Our next stop is the studio of Zoe Tweedale, a young painter whose works of animals in odd locations are delightful. Saturday March 13 Newcastle Art and Artists Newcastle has substantially changed from the days when it was one of Australia’s largest industrial centres. These changes are seen across the city, which provides easy access to quiet city beaches and to its hinterland in the Hunter Valley. But the former industrial spaces of the city have also become a haven for artists. This morning, we visit the Newcastle Regional Gallery, which has two excellent exhibitions: one of Bill Henson and another, VOID, which brings together the work of contemporary Indigenous artists from around Australia. We also visit Richard Tipping in his studio; Richard’s art focuses on the interaction between words and images and his art ranges from poetry to LED installations, large scale street signage. After a picnic lunch by the beach, we visit the studio of Virginia Cuppaidge, an associate of Clement Meadmore whose works are held in major galleries in Australia and the USA, where she lived for 30 years. Our final visit is to the Creator Incubator, a repurposed warehouse complex that contains 34 artist studios in addition to Braddon’s. In the late afternoon, we return to Sydney, arriving in the early evening. (B, L)
