Can Eire 09 make it two in a row?

The Eire Og club is the only West Tipperary club since the formation of the division to win a County Senior Hurling title, when in 1943 they defeated Moykarkeyl Borris.

In 1944 they won their 4th consecutive West Senior title. In 1961 they combined with Cappa white and under the name St. Vin cents they again won the West Senior title. In 1962. Eire 09 won two divisional finals No. 1 Junior Hurling and in Junior Football, Two years later they won divisional Senior Hurling and Junior Football titles. In 1966, they won the No.2 Junior Hurling title. In 1967, they won their 6th Senior Hurling title.

In 1973 they won the No.2 Junior Hurling title, and in 1974 they won the West and County Junior Football titles. In 1976, they again won the Junior Hurling title. but lost the County title after a replay. However in 1977 they went a step further and captured two Junior Hurling titles. In 1980, they won the Crosco Cup for Senior Hurling. Combined with Cappa white, they won the County ul21 title in 1977 and West Minor titles in 78 and 77.

Today they seek their 2nd successive West title and their 8th in all. GLEESON CONCRETE DONOHILL :: TIPPERARY

Lattin/ Emly who have already captured the West Minor Football final are hoping to make it a double, they defeated a fanciedCashel team ;n the semi-final.

In fadeys final we have three members of Tipperary's M unster Min or Champion Te am, John Kennedy of Clon oulty captained the side from mid· field while Eml y's Mike Cunningham and Mike Corcoran plqved at centre forward and right-half back. The latter pair ar e min ors again next year We wish them the best of luck in the A ll Ireland Final.

Many of the Clonoulty team play their hurling with the All Ireland Colleges Senior B Hurling winners, Cashel C.B.S. Many of the Emly/ Lattin lads play for Presentation De la Salle in Hospital and for Tipperary CBS Three of the present Emly/ Lattin team, Mike Cunningham, Mike Corcoran & Seanie O'Brien have played Minor Football for Tipperary.

Both teams have plenty of flair and ability and we look forward to a clean and sporting game. We hope that the winners will go on to win a second successive county title for the west.

SEAN TREACYS Contrary to what many fans might think the above club has existed for many years, only it was affiliated in the north division, generally known under the name Ki/common/ Rearcross. As Kilcommon and Hollyford are sister parishes and as both ends were operating in different divisions it was felt that something should be done about it.

Way back in 1961 a meeting was held in Rearcross to which interested parties were invited. The fusion of the clubs took place and Sean Treacys were born. Each entity, Ki/common Rearcross and Holyford was reasponslble for its own training, transport. raising offunds and this state of affairs existed right up to a couple alyears 8g0 when it was decided to make Ki/common the clubs headquarters.

They were not long in west division hurling when they made their presence felt by capturing the No.2 Junior Hurling Championship. The title they again won in '6 3. Their greatest breakthrough came in '66 when they won the No. 1 Junior Title. Early in '67 they took their one and only Co. title to date beating Kiladangan in the final. Following this victory they joined the Senior ranks and in '67 they were defeated by Eire Og in the Semi-Final.

In 1968 they duly avenged that defeat to take their Senior Hurling title. In 1969 they won their third No.2 Junior title and they also took the u/ 21 crown that year.

In 1973 and 74 they took two Senior Hurling titles at the expense of Eire Og and Golden respectively.

1977 was the start of a great run when they contested 4 successive finals winning three in 77, 78, 79 against Kickhams and Cappa white (twice) before losing the '80 final to Cashel. Can they repeat 73 to-day? When in Emly call to DONIE O'CONNELL'S BAR in the Main Street I I •

The final was played in Cashel on a wet miserable day with Sean Treacys winning on the score 1 -8 toO -8. To jog your memory of that memorable final here are some snippets from the match report by the late Bill O'Donnell. " .... There were times all through Sunday morning when it appeared as if the game would have to be called off. The senior hurling final in my view was one of the best games seen in West Tipperary for some time. All through the hour the tackling was keen and tough interspersed with many patches of real good hurling. Defences were on top at both ends of the field and it resolved itself mto a question of the side taking its chances coming out on top. Scoring from play was low with the winners hitting a goal andtwopointsover60 minutes. John Carey hit the goal around the middle of the first half. A minute or so later he ranged far afield to pick up and drive across a point. Those were the only occasions in the hour when John got his name among the scorers, a tribute to the hurling of John Hogan and later Seamus Hanly who had the job of looking after him. Dinny Ryan had opened the scoring with a driving point very early on but seldom afterwards could he deal with the brainy and determined hurling of T. J. Ryan. THE LOSERS It is no exaggeration to say that theyhad a fair slice of the game in the opening half and had almost 8 monopoly of same for the second period. And yet with all that they scored a bare two points from play in the 60 minutes endevour.ldoubt if I am the only one at a loss for an answer as to what happened. In their last three games of the championship, one of them againstlast Sundays opponents, the Eire Og forwards had scored the massive total of 18 goals and 37 poines. Their highest was against Sean Treacys. In my book, bidding closely for the number one spot with Tom O'Dwyer of the thirty players on view I would put D. J. Gleeson whose striking and covering bore the hallmark of class ... " QUIRI(ES HOllYFORD VillAGE
