Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Daniel Reuwer, and I am a seminarian for the Diocese of Arlington. For the past three years I have been studying at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary up in Philadelphia, PA. I am currently in Theology II, which means that I have three more years until I can, God willing, be ordained as a priest for our Diocese. Before entering the seminary, I attended Belmont Abbey College in Charlotte, NC. While I was there, I received degrees in Theology and Political Science. After college I moved to Stafford, VA, where I worked as a teacher at St. William of York Catholic School. In addition to being the Athletic Director, I taught religion and in the middle school. I have felt called to the priesthood for as long as I can remember, but it was my time at St. William of York which really gave me the opportunity to step into the unknown and explore the desire that God had placed in my heart. As a religion teacher, I had the opportunity each day to share my faith with the students and with my colleagues. I was blessed to get to know some wonderful families and to help them to know that God loves them and is present in their lives. My experience of walking with others on their faith journeys led me to really pray about my own. I realized that I found joy and peace when I focused upon my faith. I found fulfilment in those moments where I was able to put others before myself. I began to desire to become more involved in the Church. In turn, my increased involvement made the question of priesthood more unavoidable in my own prayer. Finally, I met with a priest who gave me the best advice I ever received: Most people don’t feel even an inkling of a calling to the priesthood or the religious life, so if you do, you really owe it to yourself to check it out. Following that priest’s advice has led me on step after step into adventure. While I could never have anticipated all of the experiences I’ve had over the last three years, I wouldn’t change them, either. Best yet, I know the adventure of walking with is far from over. This summer, it has led me right here to Christ the Redeemer. I am so incredibly excited to see what this summer has in store. I feel like I have seen Christ’s face during each step of my journey so far, and cannot wait to see His face in yours when I meet each of you here at Christ the Redeemer. Know that you are in my prayers, and please keep me in yours as well. God bless!

A Word from the Pastor… on the Sunday of the Most Holy Trinity

The easiest way for any bishop, priest, deacon or theologian to become a heretic, one who teaches falsely about God, is to write or speak about the Holy Trinity. Every analogy or image ever used to try to explain the Trinity ultimately leads to heresy or erroneous teachings. “Trinity” is the word we use to describe the unity in nature of the three Divine Persons: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. It is essentially a combination of the terms three (triple) and unity. The simplest accurate statement of our understanding of the Trinity is:

God is one Divine Nature in three Divine Persons.

Though this is a very easy statement to memorize, it difficult to understand, and impossible to conceptualize or imagine. It is completely outside of our experience. To the right you will see a late medieval shield developed to help people to understand the concept of the Most Holy Trinity, it says: The Father is God; The Son is God; The Holy Spirit is God. The Father is not the Son and is not the Holy Spirit. The Son is not the Father and is not the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is not the Father and is not the Son.

What does this mean for us and how does this impact our everyday life and practice of our Faith? I see three clear lessons from the Trinity. First, no one could have made this up. It is so far beyond the human experience that it is impossible for us to conceptualize, and therefore must be revealed truth from God. Second, it shows us how different we are from God or how “other” God is from us. In other words, to appreciate more that there is an infinite chasm of difference between God and us, and that it takes a Divine Person to bridge this infinite gap. Third, there is an inherent invitation to have a relationship with each of the Divine Persons of the Trinity. We should have a personal relationship with God, the Father and one with God, the Son and a personal relationship with God, the Holy Spirit. Each of these relationships are very real interpersonal relationships between us and God.

Are we thoroughly confused yet? We are not alone in this feeling. One of my favorite authors and theologians is St. Augustine of Hippo, a 5th century bishop in Africa. He spent a good portion of his life dedicated to bringing clarity to our understanding of God. He wrote arguably what is still considered the definitive work on the Trinity, called De Trinitate or “About the Trinity”. Despite have written this, he felt that he had not begun to scratch the surface of this great mystery of our Faith.

The following story about St. Augustine is paraphrased from Legenda Aurea by Jacobus de Varagine:

St. Augustine was walking on the beach contemplating the mystery of the Trinity. Then he saw a boy in front of him who had dug a hole in the sand with his hands and was going out to the sea again and again with a spoon to bring some water to put into the hole. St. Augustine marveled at him and asked him what he was doing. The boy said, “I’m going to put the entire ocean into this hole.” “That is impossible, the whole sea is so great and large and the pit and spoon so little.” said St. Augustine. The boy replied, “It is easier for me to draw all the water of the sea and bring it to this hole than for you to bring the mystery of the Trinity and His divinity into your little mind.” And then the boy vanishes.
