Do you have any interesting recipes ... Would you like to share them???

In 1978 a "Village Cook Book" was produced and sold with proceeds going to St. Giles' Parish Church. I think that the time is now right to create a new and updated Cook Book to include villagers' contributions within the Wiverton Group.

Anyone who has any favourite creations, recipes or ideas they would be willing to share and be happy to have published please email me at [email protected] or drop in or post to: 30 Hall Drive, Cropwell Bishop, Nottingham. NG12 3DT (Any pictures of your creations would also be welcome!!)

Did you know Cropwell Bishop once had 5 pubs Anne Terzza, on behalf of the Heritage Group, explains the history behind our Village Life from years ago. Gary Jowett At one time there were 5 Pubs in Cropwell Bishop, the Wheatsheaf, the INNS Chequers Inn, the Canal Inn, the Plough and Harrow and the Lime Kiln. High Class Family Butcher The Parish records do not mention any of these Inns by name until the beginning of Nottingham Road, Cropwell Bishop the 19th century when the Manor Courts gave way to the Parish meetings and meetings Tel: 0115 989 2244 of Ratepayers, as the place of meeting is usually given. For example documents were headed “A meeting of Ratepayers was held at the Canal Inn the house of Vincent Parker”. The Parish meetings undoubtedly brought a little extra business for the TOP QUALITY MEAT Licensees and so they were held at different Inns in turn. Ale houses or Beer houses had existed from time immemorial and we may assume FROM NOTTINGHAMSHIRE FARMS Cropwell Bishop had its share. In the early days each village Court Leet appointed an Officer sworn to watch the quality of bread and ale sold in the village. Evolution of the village Ale house to village Inn began about 1540. For the convenience of visitors on OPENING HOURS Ecclesiastical business Inns were often situated near the Church and every Ale house and Inn had to be licensed after 1643. Tuesday, Thursday & Friday: It would seem from scanty evidence that the Wheatsheaf and Chequers are the oldest 8:30am-5:00pm of the Cropwell Inns probably built on the site of earlier ones. The Plough and Harrow Wednesday & Saturday: was more of a retail shop although it did have a public bar. The Canal Inn originally a farmhouse was licensed for the sale of liquor to serve the needs of the canal and 8:30am-1:00pm wharf. Finally the farmhouse built by Richard Smith in 1840 was licensed as a public house the Lime Kiln shortly afterwards. There were Maltsters with their kilns supplying the needs of the village Inns making their “home brew” up until the early years of the last century when big brewing business entered 4 Muddy Paws the field, but by now the fashion of drinking tea and coffee had become commonplace.
