BY E.E. BRADMAN IT’S 12:30 ON A WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON, AND I’M TALKING TO BRYAN BELLER, who’s on his way to the helicopter that will take him to tonight’s sold-out Dethklok show. Klokateers, the band’s hooded helpers, will be at the door to pass out Dethklok tattoos, and bartenders will serve drinks with specially made cocktail napkins. Eight hours later, the band is scheduled to take the stage, kick ass, and accept the adulation of the thousands of rabid fans who snapped up tickets in time. Beller’s got a million things on his mind—there are albums to mix, sessions to plan, and tours in the balance—but his primary job tonight will be to make William Murderface, the bassist of Dethklok, sound good to a Comic-Con audience full of hardcore metal fans. And as anyone who’s ever seen Adult Swim’s hit cartoon series Metalocalypse knows, that’s a mighty Herculean task. Paul Tingen hen I first met Slash to talk about his solo album,” recalls “W Eric Valentine, “I immediately told him that the only way I wanted to do it was to approach it like a classic rock record: get great musicians, rehearse the songs properly, and record them on tape machines. There’s one particular vintage tape machine that I wanted to use for drums and bass, to get that classic ’60s rock sound, and I then wanted to use a more modern tape machine that can punch in and out for overdubs. My idea was to make it really simple, with a great drum sound and one guitar in one speaker and another guitar in the other speaker, so you can really hear performances. I didn’t want to hear just a wall of guitar sounds, I wanted to be able to hear Slash playing guitar. He seemed really excited about that.” Saul ‘Slash’ Hudson was excited enough to entrust Valentine with the engineering, mixing and production of his first genuine solo album. Featuring three compositions from each band member, the album showcases a uniquely explosive band chemistry, translating each individual’s well-known virtuosity into an aggressive, melodic, and sometimes even cheeky group dynamic…in which anything goes. The band was formed practically by demand after a wildly enthusiastic response to a single performance at The Anaheim Bass Bash during the Winter NAMM show in January. With just one rehearsal the night before the gig, the trio unexpectedly floored the audience – and themselves – with near-telepathic interplay and boundless musical energy, leaving heads shaking in disbelief that it was their very first gig. “The chemistry was so great,” recalls Govan, who was just featured on the cover of Guitar Player , “that when we came offstage we all said to each other, ‘This is working. We should record this.’” Not content simply to rush together a remote recording, each far-flung band member left their homes (outside London; Nashville, TN; southern California) to meet in a Chicago studio and track the record in person, which took just under two weeks. The music became a melting pot of their respective influences, ranging from ’70s fusion (Return To Forever) to prog (King Crimson, UK) to instrumental rock (Vai, Satriani) to groove metal (Rage Against The Machine) to just plain absurdity (Frank Zappa). -
