The catchmeut visiou may not be something that cau be achieved iu the next five years, but something we can all work towards. Whilst the Cherwell Catchment lies largely within Oxfordshire it also encroaches into Buckinghamshire to the east and Warwickshire and Northamptonshire to the north. From its source at Charwelton to the Thames confluence, the river generally flows north to south and over a length of about 96 bn falls 100 metres, draining an area o f over 900 Ian2. Agriculture is the main land use in the catchment and has influenced the character of its countryside and landscape. The contribution made by the River Cherwell to the character of Oxfordshire in particular is recognised by several policies in the Structure Plan which seek to protect and enhance its natural features. -

Mortimer Heritage Trail
Mortimer Heritage Trail Walk 2: Mortimer Common 3km (2.25 miles) This second of two moderate walks identifying interesting properties and places covers Mortimer Common, the newer part of the village, with homes being built mainly after 1880. Until then it had grown gorse and birch but not much else, the gravel soil being useless for agriculture. The Enclosure Acts from earlier that century had put the Common into private ownership. Housebuilding started slowly with existing ‘squatter’ cottages in Longmoor, Groves Corner and Summerlug being joined by a few more. West End House and Briar Lea House were the only sizeable properties by 1840. After land sales in 1870-71, house building started in earnest from about 1880 including in Windmill Road, Victoria Road and King Street (named after Mr King the baker), the population growing rapidly from the early 1900s. We start at the Community Centre car park, marked (1) on the red route on page 4, in the Fairground. The Fairground, is designated as an open space amenity. Today this is where travelling fairs and circuses come and village events are held. In the past, it has been used for gymkhanas, which have attracted Royal participants. Earlier still cattle and horse fairs were held there with animals being driven along Welshman’s Road allegedly from Wales but more likely from the railway sidings at Padworth. The Horse and Groom pub opposite would have been the oldest pub in the village had it remained in its original 17th century half-timbered building. The present pub was built adjacent, the original becoming a butcher’s shop. -

While it does not have the same formal development plan status as these policies, it has been formally adopted by the Mayor as supplementary guidance under his powers under the Greater London Authority Act 1999 (as amended). Adoption followed a period of public consultation, and a summary of the comments received and the responses of the Mayor to those comments is available on the Greater London Authority website. It will therefore be a material consideration in drawing up development plan documents and in taking planning decisions. In the 1950s-60s changes in river engineering practices and agricultural intensification caused the water vole population to decline. These changes resulted in habitat loss and degradation which caused fragmentation and isolation of water vole populations. Since the 1980s an introduced predator, the American mink Neovison vison has decimated water vole populations as its range has expanded throughout England, Scotland and Wales. Mink are able to counter the water voles’ anti-predatory behaviours since they swim well, hunt efficiently and female mink are small enough to enter water voles’ burrows. The Berks, Bucks and Oxon Wildlife Trust launched its Water Vole Recovery Project in 1998. The aim of the project was to arrest the decline of water voles within the three counties and to work to stabilise and increase the water vole population. -

Habitat Advisory visit to the River Darent, Kent, undertaken on behalf of Kingfisher Angling and Preservation Society, by Vaughan Lewis, Windrush AEC Ltd March 2005 Sponsored by: 1.0 Introduction This report forms the output of a site visit to the River Darent, near Eynsford, Kent on 31 March 2005 on behalf of Kingfisher Angling and Preservation Society (KAPS). Information in the report is based on observations on the day of the visit and additional comments provided by members of the club. This is the third advisory visit undertaken by the Wild Trout Trust (WTT) to the River Darent in this area, with visits previously made to the Park Farm Fishery and Darent Valley Trout Fishers water. Located between these fisheries, this visit to the KAPS fishery compliments management advice given in previous visits to these fisheries. Habitat in the River Darent has been severely compromised in the past by long periods of low flow, due in part to borehole abstraction for potable supply. However, negotiations with water undertakers in the Darent valley have secured a significant reduction in the volume of water abstracted, with an associated partial restoration of flows in the river. KAPS has a membership of approximately 110 members, with a mix of stillwater and river fisheries in Kent. Throughout the report, normal convention is followed, with right bank (RB) and left bank (LB) of the river identified when looking downstream. 2.0 Fishery Description The KAPS fishery on the River Darent effectively begins at the outlet from their ex. gravel pit fishery at Lullingstone Castle. This is a now a lake of some 15-20ha, stocked with Rainbow trout Onchorhynchus mykiss.
