The Law Students’ Association is delighted that you will be joining our community this fall. We have no doubt that the upcoming school year will be a memorable one for you all. Notre programme d'orientation vise à faciliter votre transition vers votre nouvelle vie à la Faculté de droit de McGill. Cela dit, c'est un moment excitant! We can remember feeling some of the emotions you are feeling as you read this: anticipation, nervousness, accomplishment and confidence in the future. Take it all in, get to know one another and enjoy yourselves – this is such a unique moment in your law school careers! Until then, please visit our website, www.lsa-aed.ca, to learn more about the Faculty from the students’ perspective. À bientôt! Vincent-Pierre Fullerton President Law Students' Association / Association des étudiant(e)s en droit McGill Faculty of Law / Faculté de droit de McGill 3644 Peel, Montréal, Québec, H3A 1W9 http://www.lsa-aed.ca II - Un mot de bienvenue de votre Comité d’Orientation Bienvenue à LSA Orientation 2015: Barnyard Frosh! The Law Orientation Committee would first of all like to congratulate you for entering McGill Law. It is a huge accomplishment, one that you should feel very proud of. Indeed, people around you will say it; you’re good! And you sure are. But now that you are in, everybody around you is in the same position as you; a bit lost, somewhat uncertain of what is to come, and a bit scared. But don’t you worry, you are definitely not the only one, and, believe me, we all have gone through that. For this reason, the Orientation Committee wants to give you a warm welcome to the faculty of law and make you feel at home since, let’s face it, you will be spending the next 3 to 4 years of your life in the beautiful Law Faculty up the hill on Peel street. In other words, welcome 1Ls!! 3 Throughout the summer, the Orientation Committee has been working hard to make the beginning of your journey at McGill Law one that you will remember. From formal dinners, to an amazing nightlife, to cultural guided tours, this week will be packed with fun. We do it all for you because we know that your first year, though difficult, will be an amazing experience and we want to be part of it. The purpose of this handbook is therefore to get you excited about Orientation 2015 and about your first year of law. We have added a section that describes all the amazing events you will be attending and a section with useful tips and things to know that you should check out. The Committee really looks forward to meeting you on September 2nd when our ten-day journey begins and we hope that this handbook will encourage you to register for Orientation 2015 as it is going to be an unforgettable experience for everyone. So shine your boots, pick your favorite overalls and go register because the first day of Barnyard Frosh is getting close! 4 In the course of this most wonderful of weeks, you will not only explore the blissful pastures of our faculty, but you will also branch out into the fields of the open air pub, the trivia rodeo, the ponds of the pub-crawl, the yard picnics, and the much anticipated Bull's Ball. So we hope y'all come MOO-tivated to help your team claim the finest blue ribbons. Come prepared for some serious horsing around, and we can't wait to meet each and everyone of you! IV - How to Register Pre-Orientation To register for Law Orientation, you can do so online at https://www.tilt.com/tilts/mcgill-law- barnyard-frosh. You have to fill out a form with basic information and all the instructions are on the website. The Orientation wristband, which comes with a ticket to the Welcome Ball, admission to events, meals, free drinks, a t-shirt, and a welcome package, costs $70. If you have any questions or difficulties regarding Orientation Registration, email vp- [email protected]! Remember that SSMU Frosh is at the same time as Law Orientation, so if you choose to do non- Faculty froshes, such as SSMU Frosh, Outdoor Frosh, Fish Frosh, Residential Frosh, or Radical Frosh, you can’t do Law Orientation. You are welcome to do Discover McGill, but the Law Orientation will have very similar events. To register at another Frosh than the Law Faculty Frosh, go to: http://orientation.ssmu.mcgill.ca/ All the other events listed in the drop-down menu on the website, including Discover McGill, are intended for undergrad students – not Law students – so we recommend you only register for Law Orientation. We also encourage you to like our Facebook page- “McGill Law Frosh” (https://www.facebook.com/McGillLawFrosh) -so you can be updated with the latest Frosh News! We will be posting various things before and during Orientation Week. Don’t miss out. **If you do not have Facebook do not worry. We will hand you a printed schedule of the events and various other things** You should note that the information in this handbook, the accompanying calendar, and any subsequent updates from the LSA take precedence over the information on the SSMU website. 5 Votre première journée: Le mercredi 2 septembre *(For more detailed information on the events of the first day look at the Event Highlights section VII) On Wednesday September 2nd, you must confirm that you will be attending law school. This is an “in person” registration; meaning that you have to come to the faculty on this day, so don’t register for anything other than Law Orientation on September 2nd. 10h00 Registration Arrive at the Faculty (3644 Peel Street) and enter through the Library doors. Members of the LSA will greet you and direct you inside toward the Atrium where you will need to register at two different tables: (1) the Admissions table, where you will confirm your registration, and receive your Welcome Bag; (2) the LSA Orientation table, where you will receive your Orientation wristband, group name, and Orientation bag. If you register online for Orientation, you will go to the “Pre-Registered” Orientation table. If by the morning of the 2nd you have not registered online for Orientation but you still want to participate, you will go to the “Did Not Pre-Register” table. You can either bring $70 cash or cheque payable to McGill LSA/AED if you want to register in person on the 2nd, or you could register online with a computer we’ll have at our table. Once you’ve been to both the Admissions and LSA Orientation tables, meet and chat with your fellow classmates in the Atrium and then head to the Moot Court around 11:30 for the Dean’s Welcome. It is room 100 in New Chancellor Day Hall.
