SUK* The Nineteenth Amendment’s ratification in 1920 spawned new initiatives to advance the status of women, including the proposal of another constitutional amendment that would guarantee women equality in all legal rights, beyond the right to vote. Both the Nineteenth Amendment and the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) grew out of the long quest to enshrine women’s equal status under the law as citizens, which began in the nineteenth century. Nearly a century later, the ERA remains unfinished business with an uncertain future. Suffragists advanced different visions and strategies for women’s empowerment after they got the constitutional right to vote. They divided over the ERA. Their disagreements, this Essay argues, productively postponed the ERA, and reshaped its meaning over time to be more responsive to the challenges women faced in exercising economic and political power because they were mothers. Open to all girls since its inception, the GSUSA offers Girl Scouts training in both gender-conforming and nontraditional vocations. However, during the first half of the twentieth century, segregation and domesticity was emphasized in American society. -

Feminism is the advocacy of women's rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes. ★ Work to level the playing field between genders ★ Ensure that women and girls have the same opportunities in life available to boys and men ★ Gain overall respect for women’s experiences, identities, knowledge and strengths ★ Challenge the systemic inequalities women face on a daily basis History behind the Feminist Movement First wave feminism (property and voting rights): In 1848, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott hosted the Seneca Falls Convention where they proclaimed their Declaration of Sentiments. From that we have the famous quote, “We hold these truths to be self-evident; that all men and women are created equal”. They also demanded the right to vote. The women's suffrage movement had begun. With the exceptional work done by women during WWI, the 19th Amendment was passed granting women the right to vote. Women began to enter the workplace following The Great Depression. Women had active roles in the military during WWII. Following the Civil Rights movement, the Equal Pay Act was passed in 1963 to begin to address the unequal pay women in the workplace faced. Second wave feminism (equality and discrimination): In 1971, feminist Gloria Steinem joined Betty Friedan and Bella Abzug in founding the National Women’s Political Caucus. During this time many people had started referring to feminism as “women’s liberation.” In 1972 the Equal Rights Amendment was passed and women gained legal equality and discrimination of sex was banned. -

Brewer MANHATTAN BOROUGH PRESIDENT Brewer_WomensHistory_Final.indd 1 2/25/20 4:08 PM One Hundred Years of Voting A century has passed since American suffragists girded for their final push to win the ballot for women in every corner of the United States. Under the skilled and persistent direction of Carrie Chapman Catt, and spurred by the energy of Alice Paul’s National Woman Party, the 19th Amendment won approval on August 26, 1920. In this pamphlet, we find reminders of the struggles and achievements of New York women who spoke, marched, and even fought for the vote and the full panoply of rights. These were women who marched to Albany in the winter, or demonstrators who were jailed for their protests in Washington. Crystal Eastman, a young activist, spoke a large truth when she said, after ratification, “Now we can begin.” To complete one task is to encounter the next. Indeed, even after a hundred years we must still seek to complete the work of attaining women’s equality. Sincerely, Gale A. With difficulty, she won her freedom, moved to New York City, and joined the Methodist Church on John Street. She then changed her name to Sojourner Truth and spent the rest of her long life speaking against slavery and for women’s rights. -

Sara M. EvanS Women’s Liberation: Seeing the Revolution Clearly Approximately fifty members of the five Chicago radical women’s groups met on Saturday, May 18, 1968, to hold a citywide conference. The main purposes of the conference were to create and strengthen ties among groups and individuals, to generate a heightened sense of common history and purpose, and to provoke imaginative pro- grammatic ideas and plans. In other words, the conference was an early step in the process of movement building. —Voice of Women’s Liberation Movement, June 19681 EvEry account of thE rE-EmErgEncE of feminism in the United States in the late twentieth century notes the ferment that took place in 1967 and 1968. The five groups meeting in Chicago in May 1968 had, for instance, flowered from what had been a single Chicago group just a year before. By the time of the conference in 1968, activists who used the term “women’s liberation” understood themselves to be building a movement. Embedded in national networks of student, civil rights, and antiwar movements, these activists were aware that sister women’s liber- ation groups were rapidly forming across the country. In 1910, Crystal Eastman Was One of the Most Conspicuous Progressive Reformers in America
In 1910, Crystal Eastman was one of the most conspicuous progressive reformers in America. By the 1920s, her ardent suffragism, insistent anti-militarism, gregarious internationalism, and uncompromising feminism branded her “the most dangerous woman in America” and led to her exile in England. Yet a century later, her legacy in shaping several defining movements of the modern era–labor, feminism, free speech, peace–is unquestioned. A founder of the ACLU and Woman’s Peace Party, Eastman was a key player in a constellation of high- stakes public battles from the very beginning of her career. She first found employment investigating labor conditions–an endeavor that would produce her iconic publication, Work Accidents and the Law, (1910), a catalyst for the first workers’ compensation law. Crystal conducted her research of Pittsburgh area work places in 1906-07. She would go on to fight for the rights of women, penning the Equal Rights Amendment with Alice Paul. As a pacifist in the First World War era, she helped to found the Civil Liberties Bureau, which evolved into the ACLU. With her brother, the writer Max Eastman, she frequented the radical, socialist circles of Greenwich Village. She was also a radical of the politics of private life, bringing attention to cutting-edge issues such as reproductive rights, wages for housework, and single motherhood by choice. The social justice issues to which Eastman dedicated her life – gender equality and human rights, nationalism and globalization, political censorship and media control, worker benefits and family balance, and the monumental questions of war, sovereignty, force, and freedom – remain some of the most consequential questions of our own time. -

Everywhere that strug gle involves the issues of free speech, free press and peaceful assemblage. Everywhere the powers of organized business challenge the right of workers to organize, unionize, strike and picket. The hysterical attacks on "red" propaganda, on radical opinion of all sorts, are in substance a single masked at tack on the revolt of labor and the farmers against industrial tyranny. The hysteria aroused by the war, with its machinery for crushing dissenting opinion, is now directed against the advocates of indus trial freedom. Thirty-five states have passed laws against "criminal syndicalism," crim inal anarchy" or "sedition." Even cities en· act such laws. A wholesale campaign is on to deny the right to strike, by compulsory arbitration and by injunction. The nation wide open-shop crusade is a collossal attempt to destroy all organization of labor. Patrioteering societies, vigilantes, "loyalty leagues," strike-breaking troops or State Con stabularies and the hired gunmen of private corporations contend with zealous local prose cutors in demonstrating their own brands of "law and order." Meetings of workers and farmers are prohibited and broken up, speak ers are mobbed and prosecuted.
