Message from the President As the president of , one of the oldest and leading in , let me extend to you a warm welcome. was founded in the international city of Kobe in 1902. Since the inception 110 years ago, Kobe University has been vigorously pursuing academic endeavor in the exploration and practice of novel theories under the spirit of integrity, freedom, and cooperation.

We have always been committed to the creation of knowledge, scientific research and technology in a broad range of fields from humanities and human sciences, social sciences, natural sciences to bio-medical sciences. Fostering future leaders who possess rich understanding and communication skills has also been one of our goals.

In the course of our quest for academic excellence, many of our research areas have gained considerable recognition worldwide as the “core research FUKUDA Hideki areas” of Kobe University, and the number is increasing on an ongoing basis. President, Kobe University Most of them are also on the path of becoming a “center of excellence”. In April 2011, we established an Integrated Research Center on Port Island next to the K computer, the high performance computer with exceptional computational ability. The Center, currently housing 10 projects, is expected to develop innovative flagship research and the fostering of human resources with entrepreneurial minds through industry-university-government collaboration. With an increasing number of researchers gathering here from around the world, Kobe University is placing a focus on ways to strengthen ties with international partners for a common value. The two overseas offices, located in the heart of China (Beijing) and the EU (Brussels), play a major role in facilitating such global partnerships.

In regards to education, students are given ample opportunities to obtain advanced expertise and a wealth of knowledge through the ever progressing distinctive education programs. Among the 16,558 students pursuing their studies here, there are 1,132 international students from 77 countries and regions. Many of the alumni, both Japanese and International, are active in a vast array of fields within and outside of Japan.

I extend an invitation to all students, researchers, public and private sectors, as well as to all persons and organizations interested in studying at or collaborating with Kobe University.

Sincerely,

In November 2006, the University established the Kobe University Vision 2015. The Vision represents Kobe University’s commitment to achieve Global Excellence in research, education, its contribution to society, and university management system by the year 2015.

Since then, the Offi ce has aspiring women researchers the momentum they need to pursue actively supported female researcher appointments by promoting a career in their fi eld of research. In the years to come, I sincerely Positive Action programs with an aim to “increase the number of hope that more female researchers will be playing important roles female faculty employed to 30%.” at Kobe University in furthering its recognition as a fi rst-class academic and research institution in the world. The promotion of female scientists in Japan has been nationally advocated under a government initiative since 2006. International societies have also been encouraging female scientists by publicly recognizing their achievements and presenting them with such award as the L’Oréal-UNESCO Award for Women in Science. Among the awards given last year was the Distinguished Women in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Award given to 23 women from around the world by the International Union of Pure Dr. SOUMA received her B.Sc. from Kobe and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC). Ever since graduation, I have visited Kobe University on several occasions. I was given the privilege to speak to the audience during the Home Coming Day ceremony in 2007, by then I had just written Ms. Nezammafi graduated from the Graduate School of Science and one story which almost no one knew of. Since the late 90’s, networks have been extensively studied in various fi elds of natural science and social science, such as ecology, epidemiology, sociology, and etc. Recently, economists also started to investigate various economic phenomena from the point of view of network theory. For instance, central bank economists examine the topology of interbank markets and then try to construct an early warning system that alerts us to the risk of fi nancial turmoil. I currently explore a model of fi nancial systems that could enable us to quantitatively examine how big is “too big to fail”. This line of research is quite important because we should avoid further use of government spending to rescue “big” fi nancial institutions. Our future needs economics.

Biosignal Research Center The Biosignal Research Center was founded in June 1990 as project-oriented research laboratories in the University focusing on the mechanisms of intracellular signal transduction. The Center expanded gradually, and was reorganized as a new research center in April 2000, with thirteen faculty members and two visiting professors. It conducts research on the signaling network for the control of cellular functions (proliferation, differentiation, motility, death, etc.) in response to various stimuli, nutrient starvation, and genotoxic stresses, which involves post-translational modifi cations (phosphorylation, ubiquitination, etc.), degradation, and cleavage of proteins. http://www.biosig.kobe-u.ac.jp/english/index.html

Research Center for Inland Seas The Center, founded in 1963 and reorganized in 1995 and 2003, is located at the eastern end of the Seto Inland Sea, facing Bay. Our mission is to understand the origin of the characteristic environment found in inland seas, to elucidate the mechanisms of their functions, to investigate the diversity and behavior of all marine organisms living there, and to contribute to the preservation of these environments for them. The Center has “Marine Site” at Iwaya in north Awaji Island, provided with dormitory for about 30 students, and the research boat “Onokoro”.

Research Center for Urban Safety and Security The Research Center for Urban Safety and Security (RCUSS) was established on May 11, 1996, about one year after the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake. The mission of RCUSS is to make contributions in building safe and secure urban society by developing visions toward such society and by conducting researches and education on suitable methodologies and frameworks in realizing such society. The RCUSS was re-organized on April 1, 2012 to promote interdisciplinary researches on the disaster prevention and mitigation and has 7 research fi elds in 3 divisions: Risk Assessment, Risk Management and Risk Communication; and 6 research fi elds in 3 cooperative divisions.

Molecular Photoscience Research Center The Center aims at developing state-of-the-art laser spectroscopy and its application to molecular science. Three major projects are currently in progress. (1) Optical control and time-resolved study of molecular excited state and chemical reaction dynamics by coherence of laser light. Doppler-free high-resolution laser spectroscopy to investigate structures and dynamics of excited molecules. (2) Ultashort-pulsed laser spectroscopy to investigate molecular dynamics of chemical reactions and relaxation phenomena in condensed phases. (3) Coherent laser spectroscopy to investigate spin dynamics, atomic and molecular interactions, and magnetic properties of solid states.
