The Philadelphia Orchestra Returns to Beloved Summer Homes for Summer 2018 Season

(Philadelphia, May 30, 2018)—The Philadelphia Orchestra celebrates the summer season by bringing “the Philadelphia Sound” to audiences near and far with return visits to three cherished summer homes plus a Free Neighborhood Chamber Concert in Philadelphia. The Orchestra returns to the Bravo! Vail Music Festival, the Mann Center for the Performing Arts, and the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC), with 25 varied performances of classical favorites and popular programming featuring a host of incredible guest conductors and soloists, concerts led by Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin, and, of course, the Fabulous Philadelphians. Musicians of the Orchestra will also perform a free chamber concert in Philadelphia’s Penn Treaty Park to conclude the 2017-18 Free Neighborhood Chamber Concert Series.
Bravo! Vail Music Festival The Orchestra will give six concerts as part of the 31st annual Bravo! Vail Music Festival, led by Principal Guest Conductor Stéphane Denève, David Newman, and Donald Runnicles. Denève leads the Orchestra in three programs of classics. He will be joined by violinist Nikolaj Znaider (July 6), and pianists Nicholas Angelich (July 7) and Jean-Yves Thibaudet (July 8). David Newman leads a fan favorite: John Williams’s complete score to Raiders of the Lost Ark performed alongside the film (July 11). Donald Runnicles leads two programs to close out the Orchestra’s time in the Rocky Mountains, joined by violinist Augustin Hadelich (July 13) and pianist Daniil Trifonov (July 14).
Mann Center for the Performing Arts The Orchestra’s storied history at the Mann Center for the Performing Arts continues with six concerts that offer something for everyone. Assistant Conductor Kensho Watanabe kicks things off with an all- Tchaikovsky program featuring cellist Zachary Mowitz in his Philadelphia Orchestra debut, soprano Elena Perroni, and fireworks (July 17)! Watanabe leads a second program, “Bernstein: Broadway & Beyond” as part of the Mann’s signature festival celebrating the 100th birthday of Leonard Bernstein, featuring some of the composer’s most treasured selections from On the Town and Candide, plus the world premiere of South Side, Symphonic Dances by American composer Darin Atwater––a work based on the eternal tale in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and Bernstein's romantic musical update West Side Story (July 18).
Two evenings of film music bring to life Star Wars: A New Hope™ In Concert (led by Constantine Kitsopoulos, July 20) and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban™ (led by Steven Reineke, July 26). Plus, the Mann and The Philadelphia Orchestra will hold a special performance in celebration of the Philadelphia Eagles’ championship season. Conducted by Aram Demirjian and hosted by the “Voice of the Eagles,” Merrill Reese, audiences can relive NFL Films’ video highlights of the Eagles’ championship season alongside live, inspiring music performed by the Orchestra (July 24). André Raphel closes out the Orchestra’s season at the Mann with “A Night of Gershwin” featuring such favorites as the Piano Concerto in F with soloist Micah McLaurin and An American in Paris (July 27).
Free Neighborhood Chamber Concert The Philadelphia Orchestra closes out its 2017-18 Free Neighborhood Chamber Concerts with the largest event of the series. Following successful performances at the Museum of the American Revolution, Second Mt. Zion Baptist Church, and Historic Strawberry Mansion, the Orchestra brings a brass choir and percussion to Penn Treaty Park in Fishtown on Saturday, July 21 along with family-friendly activities, food trucks, and more! This concert series, generously supported by the William Penn Foundation’s New Audiences/New Places grant, supports The Philadelphia Orchestra’s ongoing work to reach deeper into the communities of Philadelphia by expanding its presence in new neighborhoods and venues.
Saratoga Performing Arts Center The Philadelphia Orchestra will explore the multidisciplinary boundaries of music for 12 performances at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC). Stéphane Denève leads a program that showcases music and movement featuring dancers from The Pennsylvania Ballet (August 1) and a program featuring music inspired by Shakespeare (August 2). Kensho Watanabe conducts Holst’s The Planets featuring images from NASA (August 3). Music with film returns to SPAC with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone™ (led by Justin Freer, August 4) and Star Wars: A New Hope™ In Concert (led by Constantine Kitsopoulos, August 11).
Yannick Nézet-Séguin joins the Orchestra for the final two weeks of concerts to lead Mozart’s Concerto for Two Pianos (August 8), a family-friendly matinee featuring Saint-Saëns Carnival of the Animals (August 9), an all-Bernstein program (August 10), Strauss’s Don Juan (August 15), a program featuring Philadelphia Orchestra Concertmaster David Kim and Principal Viola Choong-Jin Chang as soloists (August 16), and Joshua Bell in Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 (August 17). The Orchestra’s summer season concludes with a performance of John Corigliano’s soundtrack to The Red Violin with Joshua Bell, alongside the film (led by Michael Stern, August 18). ______

Carnival of the Animals is a humorous musical suite of 14 movements by the French Romantic composer Camille Saint-Saëns.
