FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 6, 2013 CONTACT: Mayor’s Press Office 312.744.3334 [email protected] CHICAGO TO SHOWCASE ITS TALENT AT SOUTH BY SOUTHWEST MULTI-MEDIA CONFERENCE Mayor Sends Chicago Organizations to Promote Local Talent at Annual South by Southwest Multi- Media Conference in Austin, Texas Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Choose Chicago, the official tourism organization for Chicago, in conjunction with the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE), World Business Chicago (WBC), and the Illinois Office of Tourism will promote Chicago’s technology, music, and film industries at South By Southwest (SXSW) for the first time March 9 – 12. The group will collaborate on Chicago Made; an initiative designed to educate SXSW attendees about Chicago natives who have made an indelible mark on their respective industries while living and working in Chicago. “From music to movies to the latest tech companies, Chicago is home to the best and brightest in the industry,” said Mayor Emanuel. “Chicago Made will bring local artists and influencers from across the city to South by Southwest to showcase our city’s creative, home-grown talent.” Chicago Made events will include an exhibit booth at the SXSW trade show, a private reception for business leaders, and an official SXSW Chicago music showcase. The effort aims to increase awareness for Chicago as a business and tourism destination and showcase the city’s technology and cultural industries. “This is not your typical trade show booth,” said Melissa Cherry, Choose Chicago Vice President of Cultural Tourism & Neighborhoods. “The entire concept is Chicago Made and we’re going to put Chicago out there in a big way, since this is our first time at SXSW.” The Chicago Made exhibit booth will offer meet-and-greet opportunities with “Chicago Makers” — a “who’s who” from Chicago’s technology, music and film industries, along with performances by a variety of Chicago’s rising and established musical acts.

  • SST Defies Industry, Defines New Music
Page 1 The San Diego Union-Tribune October 1, 1995 Sunday SST Defies Industry, Defines New Music By Daniel de Vise KNIGHT-RIDDER NEWSPAPERS DATELINE: LOS ALAMITOS, CALIF. Ten years ago, when SST Records spun at the creative center of rock music, founder Greg Ginn was living with six other people in a one-room rehearsal studio. SST music was whipping like a sonic cyclone through every college campus in the country. SST bands criss-crossed the nation, luring young people away from arenas and corporate rock like no other force since the dawn of punk. But Greg Ginn had no shower and no car. He lived on a few thousand dollars a year, and relied on public transportation. "The reality is not only different, it's extremely, shockingly different than what people imagine," Ginn said. "We basically had one place where we rehearsed and lived and worked." SST, based in the Los Angeles suburb of Los Alamitos, is the quintessential in- dependent record label. For 17 years it has existed squarely outside the corporate rock industry, releasing music and spoken-word performances by artists who are not much interested in making money. When an SST band grows restless for earnings or for broader success, it simply leaves the label. Founded in 1978 in Hermosa Beach, Calif., SST Records has arguably produced more great rock bands than any other label of its era. Black Flag, fast, loud and socially aware, was probably the world's first hardcore punk band. Sonic Youth, a blend of white noise and pop, is a contender for best alternative-rock band ever.

Brink and Reidell, known by their DJ names ABX and STV SLV, have been releasing free mash-up songs and mixes on their website since 2007. What began as an internet project has transformed overtime to incorporate live DJ sets and a studio album of original tracks. Before taking the stage at the San Francisco venue The Independent on August 17, Reidell briefly explained the history of how The Hood Internet came to be. “ABX and I had a history of experimenting with looped-based software, just kind of making fun beats out of songs for our friends to rap on. The internet at the time seemed to be really receptive to mashups and I think we wanted to approach them with a little different twist.” In order to set themselves apart from other mash-up peers like Girl Talk (http://illegal-art.net/girltalk/), The Hood Internet decided to curate music by fusing rap and hip-hop with indie and electronic music. These songs were not necessarily chosen for their mainstream popularity, but were tracks chosen from Brink and Reidell’s own personal library of music.

Our first Boston show was with DYS, The Mighty COs and The AMERICA’S HARDCORE FU’s. It was very intense for us. We were so intimidated. Future generations will fuck up again THE OUTPATIENTS got started in 1982 by Deep Wound bassist Scott Helland At least we can try and change the one we’re in and his older brother Eric “Vis” Helland, guitarist/vocalist of Mace — a 1980-82 — Deep Wound, “Deep Wound” Metal group that played like Motörhead but dug Black Flag (a rare blend back then). The Outpatients opened for bands like EAST COAST Black Flag, Hüsker Dü and SSD. Flipside called ’em “one of the most brutalizing live bands In 1980, over-with small cities and run-down mill towns across the Northeast from the period.” 1983’s gnarly Basement Tape teemed with bored kids with nothing to do. Punk of any kind earned a cultural demo included credits that read: “Play loud in death sentence in the land of stiff upper-lipped Yanks.
