I just saw this tip and thought it might be helpful to other guild members who free motion quilt on domestic sewing machines with little harp space. I haven't tried it yet, but it seems like it should work.

"Just turn your machine on a 90 degree angle so you are facing the narrow part of the machine head on. You'll have unlimited space for your fabric!"

I have seen it mentioned on a few blogs, but have no idea where it originated. I realize that you'd still have no more space when working from the center of the quilt, but it might be easier to handle the bulk when it's moving from side to side and not resting in your lap and off the back of your sewing table. Also, it might be necessary to remove some drop-in machines from their cabinets, depending on their configuration and available work space, to work with them at a 90 degree angle--in some cases, you could just turn the cabinet.

Colin’s Potato Puff (Sandi’s own Recipe)

4c mashed potatoes w/salt & pepper to taste 1-8oz pkg cream cheese 1 egg 1/4 c minced onion Maybe a little butter or milk if you wish Grated Cheddar as a topping for color if you wish Mix all together. Top with a little grated cheddar. Bake at 350º, covered, for 30 minutes. Can be made ahead (which is the beauty of this recipe).

Now, this is what I do: I rice the potatoes to get the skins incorporated. Then I quadruple the recipe (when I do so, I use 3 8oz packages of cream cheese with 3 eggs and 3/4c minced onion). Seems weird, but that minced onion gives the potatoes a sweet flavor. Colin gets a huge casserole, and they keep all their leftovers to warm later. Plus we get a smaller casserole to add to a meal I fix later.

What’s GREAT about these potatoes is that you can fix them ahead of time and refrigerate until dinner or freeze for a later date. If they’ve been refrigerated, bake for about 45min. If frozen, bake a good hour. Optional Blocks

The Purple Braid Block will be collected in February 2015 because If you would like to participate in The Purple Braid Block please contact Jeanette Oesterly at 314.968.8477 or [email protected].

Anne Hennig kindly provided photos of her purple braid blocks. She says that if she doesn’t win, she’ll provide the winner with a bag of strips and purple fabric that was left over. This is a GREAT picture of Colin, Jake, and their hero, T.J. Oshie, of the St. Louis Blues, when T.J. came to visit Colin at their home a few weeks after his surgery (end of June). Colin had hair then. Oshie brought Colin one of his jerseys and a stick from Sochi, Russia, both of which he signed. I’m very proud of Jake and how he cares for his brother. He’s a sweet, good 13-year-old.
