident. OADE is also an excellent resource for in-hall educational programming on alcohol and drugs. Office of the Controller: The Controller's Group is a dedicated team of professionals committed to serving the financial needs of our stakeholders by providing consistent, timely, and accurate information. O’Shag: O’Shaugnessy Hall Located at the end of South Quad, near Debartolo and the football stadium, this building houses the College of Arts and Letters, as well as many classrooms. Parietals The visiting hours of the hall. Opposite-sex guests may be in the building from 9am-12am during the week, and from9am-2am on Friday and Saturday. PE: Pasquerilla East Hall A residence hall located on Mod Quad (behind North Dining Hall, near the D2 parking lots and the library). Their mascot is the Pyros. PW or P-Dub: Pasquerilla West Hall A residence hall located on Mod Quad (behind North Dining Hall, near the D2 parking lots and the library). Their mascot is the Purple Weasels. Quarter Dogs Hot dogs served in Lafun after midnight on weeknights, costing (you guessed it) 25 cents. RCRs: Room Condition Reports These reports must be filled out at the beginning of every year, and whenever a resident moves out and/or moves into a room. RAs fill out these reports, noting the condition of the room at the beginning of the year, and any damage that has been done after the residents move out. RecSports Administers intramural and interhall sports on campus, maintains recreational facilities on campus, and offers fitness classes and personal trainer services. RMS: Residential Management System The online program used by the Office of Housing to place students in rooms. RMS is used by hall staff at the beginning of the year to check in residents as they arrive, and during room picks in the spring, to place students in rooms for the following fall. The Rock: Rockne Memorial Gymnasium Located at the foot of South Quad, the Rock houses workout facilities and classroom for first- year PE classes. It is open to all students, faculty, and staff. Rolfs or RSRC: Rolfs Sports Recreation Center Located near the JACC and the Jordan Hall of Science, it is the workout facility that most students use. It is open to all students, faculty, and staff. Sakai – ND’s electronic blackboard system where announcements, assignments, test grades, etc can be posted for each course. SAO: Student Activities Office The members of this office work closely with student leaders across campus, including Hall Presidents and Senators. They can help you with Hall Council issues, and with your hall budget. This office is also responsible for approving hall apparel sales, campus-wide activities, concession stands, and dances. SAO also manages several venues on campus, including Lafortune and .

SAOnline: sao.nd.edu The computer system through which students request Student Activities’ approval for events. Hall events that must go through the SAOnline process include: any events open to the entire campus, apparel sales, concession stands, and dances. The rector must approve the request in SAOnline before the request will be sent forward to Student Activities. SDH or South: South Dining Hall Dining hall located on South Quad, between Dillon and Fisher Halls. Signature Event Annual campus-wide event put on by residence halls. Each hall has at least one signature event. SMART Goals: Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Realistic, Time-Bound These are the goals you will set for your performance every year, and on which your performance reviews are partially based. Heather will work with you to determine appropriate SMART Goals. South Quad Home to Alumni Hall, Badin Hall, , Fisher Hall, Howard Hall, Lyons Hall, Morrissey Manor, and Pangborn Hall. SSRN: Social Science Research Network Stepan Center The geodesic dome located near East Gate. Stonehenge: The War Memorial Fountain Located at the foot of North Quad, near Cavanaugh Hall and Lafun. SYR: Set Up Your Roommate A hall’s semi-formal dance (sometimes a themed dance) typically held in the fall semester. Touchdown Jesus Nickname for the mosaic on the side of the Hesburgh Library. TravelND: see also Concur Online system through which faculty and staff submit receipts for reimbursement. For rectors, this is used primarily for reimbursement after travel to a conference or other professional development activity. Ultratime The online system in which student employees record their hours, and rectors approve them. Hall clerks, mail clerks, and hall custodians typically use this system. Welsh Fam: Welsh Family Hall A residence hall located on West Quad (behind South Dining Hall, near the bookstore and the Morris Inn), not to be confused with Walsh Hall. Their mascot is the Whirlwinds. West Quad Located behind South Quad near the bookstore, it is home to Ryan, Welsh Family, Keough, O’Neill, McGlinn, and Duncan Halls.
