Deacon Darrell Moulton: Why was I chosen? More interesting could be, “why did I say yes”? Daily Readings I always answer that question with “it’s a mystery”. In the Saturday, August 14 Jos 24:14-29/Ps 16:1-2a, and 5, 7- early 80’s I was busy working and helping raise 5 children, 8, 11 [cf. 5a]/Mt 19:13-15 and I had no time to consider any ministry other than help- Sunday, August 15 Vigil: 1 Chr 15:3-4, 15-16; 16:1-2/Ps ing with the Mary Queen food pantry. Tuesday, August 17 Jgs 6:11-24a/Ps 85:9, 11-12, 13-14 [cf. 9b]/Mt 19:23-30 We began the classes at the seminary and I remembered Wednesday, August 18 Jgs 9:6-15/Ps 21:2-3, 4-5, 6-7 that I was not a good student but persevered and fearfully [2a]/Mt 20:1-16 arrived at the day of ordination. And then, I was struck down. As we lay 6c-7, 8-9a, 9bc-10 [1b]/Mt 22:34-40 prostrate on the floor, the Spirit of God came to me and I Saturday, August 21 Ru 2:1-3, 8-11; 4:13-17/Ps 128:1b- began to cry almost uncontrollably. The Mass continued 2, 3, 4, 5 [4]/Mt 23:1-12 and we were assigned to distribute communion. I was still Sunday, August 22 Jos 24:1-2a, 15-17, 18b/Ps 34:2-3, crying! The very first person to receive from my hand was 16-17, 18-19, 20-21, 22-23 [9a]/Eph 5:21-32 or 5:2a, 25- 32/Jn 6:60-69 a Priest, and I was still crying. I told him that I cannot say the words, “The Body of Christ”. I guess I stumbled through that and was ordained to the service of Deacon. My call to ministry was a mystery but the gifts that I have received are precious. If you trust in God, He will take you places that you never thought possible. You will come to understand life’s sadness and life’s joys. Through others you will find yourself. It may take many years of service to God’s plan, but the reward is eternal.

13 The Assumption WWMD? WWJD bracelets were all the rage about 25 years ago in Question: What lessons should I learn from the Christian circles. I’ve always wondered if a WWMD ? bracelet might not make just as much sense, and maybe more. What Would Mary Do? Answer: Growing in holiness is similar to training in a sport. We need someone to show us how we can live our I would argue that Mary was the most exemplary steward faith well. Mary is a model of sanctity. She shows us how who ever lived. Her answer was always “Yes.” Yes, Lord, to be faithful to God’s will, living each day with confidence I am Your handmaiden. Yes, I will visit Elizabeth, and in God’s mercy and love. At the Nativity, in Jesus’ public help her in the last difficult months of pregnancy. Yes, I ministry, and at the Crucifixion, we see her steadfast will bring my son up in the Mosaic law and present him at trust. She allows the Lord to use her life to accomplish his the Temple of Jerusalem. Yes, I will give him to the crowds and to public ministry. Yes, I will offer him on this plan for her and for all of us. In the Preface of the Mass Cross, if it is Your will. for the Assumption of Mary, we pray: “For today the Virgin Mother of God was assumed into heaven as the Yes, yes, yes. beginning and image of your Church’s coming to Well, I can’t be like Mary, we think to ourselves. There’s perfection and a sign of sure hope and comfort to your an intimidation factor with the Blessed Mother and pilgrim people.” Catholics sometimes — one that almost exceeds that of Christ. Perhaps it’s because we are in awe of the fact that It is this image of holiness that we strive to imitate. In the she was not divine in any way — she was a mere office, at home, or in our community, we look for signs of creation, like us — but somehow, she always had the God’s grace that call us to an ever greater love of him courage to say yes. How could she do it, when we find it and each other. A greater awareness of God is a sign of so hard? our conversion of heart that lives the lessons Mary teaches. Well, God certainly lavished on Mary extraordinary graces. Her lack of original sin liberated her to conform ©LPi her will to God’s. But God is impatient to give us, too, all the graces we need to be a steward in the example of Mary. He’s waiting for us simply to ask. Just as in Adam we died, so in Christ — through Mary — we live. What can we say yes to today, in Mary’s example? Get up and eat, or the journey will be too much for you.” - Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS ©LPi
