Its subjects are usually romantic; especially prevalent are tales of heartbreak. The music is in 4/4 timing and is influenced by rumba and Son, while remaining of distinctive sound. Derived from the Latin American tradition of guitar music, Bachata emerged in the 1960s. While popular radio filled the airwaves with merengue and salsa, Bachata musicians were forced to develop their own system of producing and distributing their music. Juan Luis Guerra won a Grammy in 1992 for his album Bachata Rosa allowing Bachata to gain legitimacy and international recognition. In 2004, the Dominican group Aventura was probably the best known Bachata group worldwide, with its single "Obsession" having dominated for a long time radio play both in major US Latino markets, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic. Other artists of note include Anthony Santos, Raulin Rodriguez, Zacarias Ferrera, and Joe Veras, just to mention a few of the currently most popular. How to Dance Bachata The basics to the dance are three steps with a Latin hip motion, followed by a tap or including a hip movement on the 4th beat. Generally, most of the movement is in the lower body up to the hips, and the upper body moves much less. In partnering, the lead can decide whether to perform in open or closed position. Dance moves, or step variety, during performance strongly depends on the music (such as the rhythms played by the different instruments), setting, mood, and interpretation. Unlike Salsa, Bachata does not usually include complex turn patterns but they are used more and more as the dance evolves. The Musicality The original dance style from the Dominican Republic is a basic dance sequence in a full 8 count moving within a square. Bachata music has an accent in rhythm at every fourth count. Often, this is when dancers will tap-step & pop their hips, this is called dancing Bachata to the basic rhythm of the music (because the first step after the pop falls on the 1st beat of the measure). But Bachata can be danced to different timings as well if it's 3 2013 ZUMBA INSTRUCTOR CONVENTION – BACHATA EXTREME danced to one particular instrument instead. The tab or 'pop' is done in the opposite direction of the last step, while the next step is taken on the same direction as the tap or pop. In this super charged session you will learn the basic steps and basic history of Bachata and other denomination of the rhythm and mixes. Traditional Bachata The basic steps of this pattern move side to side, changing direction after every tap. Characteristics of this style is the close connection between partners, soft hip movements, tap with a small "pop" of the hip on the 4th step (1, 2, 3, Tap/Hip) and does not include many Turns/Figures Traditional Style is the most common way of dancing Bachata. This style of Bachata is very simple and with a 4/4 music the steps go 4 steps to the left and 4 steps to the right. On the 4th step, there is a hip movement or tap, main characteristic of this style. Bachata Romantica (Romantic Bachata) I the Slow, Sexy, Sensual Bachata style with lots of passion, body connection and hip movements. Bachata Moderna (Bachata Modern) was developed probably from around 2005 on the 'Traditional' Style base. The basics are the same as Traditional Bachata, but with added dance elements and styling from Salsa, Tango, Zouk-lambada, Ballroom etc. In this style, couples typically move their upper body more, put greater emphasis on the hip pop, and women use more exaggerated hip movements Is based on the concept of the crosses, where on each count you lead to a cross (cross on1, cross on2, cross on3, cross over), but on the 4th count you keep the hip movement of the Traditional Style Bachata. Bachata Moderna includes different variations as “Bachatango” and “Urban Bachata Bachata Fusion a new style that is incorporating the fundamentals from other styles as well (Salsa, Merengue, Reggeaton, Bolero, Tango and more) Bachatango/Bachata Tango. A fusion Style from the West with short sequences of Traditional basic steps and then added different Tango steps danced like Tango. The “pop” count is used to add elaborated sensuality and varied Latin dance styles and also include the characteristic kicks from Tango 4 2013 ZUMBA INSTRUCTOR CONVENTION – BACHATA EXTREME 2013 ZUMBA INSTRUCTOR CONVENTION Application of the Zumba® Formula Bachata Choreo Notes Song Part ZJ Choreography Notes Reps ZIN™ Member Notes Part A Single-Single and Bachata Basic to the side X4 Bachata Basic Side to Side (X8) X8 Part B Bachata Basic Front & Back (X8) X8 Step out & cha-cha-cha X4 Part C X2 Double Cha-cha-cha 4 quick step going back X2 Part A Single-Single and Bachata Basic to the side X4 Part B Bachata Basic Side to Side (X8) X8 Step out & cha-cha-cha X4 Part C X2 Double Cha-cha-cha 4 quick step going back X2 Part D Diagonal Back Cha-Cha-Cha X8 Cross Over Cha-Cha-Cha X2 Part E X4.5 Step out (L) cha-cha-cha Step out (R) cha-cha-cha Step out (L) cha-cha-cha Step out (R) cha-cha-cha Yo Si Me Enamoré (Bachata) Mega Mix 33 5 2013 ZUMBA INSTRUCTOR CONVENTION – BACHATA EXTREME 2013 ZUMBA INSTRUCTOR CONVENTION Application of the Zumba® Formula Bachata Choreo Notes Song Choreography Notes Reps ZIN™ Member Notes Part Slide out and face side of the room, with wide foot Intro stance hit shoulders 4 times front-back-front-back; 0:00 – 0:15 X4 (repeat combo) Verse A Two 1⁄4 of a turn with round leg work to; repeat the 0:16 – 0:37 combo X6 Verse B 3 Step cross over in front than 2 leg hop and twist with 0:38 – 0:59 hips X6 (Part 1) 2 Diagonal Bachata basic, 2 half tempo back step back & 4 quick step (X3) Chorus 1:00 – 1:38 X1 (Part 2) Toe Tap out and Step in (X6) then wiggle hips going down & then up (Part 1) Romantic Bachata 1,2,3 down 4 with the hip Musical up (X8) 1:39 – 2:07 X8 (Part 2) Romantic Bachata 1,2,3 Step out 4 Feet together (X8) X8 Verse B 3 Step cross over in front than 2 leg hop and twist with 2:08 – 2:51 hips X12 (Part 1) 2 Diagonal Bachata basic, 2 half tempo back Chorus step back & 4 quick step (X3) 2:51 – 4:05 X2 (Part 2) Toe Tap out and Step in (X6) then wiggle hips going down & then up 6 2013 ZUMBA INSTRUCTOR CONVENTION – BACHATA EXTREME Slide out and face side of the room, with wide foot Intro stance hit shoulders 4 times front-back-front-back; 4:05 – 4:21 X4 (repeat combo) Me Puedo Matar by Bachata Heights Song Part Choreography Notes Reps ZIN™ Member Notes INTRO TANGO 1 Tango cross leg 3X 0:00 to 0:15 3 steps to the back starting with your R leg, then L leg cross in front 2 times. 3 steps to the front with your L leg, then R leg cross in the back 2 times. CECILIA NOCILLI Universidad de Granada Beyond Dance: Analysis, Historiography, and Redefinitions The anthology Transatlantic Malagueñas and Zapateados in Music, Song and Dance: Spaniards, Natives, Africans, Roma opens with a suggestive image of Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn in La Malagueña of 1921, which synthesizes the identity of the publication: an exploration of the transatlantic journeys of Spanish dance and its exotic fascination. The image thus manifests the opposition between the maja and the manolo (tough girl and tough guy), as between the Andalusian woman and the bullfighter. In their introduction, Meira Goldberg, Walter Aaron Clark and Antoni Pizà highlight the relationship between this anthology and an earlier volume on the fandango as a clearly mestizo, or hybridized, dance form blending African, European, and American influences: The Global Reach of the Fandango in Music, Song and Dance: Spaniards, Indians, Africans and Gypsies (Música Oral del Sur vol.

  • Session Handout Salsa & Merengue Mash Up
SESSION HANDOUT SALSA & MERENGUE MASH UP Walter Diaz (WALLY) ZIN™ Member, USA SESSION HANDOUT Presenter Walter Diaz (Wally) Schedule 50 min: Theoretical explanation about all these fantastic rhythms and their influences. 70 min: Master Class, including the Warm Up and Cool Down. (Total: 2 hours) Session Objective The session will give ZIN Members valuable information and knowledge about Salsa and Merengue, thus providing participants with the tools to easily identify these rhythms and put them into practice. History & Background HISTORY OF MERENGUE Merengue is a style of music and dance originated in the Caribbean, specifically in the Dominican Republic in the early nineteenth century. Originally, the Merengue was interpreted with stringed instruments (guitars). Years later, the guitars were replaced by the Accordion along with the Guira and the Tambora (drum of two patches), the structure of the whole instrumental típico. This set, with three instruments, represents the synthesis of three cultures that shaped the flavor of the Dominican culture. European influence is represented by the Accordion, the African by the Tambora (drum of two patches), and the aboriginal by the Taino or Güira. Although in some areas of the Dominican Republic, especially in the Cibao, there are still typical sets, this has evolved throughout the twentieth century with the introduction of new instruments like the saxophone and later with the appearance of bands with complex wind sections. The origin of the word merengue goes back to colonial times and comes from the word Muserengue, the name given to dances among some African cultures. The Dominican Merengue genre has played a major role within the environment of Afro Caribbean.
