  • 1.7 Param Vir Chakra : Our Heroes
1.7 Param Vir Chakra : Our Heroes You may have heard about legendary heroes of the past and their extraordinary acts of bravery. But even today many brave soldiers of our country sacrifice their own lives for our safety. Their brave deeds are honoured by bestowing military decorations on them. Param Vir Chakra is India’s highest military decoration. It is awarded for the most conspicuous bravery or some daring or pre-eminent act of valour or self-sacrifice, in the presence of the enemy, whether on land, at sea or in the air. The Param Vir Chakra is a very rare honour. So far, it has been awarded only 21 times. Fourteen of these awards were given posthumously. The medal itself is very simple in appearance. It is made of bronze, and is fi tted with swivel mounting and has a plain purple ribbon. On the obverse, it has the Indian national emblem at the centre, surrounded by four replicas of ‘Indra’s Vajra’. On the reverse, the words Param Vir Chakra are engraved in Hindi and English, with two lotus flowers in between. The Param Vir Chakra medal was designed by Savitribai Khanolkar. She was a European lady, who married Vikram Khanolkar, an Indian Army Officer. Savitribai loved India and took Indian citizenship. She spoke Marathi, Sanskrit, Hindi fluently and had studied Indian arts and traditions in depth. Indra’s vajra or thunderbolt is supposed to be a matchless weapon. But what makes the weapon invincible is the supreme sacrifice of the sage Dadhichi. According to legend, thousands of years ago, a demon had stolen all the water in the world.

  • Transformation of India's Infantry
Transformation of India’s Infantry Dhruv C Katoch Follow Me – I am the Infantry. Transformation of the infantry is already underway. The pace perhaps is not as fast as some would like but the focus and commitment to transformation remains an imperative for the army’s leadership. Today’s operational environment requires that we remain receptive to change to exploit the phenomenal advances that have been made on the technological front. But even though change is inevitable, it would have to be accomplished by keeping unchanged the basic tenets and ethos of the infantry. Two aspects differentiate the infantry from the rest of the army. Firstly, for the infantry, the soldier is the weapon. Secondly, it is the infantry and infantry alone that fights the close quarter battle, captures and holds ground and fights to the last man and the last round. The infantryman’s fight is always close and personal. His skill, courage, ingenuity, daring and guts, thus, constitute the infantry’s core strength and raison d’être. These attributes are constants and do not change with time. The moral and ethical soul of the infantry and the soldiers who personify it are reflected in the infantry’s commitment to victory. This commitment leads to heroic actions in war as shown by Major Shaitan Singh and his men in fighting to the very end in Rezang La or the valiant defence put up by Subedar Joginder Singh and his platoon on a ridge on Tongpeng La on the Bum La Axis in the Tawang sector. The ethos of the infantry demands of the infantryman that he put his mission ahead of all else.

MINISTRY OF DEFENCE GOVERNMENT OF INDIA Param Vir Chakra Awardee of India Subedar Joginder Singh Subedar Joginder Singh Param Vir Chakra (Posthumous), Sikh Regiment Subedar Joginder Singh IJC-4547), son of Shri Sher Singh, was born on September 26, 1921, in village Mahla Kalan, Moga, Faridkot, Punjab. He was enrolled in I Sikh on September 28, 1936. During the Sino-Indian Conflict 1962, Subedar Joginder Singh commanded a platoon in Tawang Sector of NEFA. While holding a Sikh Regiment defensive position on a ridge in Tongpeng La area on Bum La axis, the platoon noticed heavy enemy concentration opposite Bum La across the McMahon line on October 20. This was indeed preparatory to the Chinese advance on Bum La axis. At 0530 hours on October 23, the Chinese launched a heavy attack on the Bum La axis. The intention was to achieve a breakthrough to Tawang. They attacked the Ridge in three waves, each about 200 strong. The attack was supported by artillery and mortar fire, besides other weapons. The fierce resistance ofthe Sikh platoon compelled the attackers to fall back with heavy losses butthey regrouped quickly to launch a fresh attack under the cover of an artillery barrage. September 26, 1921· October 23, 1962 However, Subedar Joginder Singh and his platoon stood firm like a rock before the advancing enemy. In this fierce action the platoon lost halfofits men but not the will to fight. Subedar Joginder Singh, despite a wound in the thigh, refused evacuation. His platoon also refused to yield anyground to the enemy. The last wave of the Chinese attack, which was more determined and more forceful followed next.
