Orientalism When Sir William Jones proposed, in his famous third presidential address before the Asiatick Society in 1786, the thesis that the Sanskrit language was related to the classical European languages, Greek and Latin, and indeed to Gothic, Celtic and Persian, this was later received not only as a milestone in the history of linguistics. This newly found linguistic relationship represented at the same time the most important theoretical foundation on which European Orientalists reconstructed a pre-history of South Asia, the main elements of which achieved general recognition in the second half of the 19th century. According to this reconstruction, around the middle of the second millenium BCE, Indo-European tribes who called themselves a¯rya (Aryans) migrated from the north into India where they progressively usurped the indigenous popula- tion and became the new ruling class. In colonial India this so-called “Aryan migration theory” met with an astonishing and diverse reception within the identity-forming discourses of different people groups. The reconstruction of an epoch lying almost three to four thousand years in the past metamorphosed, in the words of Jan Assman, into an ‘internalized past’, that is, through an act of semioticization the Aryan migration was transformed into a ‘hot memory’ in Levi-Strauss’s sense, and thereby into a ‘founding history, i.e. a myth’ (Assman 1992:75–77). -

Baghawat Geeta, Class 138: Chapter 10, Verses 33 – 35 Shloka # 33: अक्षराणामकारोऽस्िम द्वन्द्वः सामािसकस्य च। अहमेवाक्षयः कालो धाताऽहं िवश्वतोमुखः।।10.33।। Aksaranam, of the letters; I am the akarah, letter a. Samasikasya, of the group of compound words, I am the compund (called) Dvandva. Besides, aham eva, I Myself; am the aksayah, infinite, endless; kalah, time, well known as ‘moment’ etc.; or, I am the supreme God who is Kala (Time, the measurer) even of time. I am the dhata, Dispenser, the dispenser of the fruits of actions of the whole world, visvatomukhah, with faces everywhere. Akshara: Continuing his teaching, Swamiji said, we are seeing Sri Krishna continue enumeration of the glories of Ishwara. In Shloka # 33, he said that among Aksharas I am Aa. Sarasvati Devi is in the form of Alphabetic letters. Even among all letters Aa is most sacred. It is sacred because it is a basic letter that emerges from our mouth without doing anything to the mouth. Thus sounds such as E, U come about by some modification to the mouth whereas Aa is an effortless sound of the mouth. Akara is also a flexible sound that can be modified into other alphabets. Hence Aa kara is considered Karana aksharam, causal sound, while all other alphabets are considered Karya Aksharam, the effect. Vedas say that A Kara manifests as all other letters. It says all letters are a modification of Aa. In our tradition every alphabet has a presiding deity. The presiding deity of Aa is Brahmaji, the Creator of the world. -

The Key for Threefold Austerity Date: 2009-11-22 Author: Vaijayantimala devi dasi Dear Prabhujis and Matajis, Hare Krishna! Please accept my humble obeisances! All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva! The scriptures clearly insist that the human form of life is meant for tapasya or penance or austerity by which we can purify our existence. Our idea of tapasya is going to the forest and meditating. This is highly impossible in this age and hence we think that we cannot do any austerity. In Srimad Bhagavad Gita Lord Shri Krishna lists the austerities of body, words and mind and these are austerities which we can follow in our daily lives and thus purify our valuable human existence. 1. Austerity of the body – Srimad Bhagavad Gita 17.14, deva-dvija-guru-prājña- pūjanaṁ śaucam ārjavam brahmacaryam ahiṁsā ca śārīraṁ tapa ucyate Austerity of the body consists in worship of the Supreme Lord, the braahmanaas, the spiritual master, and superiors like the father and mother, and in cleanliness, simplicity, celibacy and nonviolence. 2. Austerity of speech – Srimad Bhagavad Gita 17.15, anudvega-karaṁ vākyaṁ satyaṁ priya-hitaṁ ca yat svādhyāyābhyasanaṁ caiva vāṅ-mayaṁ tapa ucyate Austerity of speech consists in speaking words that are truthful, pleasing, beneficial, and not agitating to others, and also in regularly reciting Vedic literature. 3. Austerity of mind - Srimad Bhagavad Gita 17.16, manaḥ-prasādaḥ saumyatvaṁ maunam ātma-vinigrahaḥ bhāva-saṁśuddhir ity etat tapo mānasam ucyate And satisfaction, simplicity, gravity, self-control and purification of one’s existence are the austerities of the mind. All our sinful activities are performed either by the body or by the words or by the mind or by their combination. -

Globalization of disease1 has led the world to be only as resilient as the least resilient country and person2, especially for highly contagious COVID-19 which has spread with scale and severity not seen since Spanish flu3. The variants of the virus (such as B.1.617.2 Delta4, Delta Plus, Epsilon, Gamma5) continue to threaten even those vaccinated. Secondary diseases such as black fungus are targeting COVID patients6 and killing almost one in two persons in such cases7. 2. Distorted policy decisions and conflicting principles can lead to polarizations amongst nations and within, leading to various extremes such as – the hoarding of vaccines8 in some places, the wastage of vaccines9 in others, and an unaddressed shortage of vaccines globally10. 3. The pandemic has exposed the fragility11 of the global system. The disruption in the supply chain is especially worrisome for essential food supplies12 which disproportionately affects the already most vulnerable even more. 4. Lockdowns have brought the global economy into crisis13 bringing recessions14 and worsening unemployment rates15. This has resulted in our dependence on modern medicine, on eating wrong or too much food and engaging in other addictive behaviors due to stress and other factors. This dependence is not a permanent solution. It is a temporary distraction from the inner spiritual quest that leads to a permanent solution and balance between the body, mind and spirit. Western culture gives importance to personal gain, both physical and financial. It ignores the inner development of the soul and spirit to a new awakening. When we pass from this world, we do not take our successes and money with us. In order to find a balance between our spiritual development and financial successes, we find ourselves seeking the answers in the ancient wisdom of India, written in the books of knowledge called the Vedas .The Indian sages well understood this paradox of life, and tapped into the nature of the inner universe to find a deeper meaning to life. It is very important to know and be aware of this phenomenon. Reciting any mantra is a powerful practice that speeds the path and clears the obstacles in the way of reaching realization. Among the many mantras one may choose, the Gayatri Mantra is one of the most beneficial. The Gayatri uses solar energy vibrations of the Sun to recharge our metabolism in each and every cell in our body and mind. -

God is One Om Shanti Mandiram Columbia MO 2001 The treasure was lost. We have regained it. This publication is not fully satisfactory. There is a tremendous scope for its improvement. Then why to publish it? The alternative was to let it get recycled. There is a popular saying in American academic circles: Publish or Perish. The only justification we have is to preserve the valuable contents for posterity. Yet it is one hundred times better than its original. We have devoted a great deal of our time, money, and energy to improve it. The entire work was recomposed on computer. Figures [pictures] were scanned and inserted. Diacritical marks were provided as far as possible. References to citations were given in certain cases. But when a vessel is already too dirty it is very difficult to clean it even in a dozen attempts. The original was an assemblage of scattered articles written by specialists in their own field. Some were extracted from publications already published. It was issued as a special number of a journal. It needed a competent editor. Even that too was not adequate unless the editor possessed sufficient knowledge of and full competence in all the subject areas covered. One way to make it correct and complete was to prepare a kind of draft and circulate it among all the writers, or among those who could critically examine a particular paper in their respective field.
