FROM THE BRIDGE by Commodore Bud Cline (Destined to be PC 47) WATERLINES Official Newsletter of the Grand Traverse Yacht Club I’m going to miss Tom Cowell’s monthly update for two major 13615 S. 2006 was not just a great sailing year but rather than wrapping up a season it has launched the next two. This 2006 was so great that it has launched Nationals 2008! Here some of the highlights. 2006 saw fleet 38 race 4 colligate style races per evening. This kept the fleet tight, the action fast and was a huge hit. Place changes were the norm. We also had on one evening our “Equity Cup” (where skippers are handi- capped in Bermuda start) and on another we had a new “Team” racing night, both of which were immensely popular. New nightly fun was added with the following weekly awards with traveling trophies: First Place Jr. & the award for an event/situation “that you would like to forget.” Loren Newton who exercised his creative juices made the later tro- phy. In truly generous Interlaker fashion, the recipient of this honor always remembered to bring it the following week and was anxious to share the distinction! Details of note just recently declassified: 10 boats in fleet. 8 boats on the line average. (Including Jrs.) -MVP David Phelps. Dave brought new enthusiasm to the fleet. His family is always there. He has brought two additional members into the fleet. He has purchased a second boat which his kids will race. He always has a smile. -Notable QUOTE: “Here Dad, this belongs to you.” From Morgan Young as he handed his Dad the weekly “OOPS” trophy received for an unceremonious docking after Equity Cup. Season Placings: 5th Dick Hirtrieter & George Panks; 4th Loren Newton & Emily Zakem; 3rd Jim Menzies & Bubba Popa; 2nd Jim Milliman & Louis Rodriguez; 1st Bob Sagan & Jason Masseroni. -SIT ON IT (Amongst other “Sagan Special” awards) Dave Phelps received a WOOPIE CUSION for leading the “sitting on Sagan” with gusto during the Team Racing.

New Date for the Great White Northerns is July 22nd and the new docks will be in!

“Outreach” efforts where made to members in Western Michigan in the Ludington Area. Jim Clark is a 30+ year ISCA member living on Hamlin Lake, and there are several Interlakes on nearby Stoney Lake including TK Jones. The “West Coast Championships” were held on Hamlin. Jane Clark received the MVP award for the delightful picnic lunch she provided and QUANTUM SAILS O.D. helped to make the event a success. We will be going back again in 2007. Oh, yeah. Big Interlake Party at HANNA in Feb. Check your e-mail. Bob Sagan, Fl Capt.

!! Immediate Seating Available !! Donations towards the new furniture have been received for about half the project so we are continuing the effort to sign up sponsors for the remaining chairs. Members who participate will have a brass plaque affixed to the back of a chair commemorating their GTYC legacy for all time. To participate just send your check for $105.00 made out to GTYC at PO Box 131 Traverse City MI 49685. PC TC will get in touch about your plaque text.

The initial group of plaques are in the works and we thank the first fleet of sponsors listed below. More are on the way. Add your name now for the second batch of plaques.

Log of the Social Committee:

Anyone left (a)bored on a Friday night has no one to blame but themselves! There have been great times at the club thanks to a lot of superb cooking by accomplished galley masters. How could we forget the S2’s “S” night (soups, salads, and strawberry shortcake!)? Memorable food and a memorable event.

And how about Mardi Gras: Gumbo, Jambalaya, King Cake (who got the baby?), and Hurricanes from the bar. Great party! During the festivities, we were honored by an appearance of the Queen and her consort. What more could you ask?

Then there was wet burrito night put on by Cap’n Bryan and crew. Who knew the light rigging of those pa- per plates would hold so much great food! If you’re not coming down to the club on Friday night Crewsine night, you’re really missing the boat.

So you need a Crewsine forecast to set that course? Try these for great Friday evening anchorages with great food and even better company:

March 2nd Ciao Chow by the VanStratt crew March 9th Only the Good Die Young, Briefly – Dyes, Youngs and Briefs March 16th St. Patty’s Day – come celebrate our common Irish heritage (drinking) and a great meal of Dan S.’s famous corned beef. All four-leaf clovers here. March 23rd Hunter night with the Wyckoff’s taking the helm. March 30th You!

There are still some open dates for our Friday night Crewsine. Grab your crew and make sure Jess signs you up quickly as the spots are sure to go fast. We are still looking for ideas and helpers for April 20’s Pirates Rendezvous. So dig out that costume, bring some treasure to bury, and share the fun.

Roscher’s Christmas Caramels 4 cups half & half 4 cups white sugar 4 cups white Karo syrup 4 sticks real butter (no substitutes) • Pour ingredients into a large heavy pot (I use a 6 quart Caphlon stock pot) • Cook and stir until candy thermometer reaches 250 degrees (takes approx. 1 1/2 hours • Remove from heat—add 1 tablespoon of vanilla—stir until mixed • Pour (1 inch deep) into two buttered 9x9 silicon pans or one large buttered jelly role or sheet cake pan Let cool—cut into squares—wrap in wax paper (I use pre cut hamburger papers form Gordons Food Service)

Tom Cowell’s Crab in Tomato Sauce for Pasta

1 pound flaked blue crab or faux crab (good) 1 cup chicken broth 2 Tbs butter or margarine 1/2 tsp salt 1 Tbs olive oil 1/4 tsp pepper 1 medium onion coursely chopped 4 cups fresh spinach 3 cloves minced garlic at least 2/3 cup Parmesan cheese 2 Tbs flour 1 can ( 16 oz) whole tomatoes, quartered, undrained pasta ... linguine cooked and ready to serve

In a large skillet, combine butter and olive oil ... saute onion and garlic over medium heat for 2 to 3 minutes. Add the flour (sifting works well), stir and cook until flour is well blended. Stir in tomatoes, broth, salt and pepper. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, cover and simmer for 10 minutes. Add crabmeat and cook for a few minutes. Stir in spinach and cook just until the fresh spinace wilts. Toss hot pasta with half of the Par- mesan cheese then serve topped with crab, tomato, and spinach sauce. Pass remaining Parmesan cheese. Thanks to Mike Whea- ton and his dad, Dick Wheaton, for volun- teering to install the new PA system. Mike and PC Tom Cowell routed wires for new speakers in the dining area and bar area. Outside speakers are planned for the deck and Pleasantville when the weather warms up. Mike's expertise took the project from "home brew" to "professional grade" so it sounds really great. We're ready for It's Wednesday Night race results to be heard around the world this summer!

BUILDING & GROUNDS

By Matt Hughey, Committee Chair

Believe it or not spring is almost here and clean up day will be April 28th. I hope we have as good of turn out as we did last year. It was sure wonderful to see all that help and the club looked as good as it gets, thanks to all the volunteers. I think you get the point, we will see you on April 28th and thanks for your wonderful support.

Sincerely, Matt Hughey In the words of Hans and Franz: "We're here to pump you up. Girly men and Ladies) listen up with your girly little boats don't be afraid of the pumpattude. There are no Girly excuses like, oh it’s to cold, no wind, it's raining, too , too rough? To earn the right to be a laser sailor you must fight through the physical and mental pain and not succumb to the girly ways."

Do you know where your Laser is? Send us a digital picture and we will vote on the most uniquely stored la- ser...First award of the season.

We have been busy talking and planning this year’s calendar. The sum- mer racing schedule officially starts Tuesday June 5th; that is only 96 days away. That means Glenn Rauth, Scott Porter and crew, Paul Schneider, Eric Reed, Mark Lyons have a very short time to buy a boat because they are rumored to be on the starting line on June 5. These people have either expressed interest in sailing lasers, or if they haven't, we have decided that they should. There has also been a rumor floating around that John Briggs (JB) will be returning to the fleet this year. The fleet will be watching him closely to learn the techniques of the for- mer pumpkin day champion. Another returning member of the fleet is former fleet captain Dave Gerber. I am sure that he will be out there with family racing his laser when in country. We also have some new comers to the fleet. One of them is a student at the East Junior High School Clark Phelps. If Clark sails as hard as he studies we are all in trouble.

Other activities planned include the annual Bunny Day regatta tentatively scheduled for Saturday May 5th, and a Laser Clinic for all levels of sailing expertise by the nationally recognized coach, Tom Babel. Tom will run some drills, shoot video and provide his expert advice on everything Laser for those in attendance. This event is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday May 29th.

Please contact Than Dykstra ([email protected]) or Jamie Stuursma ([email protected]) with any questions.

The seminar is open to anyone who wants to attend and is free of charge.

In previous years Dave, Tom and Eric Lind have reviewed and explained the rules that are con- tained in THE RACING RULES OF SAILING. They have also concentrated on every- thing from "cold water safety issues" to "how to prepare for a Protest". ISAF Vice President Dave Irish has also spoken at this semi- nar on the history of the Racing Rules.

This year we are asking sailors to contact Dave or Tom and let them know what areas you would like to "brush up" on. You may have a particular rule that you would like to better understand, maybe you have some tactics/strategy ques- tions or possibly a sail trimming question. If you Missed Jim Abfalter’s Friday Night, Here’s a Taste of What You Missed!

EASY FLAN 1. 6 to 10 eggs. I use 8 2. 2 cans evaporated milk 3. 2 cans sweetened condensed milk 4. ½ cup sugar Flavoring (for regular flan use vanilla and a pinch of cinnamon, for orange saffron use a healthy pinch of saffron and the zest and juice from half an orange and a little orange flavored hooch)

If making saffron orange flan, first zest with a fine the orange and then squeeze the juice and strain, reserving zest for later. Add the saffron by rubbing it between your fingers to break it up, to the juice and gently heat over a low flame to almost boiling, then set aside.

Add the ½ cup sugar to a nonstick pan and heat over medium high heat until the sugar com- pletely melts and caramelizes. Don’t let it burn! It’s a close call. Pour the melted sugar into a casserole dish and tilt the pan to distribute the sugar evenly over the bottom. Work quickly on this as the sugar will set up fast. Alternately you can make individual flans using muffin tins or ramekins by putting some of the sugar in each tin.

Beat the eggs until well mixed but not foamy. Add the milk and zest and strain the juice into the milk and eggs and mix well. Pour the mixture into the prepared pan and bake in a water bath at 350 for about 45 minutes. Check it often with a toothpick. The flan will still be very jiggley when it comes out of the oven but will set up as it cools. Chill over night in the refrig- erator. To unmold the flan, run a knife around the edges and turn over onto the serving plate. It will release from the mold after a few seconds. If using muffin tins turn out onto a cookie sheet and use a spatula to place the flans on plates. Garnish with edible flowers or mint.

From Tom Babel Our Hat’s Off to Dan Spyhalski! Congratulations to past commodore Dan Spyhalski. The American Sailing Association named Dan as one of the Top sailing instructors for 2006. Dan was among 30 instructors named to the prestigious list from around the coun- try by this leading certifying organization headquartered in Los Angeles.

What makes the Top Instructor of the Year Award noteworthy is the fact that the selection is based on evaluations submitted by the sailing students them- selves. Standardized, confidential, point-by-point evaluation forms from sailing students are counted by ASA, cross-checked for accuracy and results are calculated for an overall quality score.

Referring to the sailing grounds around the northern Great Lakes as the ‘Spice Route,’ home to some of the best cruising in the world, our Dan is quoted as saying: “It‘s the perfect location to introduce newcomers to the sport due to our changing conditions, protected shoreline and countless interesting anchorages and ports to explore. My satisfaction in teaching sailing comes when my students attain skill levels they never dreamed they could reach and the gratification I gain from their achievements.”

As you all know, Dan teaches sailing at Bay Breeze Yacht Charters.

Congratulations to Bay Breeze Yacht Charters. Our members John Kraft and Jay Kraft have opened up a second sailing base for Bay Breeze Yacht Charters at Duncan Bay Boat Club in Cheboygan, just 16 miles east of the Mackinaw Bridge on northern Lake Huron. This location provides Bay Breeze’s charter clients with quicker access to the Les Cheneaux Islands and to the cruising grounds of the North Channel.

Just ask John or Jay, they would be happy to tell you more about it.

GTYC LASER NEWS JAMIE STURSMA

Greetings Laser Sailing fans!! The summer is rolling and the Laser fleet is off to a rousing start. We have had great weather for the 4 Tuesdays in June and have had some spectacular sailing and close racing. We have had 21 different boats racing during the month of June with a high of 16 on two nights. Come join the fun, there are many levels of skills out sailing as well as many age brackets, from the Dirk Phelps and his small sail to the “experienced” Ned Lockwood still teaching us all some lessons. We capped off the month of June with Hot Dog party after sailing with monthly awards, a prac- tice that will continue throughtout the summer on the last Tuesday of July and August, so come join us for some sailing and even some Hot Dog eating at the end of July. Jason Massaroni sailed very well to take top honors for the month of June. Congrats Jason! We also had some great Jr. sailors making tre- mendous strides and challenging the leaders each night. They are certainly the future of the club. Welcome one and all, I sincerely hope you find GTYC to be one of the best kept secrets in northern Lake Michigan!

Some Interesting information regarding the orientation of the GTYC flagpole:

A mast should be installed as if it is the mast of a ship putting out to sea, i.e., heading toward an intended viewer. That is, the gaff should point aft. If you stand at the base of the pole looking forward (toward the intended viewer), the extremities of the yardarm are termed port (on your left) and starboard (on you right), just as they would be on a vessel. When the pole is associated with a particular building, the gaff (if any) should extend from the pole in the general direction of the building. Thus, if you stand in or next to the building looking at the pole, think of yourself as looking forward on a ship; the starboard side of the pole is on your right as you face the flagpole.

The gaff is considered to be the honored position. This is why the flag flies from this location and not from the top of the mast.

(Dan S. suggested a Mass Start for Sun. morning as some boats will be heading back to their respective home ports, (not confirmed yet ,but we think that Charlevoix YC may be changing their finish line for the 18th to Omena instead of Northport.

SPONSORS (TO DATE) • LEELANU CELLARS (Their new tasting room facility shares the building on the waterfront in Omena Bay) • KNOT JUST A BAR (Just opened this new location last week Monday, has sister restaurant at latitudes at bay harbor, Petoskey) • WJZQ FM 92.9 (WTCM,AM580) My employer, The promotional efforts on the air for the Horn Dog Regatta were part of our interest in seeing GTYC benefit as much as possible from this event in respect for their sponsor- ship of this regatta and the physical efforts involved in conducting these two races. The registration fee of $30.00 is paid to GTYC. If other yacht clubs choose to participate which we encourage, the reg. fees are thiers to keep. We want interest to build and see this as an annual event to grow deep into the future. PLEVAS MEATS (Tom and Connie Pleva of Cedar are to furnish homemade dogs and brats, we love ‘em be- cause they are real Leelanau County!)

SUPPORT BUSINESS • TAMARACK GALLERY (Sally Viskochil, Owner, has volunteered to keep her fine art gallery open late Satur- day night untill 8pm. They are directly across the street from the event at Leelanau cellars and enthusiastic about greeting and entertaining new visitors to the village of Omena) The gallery features some truly fantastic regional and nationally renowned artists and is a thrill to visit. OMENA BAY COUTRY STORE (Sunny, the owner is a wonderful silver haired true salt of the earth with the most beautiful sincere eyes you will ever see. She has the only store in the village and normally closes early on Saturdays. For us she will remain open till 8pm. This is great as boaters often need a quick pick of items, espe- cially if they are spending the night in the bay on anchor or rafted up along the 300 yards of drop off edge right in front of the Leelanau Cellars facility.

A WELCOME MAT FROM OMENA TRAVERSE YACHT CLUB, (on the opposite shore across the bay about 1/3 mile away is the beautiful yacht club building. Bill Knorp, the Commodore for the past 3 years has arranged through their governing board to invite our members to visit them during a welcome time of 5pm to 7pm Saturday night. Bill is stepping down Aug 15th and Mr. Tom Buhler is replacing him. I hope we are cordial and gentle in the bay during the night as we want this welcome mat to stay open. In years to come this relationship development may be very important. Bill said they will provide 'set ups' for anyone coming over with their own hard beverages. The front porch and yard and beach are all priceless, however the building is incredible, built in 1911 like a wooden grange hall it is the most beautiful yacht club in the Grand Traverse region. They agreed to drive anyone back to the party that just walks the one mile along the shore road. to their home (Historical footnote; back in the fifties and sixties GTYC AND OTYC were very active partners in the development of serious Class Racing. For almost thirty years a healthy fun relationship bonded the two clubs in competitive spirit and great ca- maraderie).

REGISTERED RACERS. For those vessels that register, either over the internet with GTYC, or at the last min- ute on Saturday the 18th, we have embroidered race hats and colorful regatta t-shirts for their crews, as well as the supper after the race provided by Knot Just a Bar, there will be a festivities tent and entertainment for Satur- day night to encourage boaters to spend the night comfortably. The wine tasting room will be staffed and we are providing courtesy vessels to ferry boaters from and to the event and their boats. An awards ceremony after din- ner under the tent will be conducted and another after Sunday’s return race to GTYC. At that ceremony the over- all best time prize will be awarded; a luxury condo weekend above the knot just a bar restaurant with all glass views of the bay and an outdoor deck (this is still under completion and will not be available as an immediate oc- cupancy). A WJZQ RADIO announcer will be out on the water accompanying the race giving live race updates every 20 minutes on WJZQ THE BREEZE! and we hope to have something special at the finish line. Greg Nachazel at WEVERYTHING 2 Discharged (this article came to us from Eric Lind, who found it on Sailing Anarchy, 07/26/07)

This comes to us from a concerned reader. Maybe we're high, but this almost seems inevitable, does it not?

For 34 years the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has exempted discharges from recreational boats from the Clean Water Act permit system. Regretfully, a recent court ruling can- celled this permit exemption. EPA is required by the court decision to develop and implement by September 30, 2008 a national permit system for ALL vessels in the United States for a variety of normal operational discharges.

We have been working behind the scenes with other boating organizations to get the exemption reinstated for recreational boats. Fortunately, the Recreational Boating Act of 2007 (H.R. 2550) has been introduced by Representatives Gene Taylor (D-Miss) and Candice Miller (R-Mich) which would protect recreational boats from being swept into this unnecessary and expensive permitting system.

It is critically important that H.R. 2550 be passed and your support is essential. Please contact your Congressman and Senators TODAY and ask that they co-sponsor or support H.R. 2550.

If the permit system becomes a reality, you will be required to pay for a state permit for each of your boats. EPA will be monitoring your deck runoff, grey water, bilge water, engine cooling water, and the use of copper bottom paints.

The original lawsuit that led to this court decision sought to address ballast water discharges from large ocean-going ships, which can introduce damaging aquatic invasive species into U.S. waters. Keeping our waterways clean and preventing the spread of invasive species is of utmost impor- tance to the future of boating. But taking a complex permitting system designed for industrial dis- chargers and applying it to recreational boats will not yield significant environmental benefits and it will come at a very high cost. Requiring recreational boaters to purchase a permit would not pre- vent the spread of invasive species.

BoatUS has been a leader in educating boaters about Clean Boating practices for more than a decade. Our nonprofit Foundation has funded local education projects on invasive species preven- tion, helped develop voluntary Clean Marina programs, and authored much of the country's Clean Boating outreach. These positive education efforts are making a difference.

Please ask your elected federal representatives to support H.R. 2550. It is common-sense legisla- tion. As you send your emails to your Members of Congress, please copy BoatUS at GovtAf- [email protected] . We'd also like to ask you to send a copy of your correspondence to the EPA, so they can see how this will affect citi- zens. However, please know that if you choose to send it to EPA, it will become a Volunteer Opportunity part of the public record. 30 LEUKEMIA CUP REGATTA A HUGE SUCCES Many thanks to everyone who participated in the 4th of July Leukemia Cup Re- gatta. With everyone’s help in collecting dona- tions, purchasing items from the Silent Auction, dinner proceeds, and the regatta registration we were able to raise just over $10,000 for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society!! A tremendous accomplishment and we can’t thank you enough. The staff from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society was impressed with the turnout and very compli- mentary of the Grand Traverse Yacht Club and everyone associ- ated with the event. We appreciate the support of the membership and the Board of Directors in helping put this event together. Hopefully we can do it again next year and S!! By Jamie & Laura Stuursma have just as much fun!! We served just over 150 people for dinner and had countless others there for post race refreshments and of course the fireworks. Of course an event of this size and success has some key volunteers who were instrumental in helping us organize the day. A hearty thank you to Than and Megan Dykstra, Mac & Heather VanStratt, Bill and Betsy Van Westen, Eric & Ginny Lind, Mark & Greta Lyons, and many others who pitched in on the day of the event. Thanks to you all!!

Dee Smith, GTYC social member, spoke to the Board on behalf of The Watershed Center. She requested an opportunity for John Nelson, Grand Traverse Baykeeper, to speak to the membership on water quality issues that affect all of us. Friday, September 14, was sched- uled for his presentation; 6-6:30 pm with dinner to follow.

New Social memberships were approved for: John P. Guba Thomas Reeber Matthew and Elizabeth Carolan Paul & Tracie Kochanny

Knot Just a Bar & Knot Just a Race Regatta is set for August 18-19, $15 entry fee per boat. There will be a sailboat race to Omena on Saturday and back to TC on Sunday. Cruising and power boats should just enjoy a cruise up to the event. All crew attending the skipper’s meeting will be given a voucher that will entitle them to a hat, tee shirt, commemorative wine glass, dinner, and breakfast. Boats will be available to shuttle crews to shore.

Elmer’s has suggested adding rip-rap on the north side to protect our launch ramp. Coke machine will be removed from our premises. In- stallation of new cash register requires staff training and will probably not be completed until Fall.

I hope you’ve been able to use your club and our beau- tiful waterfront. July brought us the 4th activities along with a big turnout for the Leukemia Cup, an In- terlake regatta mid month and the TC to Suttons bay race on the last weekend. 5 or 6 of our lucky “Cruiser” couples headed for the North Channel and a few boats did the Chicago/ Mac race. That’s what I love about this place, something for everyone!

Best wishes to all. September Board Briefs Discussed ramp repair proposal. It was suggested we include proposed site plan in Waterlines for members to review. Questions were raised about how much cost would increase to raise rock wall by an additional 1-2 feet, and whether it would be the same cost to raise wall during initial construction or at a later date. Also need to find out if cost will be same if project is completed in fall or spring. We need to make sure our permit will allow us to maintain the project.

New computer – need tech savvy member to take responsibility for the system. Proposed IT committee to include Cowell, Wyckoff, K. Stepnitz, and Scott Porter.

Fall Friday meal plan – Charley will continue through 2007, with crew meals beginning again in 2008. Shrimp to continue on Wednesdays.

Bar tab management issue – Motion approved to adopt Club policy that Members are expected to settle their bar tab each night and if not settled that night, tab must be settled before a new tab can be opened by that Member. Commodore’s Ball – October 20 th with reserved seating; cost to be determined. Awards Banquet – November 10 th to include light appetizers and drinks.

Discussed the Club policy regarding pets on the premises.

Rental Agreement to be modified. Should address capacity, tent size limits, prohibit taking flag pole down, cleaning, checklist, etc.

2008 Dues – to remain same as 2007.

Committee Boat – Club’s newer engine to be placed on existing committee boat.

Work on the cable ship Reliance Last month I wrote how we were off the coast of Columbia. The loca- tion has changed now, but the scenery is still the same, water, water everywhere. After finishing the cable repair job off Columbia we headed for the Pa- nama Canal which we transited on the night of the ninth of August, and it was raining, so I really didn't see much. Our destination was Salinas, Ecuador, just below the equator. Another nice resort town, but no shore time there either. Our job was to lay a fiber optic cable from there to Mancora, Peru, and then hook up to a branching line which will bring high speed internet and the 21st century to that part of the world. We are now in the final stages of hooking up the branch line and it is the 6th of Sept. We are about 130 miles north by northeast of the Galapagos Islands and have been at sea now for forty-seven days without supplies or getting off the ship. That means the fresh fruit and milk and salad veggies are all gone. To pass the time the Philippino crew has a karaoke machine in their day room And what they lack in talent they more than make up for in exuberance. Old "Blue Eyes" Frank Sinatra seems to be one of their favorites. They also fish. Last night was especially productive. They caught a great number of squid, some in the two-foot range and others smaller. The squid are quite beautiful when they are first hauled out of the sea, rose colored and white underneath. Unfortunately the skin turns very dark, almost black as they expire. The Philip- pinos also hauled in about twenty fair-sized dorado, or mahi mahi. They don't waste anything when it comes to fish. As I have learned, fish heads and rice is not just saying. It is dinner! Which brings us to this months recipe:

Squid Adobo Start with a couple of pounds of cleaned squid cut into nice sized pieces Mix together 3/4 cup soy sauce 1/2 cup vinegar apple cider or rice wine works well 1 tbsp. whole black pepper, slightly crushed 3 or 4 bay leaves half a medium onion cut to a large dice about two tbsp. of minced garlic Pour this over the squid and let marinade for about twenty minutes Meanwhile brown the rest of the onion until nicely caramelized then toss in another 2 tbsp. of minced garlic and cook briefly. Last, toss in the squid with the marinade and cook at a fast simmer for at least fifteen minutes or longer until the squid is somewhat tender, adding a little water if necessary. The sauce should reduce down to a point where it is thin but has a slight heaviness to it, enough to stick a bit to the squid. Adobo sauce can be used with cut up chicken or pork also by changing the cooking times. Just cook until the meat is tender. Serve with rice and I guess fried fish heads if you want. TACS BOATHOUSE UPDATE DAVE SKIBOWSKI We have recently completed our 14th season of teaching area youth how to sail and mak- ing sailing opportunities available to the community and it was another successful year. As most of you know, the program has grown from a handful of borrowed boats to a fleet of over 70 sailboats and from a handful of students to well over 300 youth and several dozen adults each year. Since the inception of the TACS program, the dream of building a boat- house to house our growing fleet and to help organize the daily usage of these boats has been growing. First it was grand ideas, then designs were drawn on paper and the site was documented and prepared. After what seems like a lifetime of planning, we are now seeing the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel and our dream is near reality!!! By next season, we hope to be in our new facility and the Officers and Directors, our hard-working staff, and all of the area youth that enjoy this great program are excited to see this dream come true. For some time now, we have been raising money for the boathouse and have been setting it aside for this project. Our efforts received a huge boost this past year when we received a matching grant from the Kellogg Foundation for $100,000 plus we have also received some sizeable donations from area individuals, foundations, and organizations. Our goal is now in sight, but we need an additional $175,000 and we need your help to put the capital campaign for the TACS Boathouse over the top. As TACS is truly a community organization, we are asking you, the members of the com- munity, to chip in and help put us over the top. We will be sending you some information along with a return envelope to assist you in making a pledge. Should you have any ques- tions, please don’t hesitate to contact me or any of the TACS Board Members. 2007

GRAND TRAVERSE YACHT CLUB BOARD BRIEFS - OCTOBER 16, 2007

Treasurer’s Report Many 2007 special events earned more than budgeted. Membership revenues are also ahead of budget. A financial surplus is estimated for the end of the year. Action Items The Board accepted a letter of resignation from Club Secretary Jon Siebers; Jon is moving to North Carolina. New membership applications: Alan and Inge Boudreau Scott and Susan Ueland The position of Food and Beverage Manager was discussed. Dock Update – More sections have been completed but deck material has not yet been ordered. A ladder for each dock will be built. A letter proposing possible dock configurations was addressed. Discussion Items Awards Banquet is scheduled for November 10. Entry charge will be $10. The launch ramp repairs will not be completed until Spring. The width of the proposed stone jetty was a concern; further discussion with Elmer’s is required. The Computer Technology committee will meet with our computer/cash register representative to gather additional information regarding the system. The mooring field boundaries have been defined. GRAND TRAVERSE YACHT CLUB NOTICES – NOVEMBER WATERLINES BOAT STORAGE NOTICE

Storage of boats at GTYC has come to the end of the season. If you have a sailboat (Laser, In- terlake, Lightning, Melges 24, etc.) or dinghy on the property, please remove it as soon as possi- ble. There is no winter storage at GTYC. Abandoned boats may be sold.

COMMITTEE BOAT NEEDED

The Club owns a Boston Whaler that we use as a race committee boat. It is a great committee boat if you are only on the water for an hour or two and the waves aren’t two rough. It also serves as a great “buoy tender” (moving buoys during a regatta). Unfortunately, there are times when the Club needs a committee boat that can stay on station for several hours, perhaps the whole day. There are times when we need two or more boats to manage a regatta or the Bay is a little too rough for the Whaler.

For example, this past summer Mark & Lisa managed our Wednesday races as well as providing their powerboat as the committee boat. During this summer’s Melges 24 Invitational Weekend Bill & Betsy’s “John Henry” served as our primary committee boat, while the Club’s Whaler and Dave Phelps’ Whaler worked the buoys.

Rather than purchasing a second committee boat, the Board is searching for members who al- ready own an appropriate powerboat and would like to join the race committee. We think it would be less expensive for the Club to pay a member a “stipend” for the use of that member’s powerboat, rather than have the Club purchase another powerboat. The Club manages 45 to 50 days of racing during the season. Most of those races occur on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays evenings. However, we hold almost 10 weekend races or regattas.

The ideal committee boat for these events would be a minimum of 25 feet long, have a head, a good anchoring system, ride well at anchor in a breeze and have a good open aft section. The stipend would range from $40 to $80 depending upon the time commitment for that day. The Club would provide the officials to run the races. You provide the boat and serve as the pilot. If you are interested please contact Charley Meyer 231-922-0800.

RACE COMMITTEE

In addition to our committee boat issue (described above) the Club needs officials to actually run the races. Occasionally a member will volunteer to be the race official. IN this past year Eric Lind, David Skibowski, Than Dykstra and Jamie Stuursma, among others, have managed Club races. More often, however, we pay a member or non-member to serve as race chair. Ideally, we would pay a non-member or a member’s college age child to work for us as a race manager. It seems like one or two person team could cover the Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday race schedule on a reliable basis. If you know good candidate for this position, please contact Scott Porter 231-360-6108. ARE YOU INTERESTED IN WEATHER? Thursday, November 15th The GTYC Cruising Fleet has arranged for a presentation at the November potluck that will interest all members. Greg McMaster, channel 7 & 4 Chief Meteorologist will present Maritime Mysteries and Michigan Meteorology: Weird Weather on the Lakes. Waterspouts, the seiche, St.Elmo’s fire, and the gales of November are some of the topics he will discuss. Come for dinner at 6:00 pm and bring a dish to pass, or come hear the presentation starting about 7:30 pm. This should be a very informative evening for boaters and anyone interested in weather.

Advanced Summer Sailing Camp

This past summer TACS expanded the Advanced Sailing Program in several ways. Fourteen teenagers partici- pated in this two week, full day session during the first two weeks of sailing camp. Ian McGurn headed up the instructor team for this group. The driving objective during this camp session was to provide the young sail- ors a wide range of experience with different boats in different sailing conditions. The idea behind this ap- proach was not to make these sailors experts in a single specific boat class but to give them the necessary knowl- edge and experience to compete at a high level at any regatta in any class of boat they may choose to sail.

With this objective in mind, the sailors were given instruction and practice in single handed La- sers, two-man JY-15’s, and three-man Interlakes with spinnakers. Expert local sailors, with proven racing records, volunteered their time and expertise to augment the TACS instructor team with on-shore presentations followed by on-the-water coaching. The first half of the program was spent on Boardman Lake perfecting basic racing skills in Lasers and JY-15’s. During the second week, thanks to the Interlake Fleet for donating the use of their personal boats, the sailors got the opportunity to practice on the open waters of Grand Traverse Bay. The Grand Traverse Yacht Club graciously allowed the teens to use their facilities for launch, on-shore presentations and practice sessions. They also had the opportu- nity to sail the Manitou through the generosity of the Manitou Captain.

This two week program culminated with the sailors attending several area regattas over the summer with great success and lots of fun. Some of these teens are now competing on a regular weekly basis with the Laser Fleet on Tuesdays and the Interlake Fleet on Thursday evenings. Unfortunately for us old foxes, they are now starting to win! This says it all about the program. Jim Menzies

INTERLAKE "BROKEN RUDDER" AWARD (alias: the "M&M" or "Menzies & Milliman" award). No drama here. For those in the know know that this year's award was earned on the way out to the first practice race of the year, while still in the mooring field! To put it simply, the new quick release pins worked--they released...quickly. Unfortunately these pins were on the standing rigging!!! Fortunately the rig fell slow-mo and no persons or boats were hit or hurt (but we won't mention pride). Way to go LOREN NEWTON!

An excited Interlake Class is coming to TC in Aug for INTERLAKE NA- TIONALS. The Interlake Class enthusiasm was on display at the US SAIL- ING One-Design-Sailing-Symposium this November where the ISCA had more members in attendance than any other other OD Class! Of course this makes sense since the Interlake Class runs the show in the US Sailing One- Design organization with the majority of officers being Interlakers. Be ready for this enthusiasm to add to our local enthusiasm. Its gonna be a good time. Award’s Night

27 28 29 30 31 CLUB OPEN 5-9 PM Ned’s Way By: Ned Lockwood Strategy for racing on a hot summer day with a light to moderate wind on Grand Traverse Bay.

Part I – The First Beat Last July, on a hot Wednesday evening, I had the pleasure of sailing with my grandson, Gus, on Screamin’ Baby. We were participating in the Wednesday evening race. The wind direction was generally right of magnetic north by 5 to 10 degrees. Ten minutes before the start, Gus and I went to the mast, stood on cabin top and looked north. I said to Gus, “What do you see up there?” He said, “Grandpa, there is smooth water around Red 8. The color of the water looks all the same.” I said, “OK Gus, after the start, we should go right.” How did we know to do this? First, we must find the mean wind direction. To find the mean wind direction, head into the wind and note the magnetic heading several times over 10-15 minutes. The average of the headings is the mean wind direction. If the mean wind direction is east of a line down the middle of the bay, then (in four out of five times) the right side will be the favored side of the beat. If the mean wind direction is west of a line down the middle of the bay, the Leelanau beach will be more favorable. The selection of which way you want to go one minute after the start should be made between four and five minute before the start. One minute after the start is when you make your move to the right or left. On this particular Wednesday night race, we planned to go right, but we went left instead because one minute after the start we be- gan to see variable color patterns on the water around Red 8. How did we know to do this? When the water surface appears to be uniform, indicating that the wind is from the same direction and strength everywhere, then you should make your decision about which side to go on the beat based on the mean wind direction alone. When the ap- pearance of the water surface is not uniform, with different colors and shades on the water, there is a significant probability for a counter-clockwise shift near Red 8. In view of this, you may want to go left even if the mean wind direction is from the right. We started on starboard and soon after the start, when we noticed the variable appearance of the water, we decided to stay on starboard tack to get to the left side of the beat. When the counter-clockwise shift appeared, we tacked over to port, contin- ued to get lifted on port tack and laid the mark, rounding first. Gus said, “Good call, Grandpa!” Stayed tuned for strategy on the reaching legs in Part 2… CRUISING CLUB By KAREN DOWNING

Hello Cruisers and other GTYC members. It's me again with another month of programing sponsored by the Cruising Fleet. We're looking forward to an in- formal discussion time (as well as some interesting charts) with Dick Wollum on the subject of cruising the intracoastal waterway. If you have questions, I'm sure Dick will be happy to address them. Our meeting will be December 20th at about 6:00 pm. There will be no entree for this meeting, but we'd like everyone to bring an appetizer to share with the group. This should be a relaxing and pleasant evening. Hope to see you there, Karen

Icky Sticky Coconut Pudding

The pudding

4 ounces dates finely chopped buy em from the store that way, its easier 1 teaspoon baking soda 2 ounces butter 6ounces sugar 2 eggs 6 ounces self rising flour ½ teaspoon vanilla or to taste 3 ounces coconut flakes, fresh unsweetened if you want to mess with it. I just use the stuff from the store 7 inch spring form pan or muffin tins. I usually make a double recipe and use a bigger pan the size of the cake at the pot luck Pour one cup of water over the dates and the coconut. Bring to a boil then remove from heat and add the baking soda. Set aside. Cream the butter till whitened then add sugar a small amount at a time till the mixture is creamy. It will be on the dry side. Add the eggs one at a time and beat well. Carefully fold in flour. Stir in the date coconut mixt and vanilla. Pour into a butter pan or muffin tins and bake at 350 until done.

Sauce 7 ounces light brown sugar 7 tablespoons heavy cream 4.5 ounces butter 3 tablespoons dark rum (yeah right!) I like to go a little heavy on the rum.

Bring all ingredients to a boil for three minutes and reserve. About five min- utes before the cake is done (just set up) poke holes with the handle of a wooden spoon all over the top of the cake and pour sauce over the pudding. Toss chopped macadamia nuts on top and bake until cake is done and top is bubbly and slightly browned. Watch the nuts, don’t burn them.

After cake cools down put diced mango on top.

If having at home, serve with extra sauce on the side to top individual serv- ings. If not after cake is out of oven and still hot spoon more sauce over top to soak in and make it nice GRAND TRAVERSE YACHT CLUB P.O. BOX 131 TRAVERSE CITY, MI 49685-0131
