Hood: A hood combines a fly mask with a neck cover. It overlaps and attaches to a fly- sheet with Velcro or snaps. It provides more complete coverage than a separate mask and neck cover because it eliminates the space between them.

Breakaway halter: Some fly gear, such as a muzzle guard or brow band, attaches to a hal- ter. It’s not uncommon for a horse turned out wearing a standard halter to suffer injury or even death when he gets the halter caught on a post, a branch or even his own . If your horse needs to wear a halter during turn- out, use only a breakaway (safety) halter.

Ear bonnet: Insects entering your horse’s ears can cause not only annoying and danger- ous head shaking, but also serious skin infec- tions. An ear bonnet covers the horse’s ears and can be a part of a fly mask or a separate piece held in place by the bridle or halter.

Leg wraps & bands: Leg wraps are usually made of the same poly-vinyl fabric as flysheets, and wrap around a horse’s cannon bones to keep flies off. Some models extend down over the coronary band and cover the back of the pastern where flies like to bite. Leg bands con- taining fly repellents are only a few inches wide and are applied around the cannon bones. You can apply fly spray to any leg wraps to increase fly protection.

Tail bag: A horse’s own best weapon against flies is a long, full, healthy tail. But some hors- es, for whatever reason, don’t have a full tail, and show horses often have their tails braided or wrapped to protect them from damage. A tail bag with a tassel on the end can protect a tail and give it added reach.

Collar: Fly-repellent collars containing natural (citronella or cedar oil) or artificial (permethrin) insect repellents can be used to keep flies and mosquitoes away from a horse’s neck. Some collars are applied snuggly while others should be loose. Follow the manufac- turer’s instructions. —Richard Klimesh and Cherry Hill IN THE KNOW Classic Equine 4D Reining

An all-around cowboy, Jack Newton recognized and developed many great horses during his career. For more than half a century, he was a major contender in a wide QHN File QHN Photo File variety of performance horse events, including calf roping, steer roping, reining, cutting and Western pleasure. He also judged breed association shows and cuttings. One of his most-noted performers was Dun Commander, a son of Commander King, who Newton also showed suc- cessfully for the stallion’s owner, James Kemp, and whom Newton praised as the all-time best horse he had ridden. Newton and Dun Commander were very competitive and consistent in the all-around competitions, racking up points in eight events. It has been said that very few people could communicate with a horse like Newton could. Newton claimed that Dun Commander had the best mind of any horse he had ever ridden, as evidenced by his many cham- pionship titles. In 1958, Newton rode Poco Stampede, an NCHA Hall of Fame inductee, to the NCHA Reserve World Champion Cutting Horse title and a year later, 1959, they won the NCHA World Championship. Newton celebrated his 90th birthday on May 15 with a number of his old friends and fellow trainers who had stopped by to visit him at the Heritage House of Keller Health & Rehabilitation Center in Keller, Texas, where Jack Newton (left) and James Kemp Newton now resides. ★
