1 BATTLE & DISTRICT HISTORICAL SOCIETY baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaac THE ROYAL SUSSEX REGIMENT IN WORLD WAR I Matthew Jones 20 March 2014 This lecture was originally scheduled for 20 February 2014. However Mr Jones kindly agreed to swap dates due to the speaker for ‘To The Manor Born …’ becoming unavailable.. ‘Lowther’s Own Marching Song’1 1. Refrain Oh the Sussex boys are stirring For the Sussex stock is staunch In the wood-land and the Down; And the Sussex blood is true, We are moving in the hamlet, And the Sussex lads are keen We are rising in the town; When there’s soldier’s work to do. For the call in King and Country Hear us tramp, tramp, tramp Since the foe has asked for war, ’til the county is a camp, And when danger calls or duty And we start the little business We are always to the fore. We have sworn to carry through. 2. We have come from shop and sheepfold, We have come from desk and store, We have left our peaceful callings To be taught the trade of war; For our hearths, and homes, and honour As a bulwark we will stand, Fighting hard for England’s glory And the pleasant Sussex land. repeat refrain 3. Oh we know that we are wanted, And we know the risk we run, But we wouldn’t think of shrinking When there’s duty to be done. We would go if others shirked it And we had to go alone For the honour of our country And our pride in “Lowther’s Own.” repeat refrain Mr Jones is Assistant County Archivist at the West Sussex Record Office, which houses the regimental archive of our county regiment and we were delighted to welcome him for an interesting and at times deeply moving insight into the regiment and lives of some of its men.

  • Blakeney WW1 Casualties Pamela Peake
Blakeney WW1 Casualties Pamela Peake Every year Blakeney, like many villages, towns and cities around the country, remembers the sacrifices made in both World Wars by men whose names are inscribed on village memorials. Who were they? In this study an attempt has been made to collect the names of all who served in WW1, with greater attention being paid to the casualties and it is this group that are considered here. This has not been an easy exercise as the names on the memorials are surnames with initials; nationwide the majority of memorials provide Christian names which makes identification easier. Additional confusion has come from errors introduced during the preparation of the memorial inscription when initials were sometimes transcribed incorrectly. However, one surprising result of this study is the recognition that not all the names of casualties for Blakeney appear on the memorials, both on New Road and in St Nicholas Church. Various accounts of the casualties have appeared over the past six years either in the Glaven Valley News or the BAHS Newsletters . At the same time display boards have appeared in the church with similar information plus photographs and details of the battles where individuals were killed. By September 1914 out of a population of 708 for the village, newspaper accounts show that 80 men had volunteered, by January 1915 this number had risen to 145 and over the next four years it would rise even higher. So there could hardly have been a family or house in the village that emerged untouched from the war. There are 39 known casualties for Blakeney and detailed records have been completed for 38 of them; these form the basis of the following account.

  • Nevill Lindsay Young by Nicola Mcdowell
West Sussex & the Great War Project www.westsussexpast.org.uk Following in His Father’s Footsteps Image from West Sussex Record Office RSR PH 2/14 A Case Study of 2nd Lieutenant Nevill Lindsay Young By Nicola McDowell © Nicola McDowell and West Sussex County Council 1 West Sussex & the Great War Project www.westsussexpast.org.uk Summary This Case Study researches the life of Second Lieutenant Nevill Lindsay Young, 2nd Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment. With reference to his own brief war diary, the transcript of his battalion diary and with the assistance of his service record and various other family records and photographs, this Case Study pieces together Nevill’s life prior to joining the army and his service in the Royal Sussex Regiment during The Great War . Introduction Second Lieutenant Nevill Lindsay Young was one of the very many young men, who at the outbreak of World War 1, willingly gave up their lives to fight for their country. His story, like many others is a humbling and emotive one. Drawn by the intriguing prospect of reading an original war diary, that was written in the trenches and survived one of the most famous battlefields of The Great War, I chose to research Nevill’s story and set off to West Sussex Record Office (WSRO) in Chichester to delve into the history of a young man who was neither a member of my family or known to me in any way at all. Family Background Nevill Lindsay Young was born on the 19th July 1897. His father was Major General James Charles Young, an Irishman who began his own prestigious military career in the 35th Regiment of Foot in 1877.

  • Rushmoor Men Who Died During the Battle of the Somme
Rushmoor men who died during the Battle of the Somme Compiled by Paul H Vickers, Friends of the Aldershot Military Museum, January 2016 Introduction To be included in this list a man must be included in the Rushmoor Roll of Honour: citizens of Aldershot, Farnborough and Cove who fell in the First World War as a resident of Rushmoor at the time of the First World War. The criteria for determining residency and the sources used for each man are detailed in the Rushmoor Roll of Honour. From the Rushmoor Roll of Honour men were identified who had died during the dates of the battle of the Somme, 1 July to 18 November 1916. Men who died up to 30 November were also considered to allow for those who may have died later of wounds received during the battle. To determine if they died at the Somme, consideration was then given to their unit and the known locations and actions of that unit, whether the man was buried in one of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) Somme cemeteries or listed on a memorial to the missing of the Somme, mainly the Thiepval Memorial, or who are noted in the Roll of Honour details as having died at the Somme or as a result of wounds sustained at the Somme. The entries in this list are arranged by regiment and battalion (or battery for the Royal Artillery). For each man the entry from the Rushmoor Roll of Honour is given, and for each regiment or battalion there is a summary of its movements up to the start of the Battle of the Somme and its participation in the battle up to the time the men listed were killed.
