! All you want to know about stage makeup! ! !Important!! Stage lights will make you look puffy, pale and washed out. Make sure you apply make- up so the people in the back row can see your face - and that your face will look it’s best! Do not apply make-up like you would if you are going out for the night - it won’t be enough to do the job.! ! Men - yes, you will be wearing make-up: , blush, and mascara/.! ! We have photos of people with no make up, street make up and stage make up, under stage lights. Go look at them if you’re at all unsure.! ! Sharing makeup tools is unhygienic: Either buy your own supplies or be sure the person !applying it uses clean brushes and sponges for each person.! !Make up steps! 1. Start with a clean face. Men: Shave!! 2. Ladies, either apply false eyelashes or curl your lashes. Men, plan on mascara later or eyeliner.! 3. Apply and let dry.! 4. Mascara:! !a. You can use your foundation to cover up any smudges, OR apply after foundation so it !!won’t get dusted with powder. For darker lashes - do both.! !b. Color: BLACK BLACK BLACK! !c. Gently remove the wand from the tube. Do not pump it! Pumping the wand pushes air !!into the tube and dries out the mascara. It also increases the ability of bacteria to !!grow. If you get a small clump at the tip of the wand, brush it gently on a tissue, ! !!not the edge of the tube - that causes larger clumps for the next use.! !d. Hold the brush horizontally for the upper lashes. Start at the base and wiggle it up to ! !!the tips to maximize separation and lushness. Allow the first coat to dry !! !!completely, then repeat.! !e. Hold the brush vertically for the lower lashes and sweep it lightly across them.! !f. If you want to lengthen your lashes, fluff on an extra dash of lengthening mascara just ! !!at the tips of the lashes.! 5. Foundation! !a. Select a foundation two shades darker than the skin on your face: Not the skin on ! !!!your inside wrist, which is what most drug store clerks will suggest. ! ! Foundations like Paladio, which can be found at the beauty supply store in town, give ! !!much better coverage for the stage than most drug store brands. If you’re ! !!planning to participate more than one year you may want to consider the !! !!investment. You can store it in your refrigerator, in a ziplock, until next year if ! !!!you’re not sharing with others.! ! b. Using a makeup sponge or your fingers, apply an even coat from below your jaw line ! !!up into the hairline (men - if your hairline is retreating go after it! Leaving a ! !!“perfect pate” uncovered will cause it to stand out even more than you think it ! !!does now.) Be careful not to leave lines around the edge of your face unless you !!!want to look like a mime.! !c. Cover your ears too!! !d. Foundation on your lips will increase the staying power of your lipstick.! 6. Blush! !a. Men: This includes you!! !b. If you have a loose powder and a powder blush, sweep your brush first through the ! !!loose powder, then through your powder blush. This will make blending the ! !!blush in much easier. If you’re using a sponge, apply with one side and blend ! !!with the other.! !c. Highlight the ‘hard places’ like bones. Start with your cheekbones: from the area ! !!below the edge of your iris (the ‘apple of your cheek) slightly up and out toward ! !!your hairline. You can also use the blush lightly down the center of your nose, on !!your chin and forehead.! ! d. Blend! Again, you don’t want obvious lines!! 7. Eyeshadow! !a. Using a shade 1-2 shades darker than your foundation, sweep shadow onto the lids, ! !!and just a bit higher (no higher than your brow bone!) to define your eyes and ! !!make them easier to see from the audience. Ladies, you can use your usual ! !!!techniques, but go a bit darker than usual.! 8. Eyeliner! !a. If using communal make up, be sure to use a clean brush! One per person.! !b. Upper lid: ! !!i. With a creamy pencil, liquid gel, pen or brush, use the tip of the brush or point ! !!for the finest line, getting right to the base of the lashes. Extend the line from the ! !!inner corner of your eye to the other. You may go slightly beyond the outer edge ! !!and up for a more dramatic look.! -OR-! !!ii. With a powdery pencil or crayon, begin either at the inner corner or at the outer !!third of your upper lid.! !c. Lower lids need only a light line, either corner to corner or the outer third, as close to ! !!!the lower lashes as possible. And never directly on the rim of the lid!! 9. Eyebrows! !a. Unless you have big, bushy black eyebrows that can be seen in a snow storm, you ! !!need to do this!! !b. Lightly stroke in the direction of growth with an eyebrow pencil one shade darker than ! !!!your actual brows. For more drama - go two shades darker.! 10. Powder! !a. If you used a liquid or mousse foundation, apply loose powder that matches your ! !!foundation to the entire face. Lightly. This will set your face. Some people ! !!prefer to use a non-aerosol hairspray: lightly, with your eyes closed! ! !b. If you used a powder foundation, like Paladio, you can skip the powder. If you’re ! !!going to be onstage a lot (like the lead character in a play), you may want to ! !!!consider the hairspray.! 11. Lipstick and Lipliner! !a. Choose a color close to the color of your lips for a natural appearance. One or two ! !!shades darker at most. Men should choose a creamy matte finish, ladies can go ! !!with a more glossy shade if they wish. Go bolder for more drama. “ Red” ! !!adds instant glamour in the audience’s eyes.! !a. For extra staying power, a small amount of foundation on the lips will keep your color ! !!on longer.! !b. is OPTIONAL.! !c. Your liner must match your lipstick or be neutral. If you use it, put it on first.! !d. Starting at the center of the upper lip, draw a line to the outer corner. You may follow ! !!the natural lip line, or create the shape you prefer - but in that case, stay close to ! !!your actual lip line…avoid clown lips!! !e. Use a creamy formula lipstick so your lips don’t dry out. Men should plan on a matte ! !!color to avoid looking like they’re wearing lipstick. (Adding a glossy finish is a ! !!great trick if you’re trying to look like you’re playing a female.)! !f. Use a clean lip brush if you’re sharing. One per person!! !g. A lip brush will give the most precise coverage. If it is your personal lipstick, you can ! !!skip the brush if you prefer.! !h. Stretch you lips lightly. Starting at the center of the top lip, brush out to the corners, ! !!following the lip line or your lip liner. Repeat with the bottom lip.! ! i. Blot on a tissue, reapply and blot again for longer-lasting color.! !Men’s Quick-Start Guide! 1. Shave First!! 2. Foundation! 3. Blush! 4. Eyeliner! !5. Lipstick! !Shopping List! 1.
