The Department of Distance Learning strives to provide all participants with high-quality educational opportunities anytime, anywhere, by e-Learning delivery methodologies.

HONORS PROGRAM The MSSU Honors Program encourages academic excellence by providing special opportunities and challenges for exceptional students. Entrance into the program is selective, allowing MSSU to place academically advanced students with Honors-oriented professors in small focused classes. Honors students follow a stricter graduation plan – they are required to maintain a specific GPA, travel abroad, engage with the community through service, and complete certain courses.

INSTITUTE OF INTERNATIONAL STUDIES Missouri Southern has been a leader in developing globally-focused programs and curriculum since 1995. YOURS TO LOSE ADVANCED MEDICAL SCHOOL ACCEPTANCE PROGRAM Missouri Southern has partnered with the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences to develop the Yours to Lose – Advanced Medical School Acceptance Program. Students accepted into the program will be admitted to KCU’s new Joplin campus at the same time they are accepted to Missouri Southern. This exclusive partnership creates a seamless transition into medical school through an accelerated, three-year program.

After receiving their bachelor’s degree in biology, students will then transition to KCU-Joplin to finish their degree without being required to take the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT).

DR. ALAN D. MARBLE

Dr. Marble is the fifth president of Missouri Southern State University. After serving for nearly a full year as Missouri Southern’s interim president, he was named president by the MSSU Board of Governors on June 3, 2014. President Marble is retiring on June 30, 2020.

DR. BRAD HODSON

Dr. Brad Hodson serves as the Executive Vice President of MSSU, having been appointed February 2015. He also serves as the Executive Director of the Missouri Southern Foundation. Dr. Hodson earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Economics and Finance from Missouri Southern State University in 1991. He earned a master’s in Business Administration degree from Pittsburg State University in 1993 and a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2005.

DR. PAULA CARSON

Dr. Paula Carson serves as the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs. She began her appointment in July 2015. She graduated from Loyola University of the South in New Orleans, La., with a bachelor’s in Business Administration in 1987. She received her master’s in Business Administration in 1988 from Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss., and her Ph.D. in Management in 1992 from Louisiana State University.

MR. DARREN FULLERTON

Mr. Darren Fullerton serves as the Vice President for Student Affairs. He joined the University in October 1999. He was appointed Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management in 2010. He previously served as the University’s Director of Student Life. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Missouri Southern State University and a M.Ed. from the University of Arkansas.

MR. ROB YUST

Mr. Robert Yust serves as the Vice President for Business Affairs. He has served in this capacity since September 1, 2007. He holds a C.P.A. certificate and obtained a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a major in Accounting and an Associate of Science in Computer Programming from Missouri Southern State College in 1981.

MR. JARED BRUGGEMAN

Mr. Jared Bruggeman serves as the Director of Athletics. He became the Director of Athletics at MSSU in June 2009. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Natural Science and a Bachelor of Science in Education, with an emphasis in Physics, from the University of North Dakota; and a Master’s of Education in Educational Leadership from the University of North Dakota.

Joplin, located in southern Jasper County and northern Newton County in the southwestern corner of Missouri, is the largest city in Jasper County and has a city population of more than 52,000 people. Joplin enjoys the community lifestyle often associated with a smaller town but also the amenities of a city that serves more than 250,000 people every day with jobs, medical care, education, retail and entertainment. The 400,000 people within a 40-mile radius makes Joplin the state’s 4th largest metropolitan area. It is routinely touted as one of the best and most affordable places in the United States to live, work and raise a family. From commerce and manufacturing, education and culture, healthcare and recreation, to sporting events and transportation, the Joplin region is a 5,000-square-mile growing area in the heart of the U.S with one of the lowest housing costs in the nation.

Medical care is strong in the region with two major regional medical centers based in Joplin and numerous community hospitals serving the nearby cities and towns. With major medical centers, there are treatment options for the majority of medical conditions. There is also a strong network of family physicians. Health care options also include numerous mental health options and physical therapy services. Missouri Southern supports health care training for the region from dental hygiene to respiratory therapy to nursing.

Parks, indoor and outdoor sports, and entertainment characterize the Joplin region’s quality of life. With a temperate four-season climate, there is plenty of opportunity to enjoy the outdoors: From community parks, to walking and biking trails, to floating down one of the many area Ozark streams. But it’s not just about the outdoors. The area is home to an eclectic blend of entertainment venues and festivals in nearly every community that make up the Joplin region. Shoppers and diners delight in the variety of shops and eateries offered throughout the region. Art galleries, museums and concerts add to the year-round quality of living in the area.

Missouri Southern’s next president must be a proven leader and strategic thinker. The President must have clear goals and objectives in mind, and know how to create a culture of productivity and accountability that drives results in a complex environment. He or she must have both financial/organizational acumen and a long-term vision for academic excellence.

The next president will lead with humility while exhibiting the confidence and courage to take MSSU’s fundraising endeavors to the next level. He or she must be decisive with a collaborative personality that can help unite the students, faculty and staff to build an even stronger sense of community within the region and state. This leader will bring infectious energy to the institution and passionately and articulately convey the University’s path to continued and greater success.

This person needs to successfully balance the responsibilities of being a leader on campus and an ambassador to the community. The President is the primary representative for the University when dealing with the local, regional, state, and national leaders and legislators. The President is responsible for the University’s political and lobbyist relations.
