I am thankful for our fans, they were there at every game for us. I really appreciate their support. Dwayne [Harris] was unbelievable tonight. Not just on the returns but in all phases of the special team. Karl [Joseph] had his best game that I have ever seen as a Raider. I really credit Doug [Martin] with his running style. Our kicker continues to make clutch field goals. I thought all three phases contributed. It was a big win. Merry Christmas to everybody.” Q: What are your thoughts on tonight being the last game in the Coliseum? Gruden: “I don’t like it. It’s too sentimental tonight. That’s not the case, it’s for other people to decide. The love affair for the fans here with the Raiders goes way back and when we get this result like we did tonight, it is a Merry Christmas for everybody.” Q: Why was it important for you to go to the black hole after the game? Gruden: “I used to make that happen every game. After every game we won. We didn’t have that many opportunities to do that this year. I think our team played good football tonight and a lot of that is playing because of our fans. We came back against the Chiefs and made it a fourth quarter game and then came back and beat Pittsburgh. I thought we played pretty good tonight.

You go through the offseason and you look for ways to make your football team better. Opening days are always very exciting. Great opportunity to go out and express who we are and what we stand for, what we believe in and how we’re going to play football in 2016. We got an obvious reminder of last year when despite all those intentions, we went out and didn’t really play well to start the year. We collected ourselves and we had a solid year, but clearly we’d like to start 2016 a little better than we did 2015. Anyways, questions?” Q: Sounds like you reminded the players of how you opened last year. Coach Del Rio: “No, not really. I didn’t really focus on it. We’re really all about us and now. It’s just a little talking point for you.” (laughing) Q: Reggie Nelson is a team captain in his first year. What kind of impact has he had on this locker room so far? Coach Del Rio: “I think really if you look at our group there, it’s four guys that are all young. Khalil [Mack] and Derek [Carr] have been playing well, but they’re still really young players. Then Rodney [Hudson], it’s his second year with the team and Reggie’s first year. I think what you’re seeing in our team is that, it’s team vote, the players vote on it.

    Dec. 20, 2017 For Immediate Release Derek Carr Named Ed Block Courage Award Recipient ALAMEDA, Calif. – Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr has been selected as the Raiders 2017 Ed Block Courage Award recipient. The Ed Block Courage Award is presented to the player who exemplifies a commitment to the principles of sportsmanship and courage. Additionally, the award recognizes a player’s efforts on and off the field, as well as their ability to overcome great adversity. The recipient is selected by a vote of his teammates. Carr overcame a broken leg late in the 2016 season to enter 2017 as one of the league’s elite quarterbacks, starting his first career 60 games. In Week 15, he crossed 3,000 yards for the fourth consecutive season to begin his career, just the sixth quarterback in NFL history to do so in each of their first four seasons (Andy Dalton, Peyton Manning, Russell Wilson, Cam Newton and Ryan Tannehill). In 2016, he became the first quarterback in franchise history to throw for 3,000 yards in each of his first three seasons and led seven fourth-quarter comebacks en route to winning the NFL’s Castrol Edge Clutch Performer of the Year award. Carr has enjoyed one of the most prolific starts to a career in NFL history, especially when it comes to finding the end zone. His 53 touchdowns rank second most by any NFL player through his first two seasons, trailing only Dan Marino (68). And although his 2016 season was cut short due to injury, he continued his stellar start to his career by throwing 28 more touchdowns in his third season.
