The Kyodo Senpaku whaling fleet has steadily increased the number of whales it kills and has expanded the species harpooned from minkes to include Bryde’s and sperm whales. In June 2005, the Japanese government announced plans to add endangered southern hemisphere fin and threatened humpback whales to the growing list of great whale species that Nissui and its partners in Kyodo Senpaku kill. As I write this, the Kyodo Senpaku fleet is sailing for the Antarctic Whale Sanctuary, established in 1994 with overwhelming support by the IWC to protect great whales from continued hunting. Some whale populations in the Southern Ocean were nearly wiped out due to 20th century whaling. Through its vice presidency of the Japan Fisheries Association, Nissui consistently supports an end to the IWC’s ban on commercial whaling.     Viral Communications Exploring Provenance of Tuna using Distributed Ledgers Océane Boulais Published on: Feb 27, 2019 Updated on: Jun 10, 2019 Viral Communications Exploring Provenance of Tuna using Distributed Ledgers Motivation Currently decentralized networks that employ distributed ledger technologies (DLT), such as blockchain, are implemented in a myriad of use cases from digital currencies (ie Bitcoin and Ethereum) to enterprise solutions. In this research thrust, we are interested in the application of DLT for the opaque supply chains of today, specifically those that are correlated with violating conservation and social responsibility efforts. The use of blockchain technology for opaque supply chains are only being recently explored by a series of startups in collaboration with conservation-oriented NGOs who have deployed initiatives or pilot studies investigating the provenance of commonly consumed species of tuna, such as Skipjack tuna. Over 31% of the world’s global fish stocks are overfished, therefore a variety of NGOs work with stakeholders to reform fisheries management globally, focusing on sustainable practices that conserve ecosystems, but also sustain livelihoods and ensure food security. Distributed ledgers have the potential to make the tuna fishery supply chains more transparent and traceable, allowing consumers to refuse mislabeled produce or produce caught via IUU1 fishing methods that encompass modern slavery. As of today, the pilot studies discussed in this article are funded either through a blend of Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs) and venture capital funds or local governments that unite with NGOs (ie Conservation International, the World Wide Fund for Nature, etcetera). In order to generate the necessary momentum to incentivize the multitude of “human layers” in the tuna supply chain to append data with integrity to the distributed ledger, these NGOs work with large conglomerates to pressure the suppliers into holding their product sources accountable.

On May 27, 2006, central part of Java Island, Indonesia, was struck by a heavy earthquake, claiming more than 5,000 human lives and injuring almost 40,000, creating over 400,000 refugees and causing damages to more than 500,000 houses. Believing that the damages there were extensive, Nippon Keidanren initiated fund raising activities and provided solicited funds and goods such as tents and water purifiers for Indonesian people through Red Cross and NPOs under the auspice of the Japan Platform.
