The Thais love to have fun and enjoy celebrating special occasions. Traditional Thai festivals reflect Thai culture and way of life, and many are marked permanently on the tourist calendar for visitors to experience the wonders of Thainess; such as, Songkran, Phi Ta Khon, Candle, and Loi Krathong festivals.

Songkran Festival is the traditional Thai New Year celebrated from 13 to 15April. This festival is the time for family members to get together, make merit at the temple, bathe the Buddha images, and pour water over the hands of the elders when asking them for their blessings. The Songkran Festival would not be complete without the world-famous water-throwing sessions.

80 20 Things to do in Thailand Phi Ta Khon Festival is a part of a grand merit-making event that takes place over 3 days. The most interesting part of this festival is the Phi Ta Khon procession, a re-enactment of the tale of Phra Wetsandon believed to be the last incarnation before the last re-birth of Lord Buddha. The participants of the Phi Ta Khon wear ghost masks made of colourful bamboo sticky rice steamers, and dress in costumes made of many pieces of fabric sewn together.

Ubon Ratchathani province, located in the northeastern region, hosts the Candle Festival to mark the beginning of Buddhist Lent. The Candle Festival features a procession of ornately-carved candles in various sizes and shapes; such as, Buddha statues and creatures from traditional Thai literature, all accompanied by traditional northeastern dance and music.

On the night of the year’s 12th full moon (usually in November), the waterways around the whole country are ablaze with colours and shimmering spectacles as Thai people celebrate Loi Krathong Festival. People launch krathongs, floats made out of banana leaves and adorned with flowers, candles, and incense sticks, onto lakes, ponds, canals, or rivers, to pay tribute to the water goddess. It is believed that the krathongs carry their wishes for happiness and prosperity along with the flow of the water as well as taking away misery.
