Germany to take 50 migrants off Frontex vessels

Italy has since Saturday re- quested that its EU peers take some of the migrants stranded aboard the Frontex ships off the Italian coast. A German government spokes- woman said in a statement that “Germany and Italy have agreed that, in view of the ongoing talks on intensifi ed bilateral co-opera- tion on asylum policy, Germany is ready to take in 50 people”. Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte confi rmed the deal yesterday, writing on Face- book that 150 of the 450 migrants had now been accepted and the rest would soon be fairly distrib- uted among other EU countries. “This is the solidarity and responsibility we have always asked from Europe and now, after the results obtained at the last European Council, it is starting to become reality,” Con- te said. “Let’s continue on this path with fi rmness and respect People participate in the ‘Helsinki Calling’ protest in the Finnish capital yesterday. for human rights.” Conte had been in contact with his 27 EU peers, reminding them that they had agreed at their end- of-June summit on the need to share the migration burden. In Spain, the issue of remembrance is especially relevant as its 1936-9 civil war and subsequent 36-year-long dictatorship were largely hushed up for fear of reviving once-bloody divisions. Momoitio says: “There are many youngsters aged 15, 16, 17 who come and say ‘ETA, what is ETA?” she says. “How are we going to talk about something that not even us adults — who went through it, who are older — dare talk about at home, among friends, family?” To remedy this, education is key. But even drawing up a school history module is sensitive in a society where those who sympathised with ETA and those who didn’t both want their voice heard. Many of those who supported ETA justify its emergence in 1959 as a response to years of repression of the Basques which came to a head under Francisco Franco’s dictatorship. They see themselves as being on one side of a wider confl ict. On the other side, ETA is considered a terrorist group that wreaked untold suff ering, killing at least 853 people according to the Spanish government. For Basque historian Gaizka Fernandez Soldevilla, the key lies in making a rigorous, academic assessment of the past. “If you shut up, then you create a void that someone is going to fi ll with propaganda,” he says.
