Indian Cinema, Postcolonialism, and Social Justice: an Interview with Nandita Das1
Postcolonial Text, Vol 13, No 3 (2018) Indian Cinema, Postcolonialism, and Social Justice: An Interview with Nandita Das1 Manav Ratti Salisbury University, Maryland, USA Introduction Nandita Das (b. 1969) is one of India’s most eminent filmmakers and actors, renowned in particular for her work in art cinema (or parallel cinema, as it is also called in India), the genre of pioneering filmmakers Ritwik Ghatak (1925-1976), Satyajit Ray (1921-1992), Mrinal Sen (b. 1923), and Tapan Sinha (1924-2009). Das (Figure 1) has, in some respects, pursued an unconventional path into the Indian film industry, for it is not her first professional pursuit, and she does not hail from a film family (distinguished in their fields, her father, Jatin Das, is a painter; and her mother, Varsha Das, is a writer). Born in Mumbai and growing up in New Delhi, Das worked with NGOs for several years before entering the film industry, building on her Master’s degree from the Delhi School of Social Work in the University of Delhi. Her work has gained recognition and respect for its uniqueness, urgency, awareness, and authenticity. Known for her social justice advocacy, Das’s national and international commitments span a range of issues, such as violence against women, children’s rights, HIV/AIDS, poverty, and interreligious harmony. She has supported India’s “Dark is Beautiful” campaign, which raises awareness about colourism, a form of prejudice and discrimination that devalues darker skin colours while privileging lighter ones. -
Caste and Gender Dynamics in Indian Cinema from 1930S to 2000S
www.ijird.com March, 2014 Vol 3 Issue 3 ISSN 2278 – 0211 (Online) Caste and Gender Dynamics in Indian Cinema from 1930s to 2000s Khushee Saroha Assistant Professor, Shyama Prasad Mukherji College, Delhi, India Abstract: This paper aims at drawing a trajectory of how Indian cinema has grown in its portrayal of caste and gender issues over the decades. A rear view would reveal that Indian cinema’s first decade both before and after Independence did respond quite strongly to the socialist nerves as issue of caste became a part of the popular film narratives like in Achhut Kanya (1936) and Sujata (1959). The 1960s however, saw cinema narrowing down its concerns to the socio-economic confines of the upper-middle class people. Then from the 1970s began the Amitabh era which shifted the Indian cinema into a very imaginative space with the ‘angry young man’ trope at its centre. It never occurred to any filmmaker to portray a Dalit protagonist fighting against social evils. However, the parallel or the new wave cinema did make efforts to bring the lower caste subjectivity on the big screen. The social questions like of caste-based gender violence and feudal exploitation gathered remarkable momentum through films like Shyam Benegal’s Ankur (1974). The latter part of the paper deals mainly with films belonging to the later decades of the twentieth century and portrays the change that a Dalit woman’s persona has gone through over the decades. The stereotypes are done away with; and the rebelliousness and the fighting spirit among rural Dalit women, which is a novel phenomenon has been explored in these offbeat films, namely, Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen (1994), Jag Mundhra’s Bawandar (2000), and Priyadarshan’s Aakrosh (2010). -
Bhanwari Devi Rape Case: a Brief Reflection
Social Science Review Volume 4, Issue 1, June 2018 ISSN 2518-6825 Bhanwari Devi Rape Case: A Brief Reflection Isha Sharma1 One of the first things that come to our mind when we talk about India is Hinduism. This may be because despite the presence of a number of religions in India the most popularized one is Hinduism. Although Hinduism is a religion characterized by diverse religious beliefs and practices; what remains at the core of this religion is the caste system, arising from the concepts of Karma and Dharma, and maintained through the ideas of purity and pollution. The enthusiasts of this system argue that caste system is a scientific system of division of labor. However, one cannot ignore the discrimination and oppression of certain groups of society that this system has enabled and facilitated throughout generations. Such discrimination and oppression, interestingly, has never been questioned or punished by the country’s legal system; instead, what one finds is that more often than not, the caste system surpasses the legal system of India. One of the best examples for this may be the rape case of Bhanwari Devi. Residing in a small village in Rajasthan called Bhateri, Bhanwari Devi belongs to a low caste family of potters. An illiterate Dalit woman, Bhanwari was married off by her family when she was only a child. As a result of her upbringing and social environment she never saw any evil in social practices of child marriage, female illiteracy, domination of upper caste, preference of male child and the likes. It was only after she met Ms. -
