After the crash David was rushed into life-saving surgery, where he flat-lined twice. Both David and his co-pilot survived the crash, but he is living as a paraplegic due to the injuries. This incident inspired David to face a fear of his each year on the anniversary of his crash. 98.5 KYGO has partnered with A-1 Scuba & Travel Aquatics Center and Denver’s Downtown Aquarium to help David face his biggest fear of swimming with sharks. Throughout the month of June, Tracy Dixon from KYGO Mornings will assist David in getting his scuba certification, learning how to dive, practice dives, open water dives and the final dive with sharks. The first date will be Wednesday, June 7 at 10:00 am at the Denver Aquarium. Throughout the month of June, 98.5 KYGO will continue to share this story on-air and on KYGO.com chronicling the progress David makes leading up to his swim with sharks. David Ortiz- Joined the US Army in January 2008 and medically retired May 8, 2015. David deployed to Afghanistan in September 2011. He was assigned to the 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade 1-17 Cavalry A Troop at the time of his crash. OH58D pilot (Kiowa Warrior) and CW2 rank.
