Giya Kancheli's music has been a highlight of our New Music Fes vals. Dixi, for mixed chorus and orchestra has been described as "Carmina Burana as re-imagined by Arvo Pärt." The hushed string pianissimos that emerge from the reverbera on of the tumultuous percussion for ssimos and the so choral lines are hallmarks of Kancheli's evoca ve style. Called "one of the most original musical thinkers of the new century" (Alex Ross, The New Yorker), John Luther Adams is a composer whose life and work are deeply rooted in the natural world.

All will be on display at this first WSO performance with Canadian violinist Nikki Chooi.

The Poetry is in the Pity...All a poet can do today is warn," the tle page shows in poet Wilfred Owens's words, on which the work is portrayed. Owens was killed during the last days of World War I.
