Tove Jansson's Character Studies for the Moomin
INTRODUCTION by Tom Devlin, Creative Director at Drawn & Quarterly In 2011, I went to Helsinki and was lucky enough to tour Tove Jansson’s studio. She lived in the same large studio for fifty-seven years. It was easy to picture Tove there. I saw the table she used to write at; I saw the wood-burning stove she used to heat her house during the long winters; I saw the shelves and shelves of books—many her own, or her favorites by other authors, and even the hand-lettered scrapbooks her mother, Signe, made where she stored the strips she clipped from the newspaper. I saw the tiny alcove with the even tinier bed she had slept in for years. It was surprising how modest the whole place was. As far as I knew she was Finland’s greatest literary celebrity, and yet she had lived such a simple life. Of course, I should have known this before I stepped over the threshold. It’s in her books. It’s visually manifest in her comics. The Moomins them- selves live modest lives. They have many adventures but home is simple and comforting and there is nothing unnecessary. Rereading these comics just before preparing this book, it struck me just how much of Tove we get in these stories. The Moomin stories (whether in chapter book, picture book, or comic form) all have a similar quality—a quality that is rare in today’s world. There’s a distinctly carefree, individualist vibe mixed with a hint of playful cynicism, a kind of embrace-life-and-live-it-to-its- fullest-but-maybe-don’t-get-too-carried-away ethos. -

Fiona Clark Michael Lett 312 Karangahape Road Cnr K Rd & East St PO Box 68287 Newton Auckland 1145 New Zealand P+ 64 9 309 7848 [email protected] www.michaellett.com Fiona Clark Born in 1954, Inglewood, Taranaki, New Zealand Lives and works in Tikorangi, Taranaki, New Zealand Fiona Clark was born in Inglewood, Taranaki, in 1959, a rural background which formed the basis for her hands-on approach and direct attitude towards artistic practice, attributes which have aided her in the production of an expansive body of photographic work. While studying at the Elam School of Fine Arts between 1972-5, Clark began to develop a performance-based practice, before moving into photography in her final year. Performativity and the politics of identity would prove to be concepts which informed Clark’s later work, and these interests indirectly led her to document Auckland’s drag and transsexual community. These works provided the methodology for much of Clark’s later practice, especially in their emphasis on a collaborative approach and a sense of responsibility towards the images’ subjects, as seen in the then-controversial Dance Party series, which was subjected to censorship after being included in the Auckland Art Gallery’s 1977 group show The Active Eye. After returning to Taranaki, Clark embarked on a number of artistic projects encompassing a wide variety of subject matter: Maori fishing rights, body building, HIV-Aids and lesbian cultural histories. Recently, the shows Go Girl (2002-6) and For Fantastic Carmen (2016) represent a continuation of the documentary project which began with the Dance Party series, and which now spans four decades. -

Perhaps best known from the iconic 1966 film starring Shirley McLaine, Sweet Charity is a feel-good dance musical in the best sense. I love Jackie Clarke’s work and have been looking for something to showcase her talents for some time. The New Zealand Post Season of Sweet Charity is the perfect vehicle for her great voice, her playfulness, her mimicry, her extraordinary understanding of musical styles and her irrepressible energy. I’m also privileged to work with two of New Zealand’s finest and most committed artists, choreographer Shona McCullagh, and musical director/arranger (and composer in his own right), John Gibson. -

Highlights We committed production funding to nine new feature films (including two documentaries) and also supported the completion of seven low-budget independent digital features. We provided strategic, logistic and financial support in the form of prints and advertising grants for six new NZFC-financed features released in New Zealand cinemas during the year. NZFC-financed shorts achieved success at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2011. Blue won the Cannes Critics’ Week prize for Best Short and Meathead was one of nine films selected for the Main Competition. The 61st Berlin International Film Festival awarded the Crystal Bear to short film Manurewa. Written and directed by Sam Peacocke, the film screened in the Generation 14plus Youth Section of the competition. Boy continued its success in New Zealand cinemas during 2010/11, finally completing its theatrical run with a record-breaking NZ box office total of $9.3M. -

In particular we are proud to offer an excellent collection of New Zealand photography from a private collector together with many other interesting consignments. Since returning to the office in May we have completed two auctions that had been on hold since April. Both of these events were remarkably successful and we would like to warmly thank our vendors who remained patient during the lockdown and all those who supported us at the viewings and attended the auctions, whether on-line at home or in person. It is extremely heartening to see that even in the most tumultuous of times, there is still a desire for art in our lives. During the recent lockdown period, like many I agreed with the slogans that suggested we should send 2020 back to where it came from. If only we could rewind and start again! The effect on businesses and families, the many disappointments of cancelled events and travel, will be felt for some time to come. -
