Club Member Spotlight on... Letitia Moffitt

Q: When and why did you start running? A: I started running three and a half years ago, when I first moved to this area and discovered how flat it is. Well, that’s not the only reason; some of my colleagues from work were running the 2006 Mahomet “Run for the Library” 5K up at Lake of the Woods and invited me along. I finished last out of my group in something like 32 minutes. Right then and there I had one of those fist-shaking-at-the-heavens moments where I vowed I would get in shape. Two years later I ran that same race and finished second in my AG at just about 24 minutes. Those powdered pancakes sure tasted great.

Q: How long have you lived in the area? A: I moved to Champaign in June 2009; before that I lived fifty miles down the road in Charles- ton. Before that, upstate New York. Before that, New York City. Using street descrip- tions, the route was digitized onto the base map data using specialized GIS mapping software. Once the course was in digital form, a key ad- vantage of a GIS mapping system as compared to drawing on paper maps, computing the course length with a car odometer, or using a measuring wheel is that exact distances can be easily calculated, mile marker loca- tions automatically determined (fig. 1), and any changes to the route can be quickly updated. Prior to measur- ing the marathon course route on the ground, we used the GIS mapping system to test a number of scenarios, thus saving considerable time and expense later during the final course Figure 1. By late August, the preliminary marathon course mapping had been finalized, and it was decided to make the first detailed ground measurement of the route. Because the finish line was already known to be the 50-yard hash mark inside Memorial Stadium (fig. 1), the GIS analysis determined the start location as south of the I-Hotel along First Street almost directly across from the SAIC Building, and this was used as the beginning for the ground measurement. The traditional method used to measure long road courses employs a Jones/Riegel Counter device, which is affixed to the front wheel axel of a bicycle (fig. 2). The certification procedure moved the official start location approxi- mately 750 feet north of the start location determined by the ground measurement conducted in August. The difference is probably attribut- able to several factors: the August ground measurement began from the start location, the reverse of the October certification measurement; the manner in which the tangents were cut at the numerous right-angle corners; differences in the actual paths along the 26.2 mile course, etc. The USATF states in their Course Measurement and Certification Procedures manual that among other methods, “aerial survey maps” are not deemed suitable for measuring courses for certification. Our experi- ence over the past two years with measuring and mapping the Illinois Marathon courses is that GIS, GPS, and the JR Counter all provide reliable measurements.
