He’s a one-man bandwagon. In 2017, the 22-year-old De Grasse limbered up with a 10.21-second, fifth-place outing in Doha, Qatar, and he ran fourth in 10.05 at the Prefontaine Classic Diamond League meet in Eugene, Ore., in May. Then he kicked it into gear, winning three races in a row in increasingly thrilling fashion in a 10-day span in June. First, De Grasse won the 200 metres in 20.01 seconds at the Diamond League stop in Rome; then he snapped off a 10.01-second time to win the 100 metres at the Bislett Games in Oslo, Norway, on June 15. Three days later in Stockholm, De Grasse electrified fans at the Bauhaus-Galan Diamond League competition, blazing to a 100-metre victory in 9.69 seconds. That effort was wind-assisted, the tailwind of 4.8 metres per second well above the permissible upper limit of 2.0 metres per second. So, the time cannot stand as an IAAF-sanctioned result. Using a wind calculator, that result translates to a 9.88 time with no wind, or a 9.79 finish, factoring in the maximum allowable tailwind of 2.0 metres per second. Still, the result suggests the Canadian record of 9.84, jointly held by Donovan Bailey (1996 Olympics) and Bruny Surin (1999 IAAF World Championships) could be in jeopardy this season, possibly at the Canadian Track & Field Championships in Ottawa from July 3-9. It also presages tantalizing possibilities for the IAAF World Championships in London from Aug. 5-13, when De Grasse will compete against Jamaica’s Usain Bolt, the world and Olympic record holder in both the 100- and 200-metre sprints. De Grasse’s previous two seasons on the international circuit also have gathered momentum in similarly compelling fashion. In 2015, his final season at the University of Southern California (USC), De Grasse won the sprint double at the NCAA Championships. He repeated that feat at the Pan American Games in Toronto. He capped off an intensely busy 2015 by winning bronze in the 100 metres at the IAAF World Championships in Beijing, where he also helped Canada’s 4x100 metre relay team to a third-place finish. In 2016, his first as a full-time professional, De Grasse won the double (100 and 200) at the Harry Jerome Track Classic and posted Diamond League victories in both the 100 metres (Oslo) and 200 metres (Birmingham, England) in early June of that year. All that was by way of warming up for the featured attraction – winning three sprint medals at the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro, his impressive Olympics debut.
