Cygnet Dogfight Press Release For Immediate Release: June 10, 2015 Contact: Toni Robin, (858) 483-3918 [email protected] CYGNET THEATRE LAUNCHES SEASON 13 WITH THE MUSICAL ‘DOGFIGHT’ Movie-turned-Musical Takes on Love, Friendship and Self Discovery in Wartime 60’s “Easily the most delicate, surprising and musically satisfying score since Spring Awakening.” - Time Out New York "Dogfight is something special! Studded with impressive songs, an unexpected love affair, and a genuine and charming soul." - Associated Press "An intimate little heart-breaker of beguiling freshness." - Newsday SAN DIEGO, CA– Cygnet Theatre will kick off its13th season in July as director Sean Murray mounts the West Coast Premiere of Dogfight, a romantic and comic musical adaptation of the 1991 movie with River Phoenix and Lili Taylor. Winner of the Lucille Lortel Award for Best Musical in 2013, Dogfight represents the new generation of voices in musical theatre creation. The San Diego premiere runs July 16 - August 23. Opening night for media is July 25. Featuring music and lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (called “heirs to Rodgers and Hammerstein” by Variety), and a book by Peter Duchan, Dogfight wowed the critics when it premiered at New York’s Second Stage in 2012. Cygnet Theatre’s San Diego premiere features Patrick Osteen (It’s a Wonderful Life: The Live Radio Play) whose credits include the North American Tour of War Horse. Osteen is a graduate of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Dogfight marks the Cygnet debut of Caitie Grady in the pivotal role of Rose. Grady is a familiar face in San Diego and is well known as a company member at Lamb’s Players Theatre (Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Mixtape). The story begins on November 21, 1963. On the eve of their deployment to a small but growing conflict in Southeast Asia, three young Marines set out for one final boys’ night of debauchery, partying, and maybe a little trouble. But when Corporal Eddie Birdlace meets Rose, an awkward and idealistic waitress he enlists to win a cruel bet with his fellow recruits, she rewrites the rules of the game and teaches him the power of compassion. “I was drawn to this musical not only by the beautiful songs, but what it communicates about human behavior,” explained Murray. “So many issues surface as these characters go through the story and come out changed at the other end.” He added, “I think we can all relate to being pressured to behave in a certain way and learning where we belong.” Rounding out the cast are several actors who have made their mark in recent critically acclaimed productions, including Charles Evans, Jr. (My Fair Lady, A Christmas Carol, Spring Awakening), Alex Hoeffler (Sons of the Prophet) and Debra Wanger (My Fair Lady, Spring Awakening). New to the Cygnet stage are Mel Domingo, Sarah Errington, Bryan Charles Feldman, Ben Gibson, Scott Nickley and Eric Von Metzke. --- MORE --- The production team features music direction by Terry O’Donnell, choreography by David Brannen, costume design by Jacinda Johnston, set design by Sean Fanning, lighting design by Chris Rynne, sound design by David Scott, and properties design by Syd Stevens. Maria Mangiavellano will stage manage. Performances are July 16 through August 23. Show times are Wednesdays and Thursdays at 7:30pm, Fridays at 8:00pm, Saturdays at 3:00pm and 8:00pm, and Sundays at 2:00pm and 7:00pm. • DOGFIGHT (Ein Hässliches Spiel)
DOGFIGHT (Ein hässliches Spiel) Genre: Musical Autoren: Musik und Songtexte von Benj Pasek und Justin Paul Buch von Peter Duchan Nach dem Warner Bros. Film und Drehbuch von Bob Comfort Deutsche Fassung von Daniel Große Boymann Inhalt: Es ist der 21. November 1963.

  • Press Release: EDGES (2021)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Media Alert for Theatre Editors, Reviewers and Calendar Listings Orange County premiere of Edges Chance Theater returns to live in-person performances for the first musical written by the award-winning songwriters of Dear Evan Hansen, Benj Pasek & Justin Paul ANAHEIM, CA: Chance Theater is excited to announce that the Orange County premiere of Pasek and Paul’s musical, Edges will be the third show in its 23rd Anniversary Season, and the first show presented live and in-person since shutting its doors on March 13, 2020. This clever and charming musical is directed by Resident Artist James Michael McHale and music direction is by Resident Artist Robyn Manion. The show is performing July 9 - August 8, 2021. Before they wrote Dear Evan Hansen, La La Land, The Greatest Showman, Dogfight, and many other modern musical classics, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul wrote a thrilling song cycle about four burgeoning adults asking classic coming-of-age questions about love, commitment, identity, and meaning. For the first time in Orange County, see how the Oscar, Grammy, Tony, and Golden Globe Award-winning song team started their journey — with a charming, witty and honest examination of adulthood that explores what happens when we’re teetering on the edge of the rest of our lives. Please note that this show contains adult language. Back in 2005, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul were undergraduates at the University of Michigan who were feeling dissatisfied with the roles they were being cast in for their college shows. Deciding to do something about it, Pasek and Paul (who had casually written only a couple of songs together at this point) decided to produce their own show -- an original piece called Edges that would be made up entirely of songs they would write and would star fellow college students.

  • Developmental Cross Training Repertoire for Musical Theatre
Developmental Cross Training Repertoire for Musical Theatre Women The repertoire suggestions below target specific developmental goals. It is important to keep in mind however that the distinguishing characteristic of musical theatre singing is the variability of tonal resonance within any given song. A predominantly soprano song might suddenly launch into a belt moment. A chest dominant ballad may release into a tender soprano. Story always pre-empts musical choices. “Just You Wait” from My Fair Lady is part of the soprano canon but we would be disappointed if Eliza could not tell Henry Higgins what she really felt. In order to make things easier for beginning students, it’s a good idea to find repertoire with targeted range and consistent quality as students develop skill in coordinating registration. Soprano Mix—Beginner, Teens to Young Adult Examples of songs to help young sopranos begin to feel functionally confident and enthusiastic about characters and repertoire. Integrating the middle soprano is a priority and it is wise to start there.
