KAMLOOPS CHAPTER RECEIVES Exceptional Heritage Achievement Award from Kamloops Heritage Commission

1

Exceptional Heritage Achievement Award Each year the City of Kamloops Heritage Commission acknowledges a house and a commercial building along with an exceptional Achievement Award which was awarded to our Chapter this year. President Bob Giesleman accepted it on behalf of the Chapter. This award is created by a local artist in the shape of one of the stain glass windows of the heritage church down town. Twelve club members were in attendance for the presentation. Our Chapter was recognized for our past display in the city museum and the restoring of a city owned fire truck and now restoring the cities ambulance plus holding the Easter Parade for 42 consecutive years. We were also thanked for all the support we have provided for other city functions over the years.

Copy of Comments from Editor of the “Car Club Times” South Okanagan Chapters Newsletter: - I need your help. After 7 years of being your newsletter editor, my “idea tank” is running on empty. Then a “aha” moment hit --- I counted up our membership list --- 41 families. I do 8 newsletters a year – Do the math. If every family sent me one story a year, we would have 5 unique articles in each newsletter. Places you’ve been, interesting places to explore. So when you’re doing your spring sorting, or reminiscing at the backyard bar-b-que, jot down a quick note and send it along to me, Ila Sherwin, I hope you keep these comments in mind when it comes to the “Kamshaft” If anyone gets pictures of club events this year I could use them.

Those going to the May Tour at Nanaimo are asked to contact Bob Gieselman so arrangements can be made for the 2013 May Tour registration team and discuss various travel plans.

I urge all members to get your vehicle ready for our first big event of the season. The feature marque this year will be “MG” leading the procession. There will be the usual Pancake Breakfast at Westsyde Centennial Park from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM Sunday April 8th and the parade will start at 1:00 PM from the Westsyde Shopping Center. Assistance will be needed with the tech check, parking control, coffee & cookie sales, etc. If ladies could bring cookies or goodies to sell it would be appreciated. It would be nice to see the members dress Vintage. If you don’t have Vintage please at least wear an Easter Bonnet. That includes the guys such as a boler, straw or felt hat. This all helps to make the day. A help list will be passed around at the March meeting. If you can help please contact me at 250 573-5740 or [email protected] Thanks, “The Big Easter Bunny” Dick PS: We are still in need of an Easter Bunny for the parade.

Sorry to announce the passing of Les Batchelor. Age 76 Les was a VCCC member for 24 years and our Chapter president 1994 & 1997. He and Esme decided to move to Victoria to be closer to family. It was through Les’s hard work and determination that we had our display in the Kamloops Museum. It was also his idea for our club to have the memorial plaque for deceased members. When Les was working he was a mechanic instructor at Caribou College {now TRU}. I understand he was one of the best. Les restored a number of cars. His nicest was a blue 1928 Plymouth which he sold to a gentleman from Germany. Even though they had moved to Victoria Les did stay in contact with a number of our members and asking about the Chapter. I am sure Esme will miss him very much as they were very close. Wishing Esme all the best as I understand that she is not in the best of health herself.

Also announcing the passing of Sid Cope Age 68 Sid was a member of our Chapter for 8 years. As he worked at the airport he arranged for us on a Cruise Night to visit the hanger and get the details on the Medevac system that is here in Kamloops. We had opportunity to check out the plane and helicopter they use. On the night of our visit we saw the operation first hand as the Medevac team from Vancouver flew into Kamloops and then transferred to the helicopter for a trip to Lillooet to get a baby that had to be taken to BC’s Children’s hospital in Vancouver.

IN LOVING MEMORY OF WOLF OBIEGLO MAY 1/54 TO MARCH 16/11

I purchased this 1964 Pontiac Parisienne in Vancouver, BC in September of 1974 after graduation from High School for the total sum of $1,000.00 with only 3,500 miles on the odometer. I am the second owner and I have documentation from the original owner as well as all the operational and repair manuals. With the help on my Father, I took out my first loan with payments of $98.00 per month for a year. The car came stock with a 283 V8 and automatic 2 speed transmission. My husband and I met and had our first date in the car in Vancouver by the Fraser River in 1976. We married in 1979 and have two wonderful sons. After many years of faithful service the car was retired and spent many years in barns, under tarps and in garages. With the kids grown and out on their own, we had the time and money to rebuild the car and it was finally completed in September 2005. We traveled over 5000 miles to Las Vegas and back in September of 2005. We renewed our wedding vows in a drive through ceremony in Vegas on September 13, 2005 after 26 years of marriage. It was great trip and we had a wonderful and memorable time. In early July 2007, we traveled to Regina, Saskatchewan to see our oldest son graduate from the RCMP. It was a fantastic trip with the top down all the way, the car handled the Rocky Mountains better than some of the new cars we saw at the side of the road. In 2008 we completed our dream trip of crossing Canada from Coast to Coast. We were on the road for 48 days returning via the USA. After 32 years of marriage, I am now cruising in the convertible on my own as my best friend and soul mate passed on to the great highway of heaven but he is still riding with me always. There is nothing like seeing the world with the rag top down. Check out my website at her64.com  Carolyn Obieglo

Mark your calendars now so you don’t miss out as it is the only event that we have left to raise funds to run the club on.

MEMBERSHIP PROFILE: - Virgil Lysgaard Virgil was born in Macklin, Sask. and grew up on a couple of farms [Evesham, Sask & Kinsella, AB] until moving to live with an aunt and uncle in Vancouver to finish his schooling. He started Mechanical Engineering at UBC and then switched over to take his Machinist Apprenticeship at V.M. Dafore Machine shop next to Rogers Sugar Refinery. 1966 Virgil bought a very big old house at 1750 William St. for $17,000. One day while driving down Kingsway in his 1948 convertible {which was needing work} he saw this gorgeous 1956 Eldorado for sale $1,400. It was a lot of money when you are only making $1.25 per hour. They did not want the Packard in trade however a deal was made. He never did see it again. Not sure if someone got it or it went for scrap. In 1974 he bought Brennan’s Garage and moved to Erikson, BC {just outside of Creston}. {I know the Brennan’s had 3 daughters, & there is nothing more has to be said} They changed the location of the Crow’s Nest Pass, {Highway #3} away from the front of his garage so the business did not do as well as expected. In 1978 Virgil came to Kamloops to fill in for one month while the machinist at Mancini Steel went on a month’s holiday. He stayed on working there until retirement in 2005. 1979 he was building a house at Cherry Creek while living in the basement however, with the spiraling mortgage rates he was forced to sell it and in 1981 he purchased the property at Pinantan Lake. Where he lived until he moved into town in 1995. While living up in Pinantan Lake he arranged that one stop during our Annual Fall Garage Tour would be up at his place as he needed some extra hands to help him relocate a shed on his property. In appreciation of our help he made up a batch of Chili. While making it he could not taste the chili flavour so he kept adding more powder. Well by the time the chili powder took hold it did not matter what the weather was like we were definitely warm. You might go as far as to say Hot! Those types of Tours you remember. Virgil originally joined the Vintage Car Club in Vancouver in 1974 however he did drop his membership for awhile until his moving to Kamloops when he rejoined. He said this was a good move on his part as he met new and different people other than those that he worked with. Virgil was Kamloops Chapter President 1991 and the club roster shows him as belonging to the Vintage Car for 27 years.

Virgil listed some of the cars that he has owned over the years including 11 Packard’s, 9 Cadillac’s and another dozen or so of mixed breeds. He is currently working on what he says will be his last restoration. It is a 1954 Packard Pacific. I asked why he picked Packard’s and he said that he saw a poster in 1956 with a Packard on it and it was such a beautiful car he decided then that some day he wanted own one. Over the last couple of years you might have see Virgil diving and enjoying his 1924 Model T that he has mechanically restored leaving the body as you might refer to as a “Barn Find.” Thanks to Virgil for his help with the Ambulance restoration using his skills as a machinist to make some parts that would have been impossible to find. If you ever get a chance to talk with Virgil I suggest that you do so as you will find him very interesting and a wealth of knowledge.  Editor

Original 1950 Chevrolet [Only 437 miles]

You'll LOVE this one. What got me was the seat covers... Remember??? Well you youngsters won't, but us oldsters will, betcha!!! The oil filter is the blue can with yellow top, you could stick a roll of toilet paper in there. The air filter is the oil bath type, the bottom portion is filled with oil and when you cleaned it you replaced the oil and clean the sump and mesh wire filter. This is awesome! 1950 Chevrolet Club Coupe, 437 original miles, only three owners. Check out the dealer installed "oil filter", the rusty carb, and you can even see the spark plugs if they need to be changed.

Purchased new by Mr. And Mrs. Jessie Trueblood of Modesto, CA. Shortly after purchasing this car, Mr. Trueblood took a day off to go fishing. While waiting for the "big one" to bite he witnessed a woman fall out of her boat. Mr. Trueblood jumped in to help, only to fall victim of a fatal heart attack. Mrs. Trueblood returned the car home and placed it in the garage for the next 12 years. The odometer reading at that time (1962) was 413 miles.

Mrs. Trueblood lived next door to a used car lot owned by Mr.William E. Wilson (now 81 years old). Mr. Wilson spoke with her frequently and often told her he would like to buy the car for himself to keep. In 1962 the time had come. Mrs. Trueblood told Mr. Wilson she needed a car for her bookkeeper who didn't really care for the old Chevy and would prefer a Rambler. No problem - Mr. Wilson went down to the local Rambler dealer and bought a brand new one for $1,650.00 ($100.00 over cost) and made the swap.

He then took the Chevy home and parked it with 433 actual miles. And there it sat for the next 45 years, occasionally being started and moved in and out of the garage. In 2007 Mr. Wilson decided to sell the car and started spreading the word around Modesto that the old Chevy, with 433 miles on it, was for sale. Many had heard about the car, but hardly anyone had ever laid eyes on it. In fact, according to Mr. Wilson, he only showed the car to about five people in 45 years. Word spread quickly about the car and soon a buyer arrived ready and willing to pay the $60,000 asking price. When Mr. Wilson told the story of this car he complained heavily of the "capital gains" tax he was required to pay and wished he had never sold it. As of this writing, Mr. Wilson is still alive and well in Modesto and can verify the miles and originality of this car. Simply put, this is a true 100% factory original survivor (that includes the air in the tires). This old Chevy now has 437 original miles and is most likely the world's lowest mileage 1950 Chevy.  End of Story
