Theory of the Beautiful Game: the Unification of European Football
Scottish Journal of Political Economy, Vol. 54, No. 3, July 2007 r 2007 The Author Journal compilation r 2007 Scottish Economic Society. Published by Blackwell Publishing Ltd, 9600 Garsington Road, Oxford, OX4 2DQ, UK and 350 Main St, Malden, MA, 02148, USA THEORY OF THE BEAUTIFUL GAME: THE UNIFICATION OF EUROPEAN FOOTBALL John Vroomann Abstract European football is in a spiral of intra-league and inter-league polarization of talent and wealth. The invariance proposition is revisited with adaptations for win- maximizing sportsman owners facing an uncertain Champions League prize. Sportsman and champion effects have driven European football clubs to the edge of insolvency and polarized competition throughout Europe. Revenue revolutions and financial crises of the Big Five leagues are examined and estimates of competitive balance are compared. The European Super League completes the open-market solution after Bosman. A 30-team Super League is proposed based on the National Football League. In football everything is complicated by the presence of the opposite team. FSartre I Introduction The beauty of the world’s game of football lies in the dynamic balance of symbiotic competition. Since the English Premier League (EPL) broke away from the Football League in 1992, the EPL has effectively lost its competitive balance. The rebellion of the EPL coincided with a deeper media revolution as digital and pay-per-view technologies were delivered by satellite platform into the commercial television vacuum created by public television monopolies throughout Europe. EPL broadcast revenues have exploded 40-fold from h22 million in 1992 to h862 million in 2005 (33% CAGR). -

Leigh Rugby Club Was Formed in 1878 and Has Been the Heartbeat of the Community Ever Since
Leigh Rugby Club was formed in 1878 and has been the heartbeat of the community ever since. One of the few towns in England where Rugby League is the dominant sport, Leigh’s own history is intrinsically linked with the fortunes of its rugby league club. Indeed, our town’s crest features a Latin motto which means ‘Progress with Unity’ something we always strive to instil. If you visit Leigh on a Sunday morning you will witness hundreds of children playing the game of rugby league. At our community clubs like Leigh Miners Rangers and Leigh East you will find entire families committed encouraging the disciplines and togetherness of our sport. It is a story reflected in Leigh’s own history where generations of the same family have pulled on the hooped shirt with pride. Both Leigh East and Leigh Miners play a kick away from Leigh Sports Village, a facility which has regenerated the town since it opened more than 10 years ago. More than just a stadium, this is a complex which has welcomed Champions League winners Bayern Munich and Rugby League World Champions Australia for training. Next year, the stadium will host several matches in the Rugby League World Cup and will also be a host venue for the Women’s European Football Championships. Manchester United Women have played their games at the stadium since their formation and global TV coverage means the name of the Leigh Sports Village is now a familiar one with sports fans across the world. It is a stadium which ‘Leythers’ are happy to call home and the atmosphere on match days can take your breath away. -

Rugby League as a Televised Product in the United States of America By Mike Morris Abstract Rugby league is a form of rugby that is more similar to American football than its more globally popular cousin rugby union. This similarity to the United States of America’s most popular sport, that country’s appetite for sport, and its previous acceptance of foreign sports products makes rugby league an attractive product for American media outlets to present and promote. Rugby league’s history as a working-class sport in England and Australia will appeal to American consumers hungry for grit and authenticity from their favorite athletes and teams. -

Our shared aspiration is to create a compelling beacon for civic pride: that excites, enthuses and serves the community and in so doing, generates sporting ambition and inspiration. The Stadium will be efficient, safe, robust, and attractive. Its final objective is to enhance player’s and teams’ performance by providing knowledge which has meaning within the specific context of competition or training. In order to increase the success probability, performance analysis provides the coach and player with information about past performances and may be useful also in generating data for predictive model development.
