  • Minister Apologizes to Catholics; Some Question If Politics Behind It
Minister apologizes to Catholics; some question if politics behind it WASHINGTON – After the Rev. John Hagee, a San Antonio televangelist, sent a letter to the head of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights apologizing for any comments he made “that Catholics have found hurtful,” the league’s president, William Donohue, said that “the case is closed.” Other Catholic leaders said the gesture toward reconciliation should be graciously accepted but that there was a ring of partisan political maneuvering to the publicity about Rev. Hagee’s anti-Catholic rhetoric and the apology. The words of the minister, the pastor of the Cornerstone Church in San Antonio, became an issue because of his endorsement of a presidential candidate. Richard R. Gaillardetz, professor of Catholic studies at the University of Toledo in Ohio, said while Rev. Hagee’s May 12 letter “goes beyond the garden variety ‘I’m sorry if someone was offended’ apology,” the way the controversy has played out seems to have political motivations in addition to concern for decrying anti- Catholicism. When presumptive Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain received a highly publicized endorsement by Rev. Hagee, Mr. Donohue blasted the Arizona senator for seeking the support of someone who “has waged an unrelenting war against the Catholic Church.” “For example, he likes calling it ‘the great whore,’ an ‘apostate church,’ the ‘Antichrist,’ and a ‘false cult system,’“ said Mr. Donohue in a Feb. 28 press release. Video of Rev. Hagee using such terms in his televised preaching is available on several Internet sites. Sen. McCain has said he does not agree with Rev.

  • Imposing Non-Legal Duties: Family, Religion, Patriotism and the Roots of Contemporary Conservatism
IMPOSING NON-LEGAL DUTIES: FAMILY, RELIGION, PATRIOTISM AND THE ROOTS OF CONTEMPORARY CONSERVATISM Mark McGarvie, J.D., Ph.D. The College of William and Mary School of Law P.O. Box 8795 Williamsburg United States [email protected] 757-221-1737 Abstract This paper recognizes the legal separation of public and private spheres as characteristic of Americans’ ideas of democracy secured in their constitution. It asserts that political and social presssures emanating from right-wing or conservative movements are diminishing the distinction between public and private spheres in popular opinion. These movements recognize and encourage the existence of non-legal duties arising from family, patriotism, and religion. In asserting a broad-based social recognition of these duties, modern-day conservatives limit the scope of the private sphere and threaten the political autonomy upon which democratic self- government depends. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A huge conceptual gap exists between telling someone what he must do because the law mandates it and telling him what he should do because cultural values expect it. Yet, this distinction is less significant in the lives of most people than it is in academic or legal discourse. I argue here, with only a whisper of hyperbole, that the cultural diminution of this distinction threatens the basis of democracy by undermining individual autonomy and the protection of it in rights as the focus of law. Western law requires duties to be established by legislation or entered into by contract — nobody is compelled to accept another’s worldview or moral sense as determinative of his behavior. Moreover, the cultural imposition of non-legal duties frequently substitutes emotion for rational thought as grounds for imposing obligations.

(2) With the exception of outfits like the League, RC's tend to take abuse lying down. Their reasons for doing so derive from a long and complicated sociology, but it remains the case that little attention is paid to anti-Catholic libels. (3) Much the same can be said about the snide and casual canards leveled at Protestant fundamentalists -- how fashionable it is, e.g., for a President of Yale to attack Falwell and Co. as if they were preparing thumbscrews and racks for non-believers. (4) Nevertheless, anti-Catholic and anti-fundamentalist attacks are offensive not only to the targets but to the principle of religious tolerance which lies at the heart of our institutions. Such prejudice should be treated in the same manner as anti-Semitic and anti-black prejudice. (5) All of which leads up to a proposal to which I'd like your reactions: why not have the President deliver a major address on religious and racial bigotry in the U.S.? He would begin by invoking Jeffers~n and Lincoln on the meaning of the Declaration, thence to a brief history of racial and religious bigotry in the U.S.

  • The Passion of the Christ Six Years On
The Passion of the Christ Six Years On: What Happened? By Don Perlgut (Appeared in Metro Magazine , issue 164, April 2010) http://www.metromagazine.com.au/magazine/pdfs/M164-Contents.pdf Introduction Opening on 25 February 2004, Mel Gibson's film The Passion of the Christ confounded numerous critics and observers by becoming one of the most successful films of all time, particularly in the USA. The film also arrived with enormous controversy about its antisemitic portrayals and excessive violence, and resulted in an extraordinary media storm. Almost six years on, what has happened? Why was the film not as successful in Australia as in the USA? Were fears that the film would encourage a rise in antisemitism justified? Does Hollywood provide more films for the Christian audience who embraced The Passion ? Where has the audience gone? Antisemitism in The Passion of the Christ Suggestions of antisemitism in the film were already well-documented as early as May 2003, with the widely reported Report of the Ad Hoc Scholars Group Reviewing the Script of ‘The Passion’. This group of four Catholic and three Jewish scholars was convened by specialists at the Secretariat for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Anti-Defamation League. 1 They provided a confidential analysis of a shooting script, which was only made public after the film’s release in 2004. In their report, the group unanimously concluded that the script had significant historical errors, the version of the script they read would promote antisemitic sentiments and the script violated many magisterial Catholic documents including several Vatican instructions.

Metadiscourses of impoliteness following “France’s 9/11” in selected print media Milan Ferenčík University of Prešov, Slovakia Abstract Almost immediately after the Charlie Hebdo shootings of 7 January 2015, some print media made room for alternative opinions of what had happened. The articles and the discussions they inspired are replete with evaluations which lend themselves to analysis using methods and procedures of Politeness Theory. The paper examines an example of a metadiscourse of (im)politeness which questions the “moral orders” underlying the cartoonists’ as well as other participants’ social practices vis-à-vis their ideological foundations, esp. freedom of speech as one of the principal liberties of our society. To that end, the approach to politeness as “social practice” is employed which, while insisting on multiple understandings of politeness, places participants’ evaluations at the centre of politeness research. Keywords Charlie Hebdo shooting, impoliteness, metacomment, politeness as discursive struggle, politeness as social practice Introduction aggression which was extensively covered in The quote from my example of a European mainstream mass media and metadiscourse, i.e. a discourse about ultimately invited audiences to take discourse(s), succinctly formulates the positions. The book of Revelation (revealed - unveiling) was written by the beloved disciple John at the instructions of the risen resurrected Jesus in approximately the year 100 AD.. Revelation contains seven letters given from Jesus to the entire Christian Church movement. Letters of instruction and also letters of encouragement. Did you know that all of the Apostles of Jesus died a martyrs death except for the disciple John and that according to early Church tradition the Roman government had likewise tried to kill John by boiling him in oil yet God delivered him and did not allow John to be hurt therefore the Roman government banished John to a small island named "Patmos" and it was there at this prison island of Patmos that the disciple John again saw the resurrected Jesus and wrote the things Jesus instructed John to write giving us "The Revelation of Jesus Christ" the Bibles' last book.
