Provenance Hamilton Press, Venice Acquired directly from the above by the present owner in 1997

In 1993 Ed Ruscha and master printer Ed Hamilton began working on a series of hand-pulled lithographs entitled Archi-Props. The images that resulted from this partnership hold a very special place in the artist’s oeuvre – referencing Ruscha’s interest in vernacular architectural and cultural documentation (e.g. Every Building on the Sunset Strip, 1966 and Then & Now: Hollywood Boulevard 1973-2004, 2004) with a paired down image of an anonymous storefront building. The series Archi-Props was made in an edition of 20 and published by Patrick Painter, Santa Monica. The image that is equivalent to the present lot in the edition reads PARTS. In keeping with Ruscha’s career-long relationship with wordplay, the artist removed the P in PARTS and created this image, which is emblematic of so many aspects of Ruscha’s work.

I wanted to find out where the figure is, what has happened “ to it, and it’s fantastic to search through this history of representation-figuration. – Thomas Houseago ”

Yorkshire-born, Los-Angeles based artist Thomas Houseago is well-known for his monumental based on the body and architecture. Throughout his practice in all its forms, the artist explores the nature of embodiment and the interplay between mental and physical being.

The combination of historical allusion and seemingly impulsive gesture brings an explosive energy to Houseago’s work. The artist draws from a broad range of influences—including classical Greek ; African, American, and Pacific tribal art; Renaissance and Modern interpretations of the figure; and musical performance, as well as anime, sci-fi and cyborg characters. Houseago’s materials also draw from classical and modernist sculpture, such as carved wood, clay, plaster and bronze- as well as more contemporary materials like rebar, Tuf-Cal and hemp.

Houseago’s paintings, such as TBC (helmet mask panel), 2013, are masterful in their conflation of drawing and sculpture, mapping the transition from concept to form. The canvases typically measure 5 × 4 feet or 7 × 6 feet, and are a confrontation between memory and fantasy, ritual and improvisation, escaping the conventional painterly expectations of illusory space upon the two- dimensional plane. Houseago renders the mask-as-face leitmotif in TBC (helmet mask panel) in acrylic and graphite, offset by black charcoal. Although these “drawn paintings” are conversant with the artist’s sculptural language of mass and surface, they redefine the canvas as a mind- expanding site that resists any single interpretation.

The mask motif is one that the artist settled on years ago, but his use of crayons and pastels came about more recently, when Houseago was drawing with his young daughter. TBC (helmet mask panel) is a highly worked and layered portrait, where the artist uses a skull-like mask as the basis of a universal, egalitarian, homogenous, full-faced portrait. The masks appear anonymous, but each is personal. In TBC (helmet mask panel) we see the psychedelic mental state being explored and intensified by repetitive and obsessive lines across the canvas and shafts of color in a narrow palette, in yellows, greens and blues.

The visual primitivism of these paintings can be compared to outsider art: naive, unselfconscious and honest, but with a wholeness of form that evokes both a child-like quality and a mature insight into the fragility of human nature. Houseago’s works across all media evince myriad references: rough surfaces recall unearthed classical artifacts, while the underlying principles attest to the influence of modern and contemporary masters such as Constantin Brancusi, Pablo Picasso, Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, Alberto Giacometti, and Franz West.

Houseago’s work was the subject of a major survey exhibition at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris in 2019. Recent solo exhibitions include Lovers, Le Consortium, Dijon, France (2015–2016); Masks (Pentagon), Rockefeller Plaza, New York (2015); Studies ’98–’14, Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, The Hague, The Netherlands (2014) and Storm King Art Center, Mountainville, New York (2013)

Made in California: Contemporary Art | 47 The Rene & Veronica di Rosa Foundation Lots 34-37

di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art, based in Napa California, was established by devoted art patrons Rene and Veronica di Rosa. The di Rosas purchased over 400 acres of the Huichica Land Trust, on the border between Napa and Sonoma counties, in 1960. They brought back to life the old stone winery and in studying viticulture at the University of California at Davis, Rene di Rosa befriended artists and professors including , Roy de Forest and , among others. Through these relationships di Rosa became a lifelong art collector and arts patron, serving on the Board of Trustees of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The San Francisco Art Institute and New York’s Whitney Museum National Committee. di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art is the only foundation in existence with such a significant collection of Bay Area artists from the post-World War II period onwards. It was developed from the vision of Rene and Veronica di Rosa and built upon long standing relationships with the artists of Northern California.

Hosting the Viola Frey retrospective in 2019, the di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art continues to further the study of contemporary art in the Bay Area to this day. These works are being sold to benefit the future of the di Rosa and further its mission as a catalyst for transformative experiences with contemporary art of Northern California.

The Roths at Hymenstown House, Co Tipperary

William Matson Roth was the scion of a shipping empire, the Matson Navigation company founded by his grandfather, Captain William Matson who moved to San Francisco from his native Sweden. He was a committed public servant who served as a regent at the University of California, helped found the Ploughshares Fund and was a director of the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union).

William Roth was most well known as the savior of Ghirardelli Square. Along with his mother, he purchased the factory after Ghirardelli had vacated it with the direct intention of ensuring it was saved for historic preservation. The Roths spent millions to restore the building and added gardens, a theater, restaurants and a nightclub. They envisioned it as a multi-use site and a center for tourists to shop, dine and enjoy San Francisco. Ghirardelli Square became a model for industrial revitalization for American cities and is listed on the National Historic Register.

His parents William and Lurline Roth purchased the Filoli estate from the Bourne family in 1937, who constructed it in 1917. Filoli is near Woodside, California and is anchored by an exquisite Georgian home designed by Willis Polk and is flanked by extensive formal gardens. During the Roths’ tenure in the home, the formal gardens gained worldwide recognition. Mrs. Lurline Roth donated Filoli, all 654 acres including the House and formal Garden, to the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 1975 for the enjoyment and inspiration of future generations. Filoli is a registered California State Historic Landmark and is enjoyed by many in the Bay Area as a treasure of our culture and history.

William and Josephine Roth were committed patrons of the arts and culture in the Bay Area, in addition to gifting Filoli to the public and redeveloping Ghirardelli Square, William was president of what is now the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. They formed lifelong friendships with Bay Area artists and galleries, including Imogene Cunningham, Jess (Jess Collins), King Ubu Gallery and Hansen-Fuller Gallery. Their legacy lives on through their commitment to public service and through the artworks in their collection.

Rather than create art himself, Dr. Conkey devoted his resources to the support of artists working in the . Between 1970 and 2000, Dr. Conkey dedicated much of his time and energy by serving on museum boards and providing sponsorship for performance art works. He regularly visited gallery exhibitions and artists’ studios and nearly always found an addition to his vast and important collection. In addition to the lots on offer in the following pages, works from Dr. Conkey’s collection are in the permanent collections of SFMOMA and the Block Museum at Northwestern University.
