During his speech Oct. 4, 2018, Ronald J. Gidwitz, U.S. Ambassador to Belgium, said that many Americans don’t know the story of Petite-Chapelle, a town that was liberated in 1918 by African-American soldiers during World War I. It was the first time that the U.S. Ambassador to Belgium was in Petite-Chapelle. He is the most famous character of the town and has his own statue in the center on Place Verte. Each Saturday before the third Sunday of October, hundreds of people take part in a parade to celebrate the man who represents the happy-go-lucky and cheerful image of the people of Soignies. This year, the festivities will take place Oct. 20 and 23. On Saturday, starting at 7:15 p.m., a top-hatted gentleman playing the cobbler, nicknamed “Simpélourd,” will be welcomed by the crowd and the authorities at the Soignies train station. He will climb into his convertible and throw out the famous caramel candies called “carabibis.” Then the hero of the day will be escorted by marching bands, giants and folkloric groups through the city in the direction of the city hall on Place Verte. The giants Dudule and Josephine, with their daughter Charlotte, will also be a part of the festival. A fireworks display will light up the sky after the procession. Simpélourd will retire and be replaced by a dummy. The effigy will be set out the following three days until it is burned Tuesday night at 8 p.m. The effigy will be This statue of Simpélourd is located Place Verte in Soignies, Belgium. [12] October 12, 2018 Highway Construction and Road Closures You may experience some delays while driving in the Benelux this season. Road construction projects are occurring throughout the countries and may result in temporary lane closures and road congestion. We will provide regular updates to ensure that the community is informed and prepared.

Nivelles-Haut-Ittre (E19/A7): A road construction project began on E19/A7 between Nivelles and Haut-Ittre, in the direction of Brussels. Through Oct. 14, the loop of the Haut-Ittre inetrchange coming from Mons to the Nationale 28 is closed to traffic. Drivers will have to follow a deviation, or detour, via exit 18 on the E19. Work is scheduled to be completed by the beginning of November.

Gilly (N90): The speed of traffic is reduced to 50 km/h on N90 in Gilly, in the direction of Mons, due to road construction. Work is scheduled to be completed by the end of November.

Brussels: Road construction is still ongoing in the Reyers-Montgomery Tunnel in both directions and in the Reyers-Meiser Tunnel in the direction of the E40.

Outside the Gate Outside Drivers who travel to Brussels from the ring are advised to use alternative routes via the A12, the Leopold III Tunnel and the E411. Work is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.

Schinnen (A76): Due to the construction of the new on and off ramps on A76 (Highway -Geleen), exit Schinnen #4 from Heerlen towards Geleen is closed. This results in the closure of the hard shoulder on both sides of the highway and a speed restriction of 70 km per hour until Jan. 31, 2019. Traffic should follow the yellow signs directing them to exit #2 Geleen- and then access #2 on the A76 direction to Beek-Schinnen. The new A76 on and off ramps are scheduled to be completed this fall.

Please be cautious and patient while driving at all times. If you have questions or would like to report other highway construction sites and road closures, please email the U.S. Army Garrison Benelux Public Affairs Office at [email protected].
