Baseball History Though short, the baseball program at CSU Monterey Bay has had its own success. In the Otters’ inaugural season in 2006, the team finished 15-40 and laid the foundation of a winning tradition by beating national runner-up Chico State, western regional runner-up Cal State Los Angeles, and taking a weekend series from then 20th-ranked UC San Diego. The 2007 baseball team, in just its second year, made history when it defeated CSU Los Angeles, the top-ranked NCAA Division II school in the nation, 12-9. The team fininshed 19-33 last season and 11-25 in the California Collegiate Athletic Conference. Players Gerry Rommel and Brian Trump were both named to the All-CCAA teams. Rommel was also named to the National Collegiate Base- ball Writers’ Association Division II All-West Region Second Team. But this season, head coach Rich Aldrete, who has been the guiding force of the program since its inception, believes the team could finish above .500 --- quite a feat for a program in its third year. “I think we will be really good,” says Cal State Monterey Bay head baseball coach Rich Aldrete. “It took some programs 10 years for them to get above .500, - but we’re a lot closer than that.” Gerry Rommel With the completion of the new Baseball Complex one could possibly forget the Otter’s firstfield, Fort Ord field. While not as ground-breaking or innovative in its design, its history goes back as far as the 1950’s. Back then, competi- tion among the military sports teams was serious, going so far that base commanders would ‘draft’ players for their teams. In addition to serving their country in time of need, Willie Mays, Billy Martin, Del Crandall and Dave Kingman are among some major leaguers who played on the former Army Base field. won six straight CalPac titles, from national tour events such as the First 1998 to 2003. www.OtterAthletics.com 14 2008 Season Outlook

2008 Season Outlook Winning 6 out of their last 7 games to end the 2007 season, the 2008 CSUMB Baseball team welcomes 20 new players along with 18 returners to build upon their success and make a run for the CCAA playoffs in only the 3rd year of existence. Led by third year head coach Rich Aldrete, the Otters face one of the toughest schedules in the NCAA Division II, opening with games against nationally ranked California Collegiate Athletic Association teams UC San Diego, Chico State; Cal State Los Angeles, independent powerhouse Grand Canyon University and Great Northwest Athletic Conference power Western Oregon. The 2007 team built a stronger foundation of a winning tradition by the beating #1 Cal State Los Angeles during the regular season and winning two CCAA conference series against CSU Dominguez Hills and Cal Poly Pomona. Optimism runs high, “with the arms that we brought in and the bats we got through transfers, we should be very successful,” Aldrete said. “I think with our pitching, defense and timely hitting we can win a lot of ball games.”

Action at the Fall 2007 Intersquad Baseball World Series

Pitching Returnees/Newcomers: 7/9 Letter winners returning/lost: 7/9 Aldrete understands the importance of a strong, deep pitching staff with seven returning letter winners along with nine new pitchers. In 2008, the Otters will look to newcomers LHP Thomas Incaviglia who sat out the 2007 season and will anchor the staff, and RHP Patrick McClain, the only returning from the ‘07 squad who had an exceptional freshmen cam- paign. RHP Daniel Bifano who was an All-Star this summer in the Hawaii Collegiate Baseball League and newcomers RHP/LF Justin Aguliera and RHP Brian Callen all three hard throwing right-handers will see time as starters. RHP Addis O’Connor will see time as a spot starter and be the #1 reliever out of the bull- pen. Taking over the closer role will be RHP Adam Lanthier who had a great summer in Hawaii and is a hard thrower with a big league slider. Also seeing significant time this season will be LHP Luke Allendorf, LHP Greg Fisher, RHP Charlie Grosser, RHP Ron Duer, RHP Michael Trump and RHP Norman Hebert. Rounding out the staff are freshmen RHP Brett Preston and LHP Andrew Suarez. “I feel this is the strongest staff since I’ve been here. I have three possible draftees and guys that fill Thomas Incaviglia throws during a day of spring practice every role,” said Aldrete.

www.OtterAthletics.com 2008 Season Outlook 15

Catchers Returnees/Newcomers: 1/3 Letter winners returning/lost: 1/2 Behind the plate the Otters will have to replace one of the best hitters in the CCAA in Gerry Rommel. In 2007, Rom- mel was a first time All-CCAA member and a second team All-West Region member. There is a three way battle to re- place Rommel, returner Peter Estes will battle newcomers Robert Van Looy and Cody Guarnera. “All three bring something different to the table, Estes is a returner that knows the system; Van Looy is a catch and throw guy who hits from the left side and Guarnera has power from the right side of the plate” stated Aldrete. Peter Estes behind the plate in the 2007 season

Infielders Returnees/Newcomers: 2/6 Letter winners returning/lost: 2/5 2008 brings a whole new infield to the Peninsula as the Otters lost all four starters from the 2007 season. Taking over at first base will be Matt DeJesus, a very athletic player who can hit from the left side. At second there is a battle between returner Jayson Furia, and newcomer Jeff Ber- nacil. At shortstop newcomer Shea Davis will start with Bernacil and Dan Barras competing to seeing time there. Playing third will be either returner Jacob Flores; newcomer from the Uni- versity of Nevada Reno, Steve Mays or Bernacil. Rounding out the infield will be newcomer Nolan Labruchiere. “We are very athletic in the infield and I feel these core guys can win us ball games Dan Barras covers third base by the way they play,” said Aldrete.

Outfielders Returnees/Newcomers: 4/5 Letter winners returning/lost: 4/5 The Otter Outfield was hit hard by graduation, losing two year starters Gabe Chase and Nick Zaballos along with All-West Region player Brian Trump. Start- ing in center will be returner Justin Rios, who sat out last season due to injury, while the corner posts will be covered by Justin Aguilera and Thomas Incavi- glia when they are not on the mound. Also battling for time will be returners Brent Sargenti, Matt Ralls, Ryan Chagonjian and Andrew Knudsen along with newcomers Ray Guttereiz, Jeff Murray, An- drew DeGarmo and Andrew Marquardt. “With the new facility we needed speed and that’s what we got with Rios, Aguilera and Incaviglia and all the guys that can also see time can cover a lot of ground but a guy I feel that people need to watch is DeGarmo, a freshmen out of Oregon, I see big things for him in the future,” stated Aldrete. www.OtterAthletics.com 16 Head Coach Rich Aldrete Rich Aldrete Head Baseball Coach Rich Aldrete, whose college-coaching career began with the inaugural 2006 Cal State Monterey Bay baseball season, has a tremendous task ahead of him again this season.

The 2008 Otters are entering their first season as full members of the tough Division II California Collegiate Ath- letic Association, playing such national powers as Chico State, Sonoma State and UC San Diego -- to name a few. But expectations are high for this season considering Aldrete’s baseball background as both a coach and former player.

Aldrete, born and raised in Monterey, starred in football, basketball and baseball at Monterey High School before attending UC Berkeley on a baseball scholarship. At Cal, Aldrete joined an elite group of four-year letter winners under legendary coach Bob Milano.

After a stellar career at Cal, Rich enjoyed seven seasons of minor league baseball with the San Francisco Giants and St. Louis Cardinals, reaching as high as Triple A and winning five Divisional titles and a Double A championship with the Shreveport Captains, an affiliate of the San Francisco Giants. Aldrete was a lifetime .320 hitter in his minor league career, which helped him land a job to help build the independent baseball icon, the Northern League. Rich starred as a player/coach for the Sioux Falls Canaries while doubling as a special scout for the Florida Marlins. After two seasons in the Northern League, Rich helped start the Salinas Peppers, a member of the Western Baseball League where he became an All-Star. Once his pro career ended, Rich re-focused his commitment to giving back to the youth of the Tri-County area by starting the Aldrete Baseball Academy, a non-profit baseball school. There he not only tutored players on the field, but helped place over 75 local youths in college baseball programs in all divisions. He also served as an advisor to more than 10 lo- cal professional players. He stressed academics and family before athletics.

When past Athletic Director Bill Trumbo appointed Aldrete in May of 2005, Aldrete stated he wanted to build a program around quality students and men first -- baseball players second. The 2008 squad Aldrete and his staff brought in have fit the mold perfectly. A mix of junior college and high school players will keep the excitement of last season here in the Tri-County area.

Rich married his high school sweetheart, the former Stephanie Olaeta, and the two reside in Marina with his two kids: Annie, 10 and Carter, 8.

www.OtterAthletics.com 2008 Baseball Schedule 23

Home Games: 19 Road Games: 35 The Otters face one of the toughest schedules in the NCAA Division II, opening with games against nationally ranked California Collegiate Athletic Association teams UC San Diego, Chico State; Cal State Los Angeles, independent powerhouse Grand Canyon University and Great Northwest Athletic Conference power Western Oregon. “Our schedule is just as tough as the last two years. In 2006 we had the #1 strength of schedule in the nation (according to Boyd’s World) and we followed with the 11th strongest in ’07. It doesn’t get any easier for us with our conference rated as one of the best and a non-conference schedule against teams from the GNAC and independent Grand Canyon. We also were able to schedule two Division I teams with St. Mary’s and Nevada Reno,” said Aldrete.

This 10,000 square foot gymnasium is used for athletics games, intramural sports pro- grams, and recreational use. Renova- tion of the facility (originally called the Wellness Activity Center until 2001) was completed in 1998 and included the addition of the sports medicine offices, expansion of the men’s and women’s locker rooms and the addi- tion of coaches office space.

Renovation plans, beginning in the Spring of 2008, include installa- tion of a new floor, bleachers, and redesigned basketball standards. In January, state of the art Daktronics Scoreboards were installed as the first phase of the renovation plans. Otter Sports Center

About the Otter Backers Become an Otter Backer The primary purpose of the Otter Backers is to generate financial support and interest for a comprehensive athletic program consis- tent with other nationally prominent programs. The Otter Backers recognize the value of a successful athletic program to California State University Monterey Bay, its alumni, and friends. The CSUMB athletic department is dedicated to continuing its tradition of excellence in providing student-athletes with the opportunity to excel in both academics and athletics. Otter Backer funds are used primarily to provide athletic scholarships for twelve men and women’s varsity sports. The cost of providing these academic and ath- letic programs has increased dramatically over the past few years. Otter Backer Operation The Otter Backer membership drive is held annually in early spring; however, memberships are accepted throughout the year (July 1st through June 30th of the following year). Pledges may be fulfilled when made, or, if the donor prefers, quarterly or semi-annu- ally. California State University, Monterey Bay employees may also use the convenient payroll deduction for their contribution. The Otter Backers offer its members a pleasant social calendar. A variety of events are offered including post game receptions, an annual golf outing, luncheons with coaches, and other events throughout the year. A small portion of membership contributions is applied toward normal operating expenses of the Foundation to cover necessary costs such as postage, printing, supplies and booster benefits. Membership is open to anyone interested in helping athletes who participate in one or more of the twelve intercollegiate sports at CSUMB. Why Should I Join? By joining the Otter Backer Foundation, you are providing an opportunity for many young men and women to continue their pursuit of athletic and academic excellence. As a donor, you will receive membership benefits and the personal satisfaction of becoming a special part of our “team behind the teams”. For more information please visit us online at: csumb.edu/otterbackers

www.OtterAthletics.com Giving to the Otter Backers 31 Cash Gifts – Provide immediate help to the program. Contributions may be given in any amount and payments can be made in full or in installments. The most popular way of giving is through an unrestricted cash contribution, which grants the athletic department the discretion to use the money where it is needed most, for athletic scholarships. Membership in one of our levels qualifies the donor for athletic related benefits. Donor benefit (all sports pass, team trip, etc.) obviously increases as the size of the donor’s annual gift increases. Otter Back Foundation members have the ability to select their method and time of payment. Matching Gifts – Many companies offer matching gift programs for contributions by their employees. This is an excellent way to double or triple the size of your gift and increases your benefit level. Check with your company’s benefits department for matching gift information and the proper forms to include with your contribution. Planned Gifts – Tax law advantages make gifts of real estate, bequest or memorials, securities, stocks, and life insurance programs a popular and con- venient way to make a substantial contribution to the Otter Backer Foundation. We welcome the opportunity to discuss these options with you. Endowment Gifts – A named scholarship fund is a meaningful and appropriate way to honor a friend, family member or mentor. Endowed scholar- ships can be designed for a particular sport or position. Endowment gifts provide perpetual scholarship support for student-athletes. Donors can be involved in choosing the criteria and naming the scholarship fund. For more information on the endowment program, contact the Otter Backer Foundation at (831) 582-3113. Gifts in Kind – Donating needed goods and services are another way to build the strength of CSUMB athletic programs. Donations of items that normally would have to be purchased produce a savings to the overall athletics budget. Printing services, office supplies, travel services, lodging, catering, and courtesy cars are among the current needs. Tax Advantages – Tax law encourage contributions to higher education, including athletic scholarship funds. California Collegiate Athletic Association 35

CCAA Corporate Partners

First Competition ~ 1939 Headquarters ~ Walnut Creek Membership Total ~ 11 Classification ~ NCAA Division II Commissioner ~ Robert J. Hiegert NCAA Championships ~ 145 all-time The California Collegiate Athletic Association has been the nation’s most suc- cessful intercollegiate athletic conference since its establishment in 1938.

The 11-member league is home to some of the nation’s finest NCAA Division II athletic programs in Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State L.A., Cal State San Bernardino, Cal State Stanislaus, Chico State, Cal State Monterey Bay, Humboldt State, UC San Diego, San Francisco State, and Sonoma State. Cal State Bakersfield ended its long stint as a member of the conference this past year after reclassifying to Division I.

CCAA institutions compete in seven women’s and six men’s conference-spon- sored sports. Fall sports include men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball. Men’s and women’s basketball are contested in the winter, and women’s , men’s golf, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, softball and baseball comprise spring competition.

CCAA members have won 145 NCAA Championships (98 men, 47 women) all time, far and away the most of any Division II conference. On the men’s side, CCAA members have brought home at least 10 titles in swimming & diving (25), wrestling (16), track & field (13), tennis (11), and baseball (10).

CCAA institutions have been very successful in the history of NCAA women’s athletics, having won 10 cross country, eight softball, six track & field, five volleyball, and five basketball national championships as well as 13 more in four other sports.

The CCAA has undergone several changes in conference membership since charter members UC Santa Barbara, Fresno State, San Diego State and San Jose State came together to form the league in 1938. Over the past 60 years, a number of institutions have been members of the CCAA, including Cal State Northridge, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Chapman, Cal State Ful- lerton, Long Beach State, Pacific, Pepperdine, UC Riverside, UC Davis, Cal State Bakersfield, and Grand Canyon University.

The CCAA Commissioner’s Office relocated from southern California to the San Francisco Bay-area suburb of Walnut Creek in July 1998. Robert J. Hieg- ert is in his 11th year as the Commissioner. www.OtterAthletics.com 36 CCAA Members
