ThechoirhasbeeninexistenceinHeacham,inoneformoranother,formany decadesandhasimprovedgreatlyunderNigel’sleadership. FromthebeginningofSeptembertotheendofApril,werehearseonWednesdayeveningsfrom 19.30until21.00attheMethodistChurchinHeacham.Concertsareperformedatvariouschurches intheWestNorfolkareaatChristmastimeandalsointhespring.Ourchoiceofmusicisvaried, encompassingbothsacredandsecularpieces.Ournumbersvarybetween25–30membersand althoughthemajorityofsingersare“mature”,weareenthusiastic,loyalandaboveallenjoymaking music. Therehasovertheyearsbeenmanyfireslargeandsmallonthefen,before1960mostofthem werecausedbythefirementhrowingcindersoutonthesideofthetrack,thenwhenthevillage dumpwasmovedtothefirsthillonthefen,thedumpwouldgetalightandspreadtothefen. Afirebreak/trackwasconstructedfromthesandpitgatetothecuttingatWolfertontoallowthe fireenginestogetontothefen.Iwellrememberonelargefirethatstartedneartherailwayline andspreadacrosstheroadtotheopencommonandtheshutupcommon,alsoonefireontheopen common,nearHoddy’sHole,whentheheatwassointensethatitcrackedthebrickworkonthe endcottageatPleasantPlace.AnotherfireinAugust1982threatenedthehomesinManorSide andtheresidentsusedgardenhosestokeeptheflamesatbaytillthefirebrigadearrived. AtonetimethefireenginewasstationedinMissManns’barnatthetopofHeathRoadsoit washandyforthefiresonthefenandcommon.Youwillalwaysgetfires,maybeitwouldbean ideatomakeafirebreakaroundtheperimeterofthefen. The new council will be settling down again to summer village business, ensuring the environment is clean and tidy, grass is cut and theplayground equipment maintained safely for childrentoenjoythroughouttheholidays. 7 DERSINGHAMBROWNIES2011PACKHOLIDAY Twentytwomembersofthe1 st &2 nd DersinghamBrowniesand 6leadersenjoyedtheirAnnual PackHolidayfrom15 th -18 th April.Thegroupstayedat SwaffhamJuniorSchoolandhad abusyandfunpackedtime.The themewas“TheJungleBook”. Thebrowniesweredividedinto4 Sixesnamedafteranimals: elephants,lions,monkeysand tigersandtheleaderswere namedafterpopularJunglebook characters-Bagheera,Shere Khan,KingLouie,Kaa,Colonel HathiandRaksha.Onthefirst daytheybegananumberof themelinkedcraftsincluding makingJungleanimalmasks, puppetsanddressingsoftdolls. Theyplayedgamesoutside,held apyjamaparadeandsewed badgesontotheircampblankets. Thebrownieshadtheopportunitytohelpwiththecooking,layingthetable,washingupand keepingtheirownpossessionsandtheholidayhometidy. Theyworkedtowardsanumberofinterestbadgesincludingpackholiday,cook,toymakerand packholidayadvanced. OntheseconddaytheyenjoyedacoachtriptotheIceniVillageatCockleyCleywherethey sawthemuseum,Saxonchurch,cottageandvillage.Theyalsoenjoyedapicniclunchandgames. TheythentravelledontotheHighLodgeForestCentreatThetfordwheretheytookpartina squirrelscampertrailandenjoyedanicecream. Sundaymorningsawthemtakingpartina“BrowniesOwn”tomarkPalmSunday.Seven browniesparticipatedinadramatisedversionofthePalmSundaystory,everyonewroteandread theirownprayerandtheysangtwo wellknownsongs. Theycontinuedtheircraft activitiesbydecoratingpencilpots, makinghamabeadcoasters,door hangers,paintingjungleanimal modelsandcompletingEaster cards,toysandbaskets.Inthe afternoontheyhadanEasterEgg huntandontheSundayevening theyenjoyedanoutdoorsingsong andtheytoastedmarshmallows overt-lights. Everyonewenthomehappybut tiredandtheleadershavealready discussedideasfornextyear. □

Iunderstandthattheinspectionreportsforthe Gablesareofthehighest3starstandard–atribute totheworkofmanagerMandySadlerandher dedicatedteamofstaff.ButtometheGablesjust alwaysseemssuchaveryappealing,happy,friendly andwellrunplacebuzzingwithactivity. UnfortunatelyIusuallyfindmyselfleavingjustastheappetisingwaftsoflunchemanatefromthe kitchen!Iwouldcertainlyliketogetmynamedownforaplaceifandwhenthetimecomes! MaybeIshouldtalknicelytomychildren! □ ParishCouncilReport TheMarchmeetingofDersinghamParishCouncilbegan,asusual,withareportfromthepolice ofcrimesinthevillageduringthepreviousmonth.Thismonth,thesecomprisedbreakingofthe window;acarbeingscratched;anassault;criminaldamagetothree‘Forsale’;anddamagetoa vehicle.Anyonewithinformationaboutanyoftheseshouldcontactthepolice. AnotherregularitemontheCouncilagendaisconsiderationofplanningapplicationsanda reportonplanningdecisionstakenbytheBoroughCouncil.InMarch,therewasjustone applicationforaproposedextensionwhichtheCouncilrecommendedforapproval.Membersof thepublicareencouragedtolettheParishCouncilknowofanyconcernstheyhaveabout applicationssothattheycanbeconsideredandpossiblyincludedinthecommentssenttothe Borough. TheCouncilagreedtochangetheexistingarrangementsforitswebsite,whichwillenable Councilstafftopostinformationdirectlyratherthanthroughathirdparty.Thisshouldensurethat thewebsiteismoreup-to-date. 13 DickMelton AlotofpeopleaskmeaboutTheEmblance.Wellifyousaytomostpeoplewho liveinthevillageofDersinghamtodaythatyouweregoingtohaveawalkaround TheEmblance,orthatyouaregoingtotakeashortcutacrossTheEmblancetoSt George’sSchool,theywouldwonderwhatyouaretalkingabout. Waybackintheforties,whenIwenttoDersinghamPrimarySchool,TheEmblance wasoneofourfavouriteplacestogoandplay.Itisstilltheretoday.Justclimboverthefivebargate oppositetheFeathershotelandyouenter60acresofwildparadise.WhenIwasaboyitwasnotlike thisatall:therewasalargepondinthemiddlethatwasfullofsmallfishandallsortsofwildlife,like newts,frogsandmanyducksandwaterhens.Ifyouwentuptheslopeinthedirectionof DersinghamWoodinthespringtime,thisareawasamassofwildprimrosesanddaffodils,alsolots ofwildrabbits,deerandpheasants. TherewasafootpaththatwentallthewayfromtheFeathersgatetoStGeorge’sSchoolplaying field.ThebesttimeofyearonTheEmblancewaswintertimewhenthepondfrozeoverandit snowed;thenwewouldskateonthepondandsledgedowntheslopes. Thewordemblemsistakenfromthewordemblementsthatmeanstheannualcropsor profitsoflandcultivatedbyatenantfarmer.Thehouseandbuildings,alsothelandtothewest oftheemblems,wasatonetimeasmallholding. Localportsinthepast IntheLynnNewsonthefirstofApriltherewasanarticleaboutayachtclubbeingbuiltat andalsoacanalandharbouratHeacham.Ofcourse,itwasanAprilFoolsDayjoke,butafew hundredyearsagothiscouldhavebeenareality.CastleRisingwasamuchbiggerportthanKings Lynn;Wolfertonwasalsoaportwithroomforuptosixships;and,asweallknow,Dersinghamwas afishingvillage.SmallboatswentuptheBabingleyrivertoHillingtonandalsouptheHeacham riverasfarasFring.TherewasaharbouratHeachamuntilabout1938whenitgotsiltedupandwas blockedofffromthesea.TherewasalsoaportatRingsteadwiththerivercomingthroughthe DownsandintotheseaatHunstanton,wheretheParishofRingsteadstillhasabout200yardsof beachneartotheHunstanton/Heachamboundary. Thebestpartofthatstoryisthis:IwasgoingalongthebeachroadtoHeachamonthe3rd of Aprilwhenagentlemaninasilver4x4stoppedmeandaskedifIwasalocal,soIsaidyes.Hethen saidmaybeyoucantellmewherethisnewharbourisbeingconstructedatHeachamasIcannotfind it,IamadiggerdriverandIhavecomefortymileslookingforwork.WellIdidnotknowwhetherto windhimuportellhimthetruth,butmebeingadecentoldboytoldhimthetruth.Hethendroveoff downtheroadlookingratherdisappointed. TheGreatRhubarbDisaster ItwasverynicetoseealetterfromPeterHooks.That'swhattheVillageVoiceisallabout, bringingpeopletogetheragain.NowImustsayabigthankyoutoBarryBealesforremindingmeof thegreatDersinghamrhubarbdisaster.This,asBarrysaid,wasagreatshocktothevillageof Dersinghamandalsotosomeofthesurroundingvillages.Itisoneofthereasonsthatthegreattreacle minesatFringhadtoclosedown,becauseinthosedaystherewasverylittlesugaraboutduetothe sugarcaneshortageintheArtic,sopeoplewouldspreadtreacleontheresticksofrhubarb.This disasteralsoaffectedallthegrowersofgingerinthevillagethatwasusedtomakethefamous Dersinghamrhubarbandgingercrisps.Itreallywasabadtimeforthevillage,butonegoodthing cameaboutwhenamanwasclearingupthewiltedleafsontheSandringhamHillallotmentsfound anelephantkiddinginthemthathadescapedfromacircusinthegroundsoftheoldHall.Sothiswas alittlerayofsunshinetocomeoutofaverysadandgloomytimeforthepeopleofDersingham. BaldingsMoat SotheParishCouncilwantanameforwhatisleftoftheoldmoatareadownTheDrift.Wellit wasalwaysknowntousboysasBaldingsMoatwhich,asitwasonthelandofDun-Cowfarmthat wasownedbytheBaldingfamily,seemsmostappropriate.ItwasamuchlargerareaofwaterwhenI

14 wasalad,surroundedbytreesandbusheswithlotsofducksandwaterhensonit.Icanneverwork outwhythatareaiscalledSandringhamViewasthemainviewisofDersinghammarshes, DersinghamWoodsandDersinghamFen. Populationfigures IhavebeentryingtofindoutthepopulationofDersinghamatthepresenttimebutIcannotcome upwiththeexactnumber.SoIshallhavetowaituntilthecensushasbeengatheredinand published.Iwaslookingbackatthecensusfor1921,whentherewerejust1,412peoplelivinginthe villageandtheareaoftheparishwas3,573acreswith8acresofwater,butIthinkwehavelostabit ortwooflandsincethen.OneinterestingfactwasthatWolferton,withonly199people,covered 2,947acresandFlitchamcovered4,223acres.Ofcourse,thelargestparishbyfarinourareais Snettishamwith5,592acresofland,16acresofwater,37acresoftidalwaterandamassive1,342 acresofforeshoreandbeach. TheexhibitionintheBallroomofSandringhamHousemarkstheDukeofEdinburgh’s90th birthdaythisyearwithadisplayonthethemeof“PrincePhilipandtheSea”whichbringstogether paintings,photographs,cartoonsanddocumentsfromhiscareerintheRoyalNavy,whichstarted whenheboardedHMSRamilliesasamidshipmanon1stJanuary1940.Therearealsomementosof theRoyalYachtBritanniaandofsomeofthedozensofmaritimeorganisationsofwhichheisPatron orPresident,aswellassomerarely-seenphotographsfromhischildhood,makingafascinatinglook backathismorethan70yearsconnectedwiththeRoyalNavyandthesea. IntheGardens,theHeadGardenerspentafascinatingweekinAmericarepresentingSandringham aspartofthecelebrationsofthe25thanniversaryofthetwinningofthecityofNorfolk,Virginia withthecountyofNorfolkhere.Beforehedeparted,theGardensteamcompletedworkremovingthe bridgeandcausewaytotheislandintheLowerLakenearYorkCottage.Thiswasinordertofinda secureplacetoplantseveralyoungwalnuttreesbeingpropagatedatBroadlandsinHampshire,as theywerehardpressedtofindalocationtoplantthetreeswheretheywillescapetheattentionsof greysquirrels.Theremovalofaccesstotheislandotherthanbyboatneatlysolvedthisproblemand wehopethewalnutswillestablishwell. ThethreespeakerswerefromtheCastleRisingHistoryGroupandthefirst,FredCooke, introducedustotheactualsubjectofthetalk,namelytheestablishmentandearlyimportanceofthe settlementofCastleRising,howthiswasinfluencedbytheBabingleyRiverandtheproximityofthe settlementtoseaatthattime.Heexplainedhowtheearlyharnessingofthepoweroftheriverbythe establishmentofmillsandtheconsequentdiversionofflowsintoleats,ledtothedeepeningofa channeltotheseaallowingastaithetobeestablishedatCastleRising.ThisresultedinCastleRising becomingthepredominantportfortheregion,pre-datingKing'sLynn;usedbytheRomanstoexport stonefortheirfortatandtheNormansforimportingstonefromFrancetobuildthecastle in1138.Hethentracedthedeclineofthevillage'simportanceastheestuarysiltedup,moreand morelandwasprotectedforagricultureusebyseawalls,andfinallybythediversionoftheGreat OusebytheLynnChannel. SylviaCookethentoldusmoreaboutthehistoryandworkingofthemillsontheBabingleyRiver andKevinElfleetdescribedtheearlysaltworkingsonthetidalmarshesadjacenttoCastleRisingand

TheVictorianshavemuchtoanswerforastheyareresponsibleforintroducingmanyofthe worstinvaders.Someintroducedspecieshavebeenofbenefitbuttoooftentheyhavehada devastatingeffectonournativefloraandfauna.Itisestimatedthatthecosttooureconomyofthe effectofthesealienspeciesisaround£2billionayear.Iwasamazedtohearofthecostof clearingtheOlympicsiteofJapaneseKnotweed.Ithadtobedestroyedasthisplantwilleasily growthroughconcreteinaveryshorttime.Removedfromtheirownenvironmentandsafefrom thepredatorsanddiseasesthatusuallycontrolthemtheyhaveanadvantageoverthenativespecies andflourishaccordingly.Theyalterhabitats,interbreed,andcanhaveagreatimpactonour health.ThesapoftheGiantHogweedforexampleisextremelydangerousandcausesimmense blisterstotheunwarygardenerseekingtodigitout.Inthisareawehavebecomeusedtothesight ofthemuntjacbutperhapsdon’tappreciatetheamountofdamagetheydotoourwoodland.Itwas disturbingtorealisehoweasilywecaneachberesponsibleforthespreadingofthesespecies.The numberofnativecruciancarpinourrivershasbeendangerouslyreducedbywellmeaningpeople who,whengettingridofagardenpond,seektogivetheirgoldfishandKoicarpachanceoflifeby throwingthemintotherivernearby.OnSeptember3 rd 2010theKillerShrimpwasdiscoveredfor thefirsttimeinGraftonWater.ShortlyafterwardsitwasfoundinCardiffBay.Theonlywayit couldhavemadethatjourneywasinthenetsandonthewadersoffishermen.Itcouldeasily survivefordaysuntiltheunsuspectingfishermanwadedintoCardiffBay. 35 36 ASWIMTOREMEMBER byMagwitch InOctober1927,FrauleinMercedesGleitzeswamtheEnglish Channel...andthensheswamitagain!Notjusttoproveshecould, butbecausetherehadbeensomedisputeoverthefirstswimowing toahoaxbyanotherfemaleswimmer. Thiscross-channelswimwasquiteanachievementforawoman, andasanewsworthyeventthroughoutthecountry.Howeverforthe peopleofLincolnshireandNorfolk,aswimofevengreater significancewastheoneFrauleinGleitzecompletedacrossthe Wash,fromLincolnshiretoNorfolk.ThishappenedinJune1929 andwasthefirstsuccessfulswimacrossthisstretchofwater separatingthetwocounties. NotmuchisknownaboutMercedesGleitze,consideringher placeinhistorynationally.Shewasbornin1900inBrighton,but spentalotoftimewithherBavariangrandparentsintheir homeland.Herinterestinlong-distanceswimmingbeganwhenshe wasinhertwentiesandundertooktheswimacrosstheEnglish Channel,whichmusthavebeenexhausting.But,itwouldseemshe wasdeterminedtogodowninhistoryasthefirstwomantodoit, andifthatmeantshehadtodoitalloveragain,thenthatwaswhatshewoulddo,anddid. Luckily,sheonlyhadtoswimacrosstheWashonce,leavingfromButterwickFennearBoston, andcomingashoreatHeacham,somethirteenhourslater.Shehadintendedtoreachlandat Hunstanton,butthetidesprovedtoomuchforherandshewasslightlyoffherpreferredcourse whenherfeettouchedtheshore.She’dbegunherswimearlythatmorning,sothatbythetimeshe arrivedatHeachamat6.30intheevening,it’sclaimedshewassoexhaustedthatitwasallshe coulddotohaulherselfupthebeachonherhandsandknees,totheecstaticwelcomeofthelarge numberofpeoplewho’dgatheredthereforherarrival. Later,shewasrowedroundtoHunstantoninthesupportboatwhichhadkeptalongsideher duringherlongandtiringswim.IthadbeenarrangedthatshewouldstayattheGoldenLion Hotel,andonceshewasputashorethatwaswhereshewentforawell-earnedrest. OnelocallegendhasitthatshecameashoreatOldHunstantonwhereshewasmetbythe Squire,theheadofthelocalland-owningLeStrangefamily,whowasalsotheHereditaryLord HighAdmiraloftheWash.Accordingtooldrecords,assuchhewasentitledto‘claimpossession ofanythingonthebeachorintheseaforasfarasamancanrideahorseorthrowaspear’. Whetherornothewasseriousisnotknown,butheinformedFrauleinGleitzethathewasclaiming her,underthisarchaicruling,ashisveryownproperty.Whatshereplieddoesnotseemtohave beenrecorded! Whatwasrecordedwasherepicswim,withacommemorativeplaquewhichwasplacedonone ofthebeachsheltersatHeacham.Duringthesevere1953floods,theshelterwasoneofthemany buildingsdamaged,andnothingremainedofitexcept fortheplaque,whichwasthenputinthelocalparish councilofficesforsafekeeping.Anewonewas unveiledduringaweekendcelebrationinHeachamto marktheseventy-fifthanniversaryoftheswim. AndasforFrauleinGleitzeherself,shediedin Londonin1980havingfoundedacharityinhername for‘DestituteMenandWomen’butwhichbecame knownasthe‘FamilyWelfareAssociation’. □

ThelasttimeIcycledbythisspotthe treewasabouttobepollardedtokeepit undercontrol.Londonplanesare hybridtreesthattoleratepollutionand canendurethemostseverecorporation pruning-theperfectcitytree.ThisparticulartreeistheveryonethatWordsworthperchedhis imagined(orreal)thrushinforhis1799poemabout‘PoorSusan’. AtthecornerofWoodStreet,whendaylightappears, HangsaThrushthatsingsloud,ithassungforthreeyears: PoorSusanhaspass’dbythespot,andhasheard InthesilenceofmorningthesongoftheBird. ThetreeisgrowingintheoldgraveyardofStPeterCheap(actuallyspeltthatwayonthesign- presumablytoavoidanembarrassingapostleapostrophe).Thisancientchurchwasdestroyedin theGreatFireof1666andnowonlythe graveyardremains.Itisashadyspotwitha parkbenchthatlocalshopandoffice workersuseasaspaceforaquickcigarette. Thisisaquestionoftenposedbythosewhohaveyettoattendoneofourmeetings.Wellletme help out by demonstrating – hopefully – what an important part it plays in safeguarding and enhancingthehealthserviceprovidedtopatientsoftheCaroleBrownHealthCentre. Without an interface between patients and those providing our healthcare, the professionals sufferfromalackofinformationregardingthesatisfaction–orotherwise–ofpatientswiththe serviceprovided.ThisiswherethePPGplaysitspart.ThisdoesnotmeanthatthePPGisan organisation fordealing with complaints because there is a formal path that should be followed whenwishingtomakeacomplaintbutitdoesmakeobservationsontheservicebeingprovidedat bothCaroleBrownandPracticelevel.ItisanactiveparticipantatregularPatientCaremeetingsof doctors,nursesandmanagerswheretheviewsandopinionsofpatientsareexpressedandpossible initiativesdiscussed.Itiscomfortingtoknowthattheprofessionalstaffappreciateandactuponthe inputfromthePPG. Then,asmostreaderswillknow,thePPGisactiveinfundraisingtoenhancethefacilitiesand services provided at the Carole Brown Health Centre. 51 Forgetfulness byMaggieGray AssoonasIopenedmyeyesIknewsomethingwaswrong.Gonewerethe usualsoundsofgullssquealingandthegardenbirdssinging,theradiointhe kitchen,myhusbandmakingourearlymorningtea.Insteadtherewasthis strangenoise,well,notevennoise,justamuffled,faintwhistlingsoundlikea radiator.Itriedtocalmmyself,toslowdownthethuddingofmyheartwhich wasnowboominginmyears.Ibreathedintothecountoffour,outtothecount ofsix.Itriedotherrelaxationmethods,noneofthemworkedandIfeltthetearsbegintofall, slidingdownmycheeksandintomyears.Icouldfeelmyselfgettingmoretense,nomatterhow hardItriednotto.Itseemedthatoneofmygreatestfearshadcometrue. I’veneverworriedaboutlosingmylooks,ifyou’renotwell-blessedinthatdepartment,then youhaven’tgotmuchtolose.NotthatI’munattractiveyouunderstand,justnotaheadturnerlike mysisterAliceandmylatemother.Evenmyfatherwasmuchfanciedbymystudentfriends, somethingIfoundembarrassing,mymotherwasbemusedbyandhefoundflattering,thoughhe’d neveradmitthatofcourse.Butitseemedthepotofgoodlooksforourfamilyhadrunoutbythe timeIcamealong. Losingmyhomeandmysecuritywouldbeashock,butIliketothinktheyarenothingI couldn’thandleandrescue,whilstlosingmyfamilywouldofcourse,bedistressingandhardto copewith.Again,IknowIwouldrecoverintime.Butlosingmysightormyhearingarethetwo thingsIreallyworryabout;youcanfactortheotherlossesintoyourlife,losingyourfamilyis somethingweknowislikelytohappen,deathcomestousall. Buttolosemyhearingespecially,wouldbedevastating;eventhoughIknowthereismuchthat canbedonetohelprestoreitpartially,it’sneverquitethesame.Somuchofmylifeis,andhas been,takenupwithlistening,notjusthearingbutreally,reallylistening.Tomusicforinstance, whichhasbeenagreatpartofmylifefromayoungage,hardlysurprisingwithafatherwhowasa baritoneandsanginthelocalchoir,amotherwhotaughtpiano,andasisterwhodancedfora livingandwasoftenrehearsingathome. AsIwasgrowingup,thehousewasneversilent.Itwasn’tsomethingIthoughtaboutatthe time,Ijustthoughtitwasnormaltohavethisconstantnoiseasabackgroundtoyourlife.Butthe hoursofdarknesswerepreciousasthiswaswhensingingandpianolessonsstopped,andany musicwasplayedquietly.Itwasblisstolieinbedinanalmosttotallysilenthouse,andIoften triedtostayawakeaslongasIcould,listeningtothecreakysoundsofanoldhouse,therattlingof old,ill-fittingsashwindowsandthepeltingofrainlikelittlebulletsagainstthewindowpaneson stormynights. AsateenagerIaddedmyownchoiceofmusictothemix;achildoftheSixties,theRolling StonesoftencompetedwithAlice’s‘SwanLake’,myfather’sdeepvoiceandthesoundofthe pianoasmymotherplayed,constructinghernextlesson.Ofcourse,whenevershehadapupil,the restofuswereexpectedtoplayourmusicquietly,thoughpreferablynotatallsoasnottobea distraction. Oneofmyfavouritepastimeswastowanderdowntothebeach,andsitontheshingle,listening totheshushingoftheseaasitflowedoverthegravelandwassuckedbackagain,overandover.I founditmesmerisingandrelaxing,andoftenuseditinadulthoodasabackgroundtomeditation, andwhenIhavebeencounselling.Ichoseacareerwherelisteningisimportant,formeasthe

52 counsellorandformyclientstoo.Forthemtoknowtheyarebeinglistenedto,sometimesforthe firsttime,isavitalpartoftheirtherapy.Ialsousedtolovethejourneyintowork,travellingonthe littlebusthatdroveouttothesmallervillagesfromthemarkettownwhereIhadmypractice, becauseitgavemeplentyofopportunityforearwigging,andlisteningtothemarvellouslocal accent. ButmuchasIlovedthequietnessofthebeachandthelaid-backlifestyleinasmallSuffolk coastalvillage,Iwasquitehappytogetawayfortheoccasionalweekendandexperiencethe freneticloudnessoflifeinLondon.Thecontrastwasincredible;thecityneverseemedtosleep, therewasalwaysnoiseofsomekind,thoughmyfatherrightlysaidthatthecountrysideisrarely silent,thereareusuallynoisesofsomekindatallhoursofthenight,ifyou Listen .Hewaskeento pointoutthedifferencebetween‘hearing’and‘listening’wasmyfather.MuchasIlikedthe change,Iwasalwaysgladtogetbackhomethough. AndreallylisteningledmetomeetJack,myhusband,forthefirsttime.Itwashisvoice,heard acrossabusybar,thatattractedmetohim,itstoodoutfromallthosevoicesaroundhim,almostas ifIwastunedintoit,listeningfortheloveofmylifeperhaps.Loveatfirstsoundthiswas,forme. Loveatfirstsightofmyredhair,greeneyesandfreckles,itwasforJack. Ourmarriedlifehasseenuslivingindifferentpartsoftheworld,thankstoJack’swork,manyof themafeastforallthesenses.Sometimesexotic,beguiling,smelly(notalwaysinagoodway either!),vibrantandmemorable,eachinit’sownway.Butwhenwe’dhadenoughofthislifeand wantedtoputdownroots,itwasbacktotheEnglishcoastwherewefeltdrawn.HereJackcould pursuehisloveofpaintingandwalking,andIcouldgetbacktotakingpictureswithmycamera andgrowagardenforthefirsttime.Butmostofallforme,itwasthesightandthesoundofthe sea,bringingbackmemoriesofchildhood. Shecouldrecapturethepeacefulnessofthisnichebetweenschoolhouseandchurchbrokenonly bythetrainhuffinguptheinclineenroutetotheseaandthechildrenspillingfromtheoldschoolat the3.30bell. 59 DERSINGHAMDAYCENTREFORTHEELDERLY OverthelasttwoweeksinMarchandthefirstinAprilourMemberswere busygettingtheirEasterBonnetsreadyfortheEasterLunchandPartyonthe 27 th April.ThemorningteamofVolunteerswereonsiteearlyand,asthiswas justtwodaysbeforetheRoyalWedding,wecombinedourtabledecorations withSpringflowersandlittleUnionJacks.ThankstoRodSaundersfordecoratingtheChurch HallwithflagsandbuntingandalargepictureoftheRoyalCouple.RuthMountainandour Volunteerswerebusyinthekitchen,preparingthenow traditionalturkeylunch,andbythetimethefirstMembers arrivedonthetransport,coffeeandteaswerereadyto welcomethem.Atmid-dayMembersandVolunteers togetherwiththeirGuests,fortyinall,satdowntolunch. Bythetimethetableshadbeenclearedourentertaineron key-board,LeighMurfet,wasreadytostart.Hesoonhad everyonesingingalongtoalltheoldtraditionalfavourites sungontheseoccasions,andeveryonejoinedinwithgreat enthusiasm.TheVolunteersdancingdisplaykepttheparty atmospheregoingandevensomeMembersjoinedin,one withtheaidofawalker.ThenitwastimefortheEaster BonnetCompetition.Thejudgeswalkedaroundinspecting thevarious bonnetsandthennamedthetwo winners.Theprizeforthebest lady’sbonnetwasawardedto MrsJuneDormanandthe gentleman’sprizewenttoMr KenFreeman.Eachwas presentedwithaChocolate EasterRabbit.Teawasserved withbutteredhotcrossbunsand thenthepartyendedwith anothersingsongandthe distributionofEastereggstoalltheMembers.UnfortunatelyfiveofourMemberswereilland unabletobethere,butwemadesurethatEasterEggswereputasideforthem. Hens’eggs ‘What’syourfavouritefood?’askedBarney. ‘Idon’treallyknow,’answeredScoot.‘Ilikenuts-chestnuts,beechnutsandacorns.Mumgave mesomethathadbeenstoredoverthewinter.’ ‘Oh.That’swhatyourmumwilltellyoutoeat,’saidBarney,withalaugh.‘She’llsaythey’re goodforyourteeth.Buthaveyoutastedsoftfood,reallysoftfood?Itmaynotbegoodforyour teeth,butitdoesn’thalftastegood.’ Barneywasalwayssuggestingthattheyoungsquirrelsdidnewthings,triedthingsouttosee whattheywerelike.Hewasbiggerthantheotheryoungsquirrelsbecausehewasquiteabitolder. On14 th March,withourbikesontheroofofthecar,mygoodfriend andex-colleaguePatrickandIcrossedovertoCalaisontheimpressive SeaFranceRodin ferryanddroveontotheBelgianmunicipalityofYpres (pronounced “Eepr”) inWestFlanders;anotableareaaroundwhichthe salient frontlineprojectedintoenemyterritoryduringWorldWarI. Backin1914YpreswasstillFrenchspeaking–hencetheFrench spellingofthename,whichtheBritish Tommies readingitatfacevaluenicknamed “Wipers”. NowintheDutchspeakingareaofBelgium,youwouldbehardpressedtofindanyroadsign usinganythingotherthantheDutchspelling: Ieper, howevernotethatthefirstletterisacapital I, notan L assomehavereadit , hencemany confusingonlinereferencestothetotallywrong Leper . Notfar away,theVCCornerAustralianCemeterywithitsbronze Cobbers Memorial statueofawoundedsoldierbeingcarriedfromthebattlefield. consideredas“LynnRd”)TheRoadfromtheeighthmilestonetoLyeWood(LifeWoodperhaps?) wouldbeLynnRoad.(ManyvillagerstodayrememberthattheMainRoadfromBudgenstowards theCommonwasknownasCowLaneformanyyears.)ItwasdecidedthatfromTemperance Corner,(bythetrafficlights)toChurchCornerwouldbeChapelRoad.ChurchCornerto SandringhamHillCornerwouldbeChurchRoadandtheroadfromtheredowntotheLynnRoad wouldbeManorRoad.Ihaveyettofindoutwhenthewholestretchfromthechurchwascalled ManorRoad.OtherroadsthatwerestandardisedwereStationRoad,MillHouseRoad,HeathRoad andBrookRoadbutunfortunatelythealternativenameswerenotnoted.AtanothermeetinginApril thecouncildecidedwithregrettoabandontheannualAthleticsSportsMeeting.Thesesportswere inauguratedin1887andwerefirstheldonthelandadjacenttoDersinghamHallwithsubsequent holeforeverystakefromyeartoyear.TheForester’sHallwasthevenueforawellattended 78 meetinginMaytodecidehowthevillagewastomarktheforthcomingcoronation.Thefirst suggestionwastoconstructaroadtothebeach.TheChairman,Mr.Yaxley,pointedoutthatthis projecthadbeenunderdiscussionforatleastthirtyyearsandhadbeensuggestedin1901forthe EdwardV11coronation.Thesameproblemsexistednamelythedifficultyofobtainingrightstothe landoverwhichtheroadmusttravelandevenmoreimportantthesheerexpense.Onceagainthe projectwasrefused.(VVNo.50)ThenextsuggestionwasforthebuildingofavillageInstituteto provideacommonmeetingplaceforall.TheChairmanannouncedthatMrs.Tyldenof Ingoldisthorpethepatronofthelivinghadmadeanofferofmoneytocoverthecostofsucha building.Itwasagreedthatsuchakindoffershouldbeaccepted.ItwasonJune10 th thattheKing approvedthebuildingoftheHallonthewash-pitpasturetothesouthofMr.Jannoch’swoodclose towherethecattleshedsstood.MessrsJarvis&Co.ofLynnwereaskedtodrawuptheplans.Later inJulythecouncildecidedtobuildanadditionalroomtobeknownastheCoronationRoomand collectionsweremadearoundthevillage.InAugustthetenderfromMessrsGChambers&Sonwas acceptedandwouldincludetheadditionalroom.Theestimateforthewholebuilding,Hall,Men’s room,twoclassrooms,kitchenandofficecameto£705.3s.10d.Workstartedshortlyafterwardsand socialclub.InduecoursetheKinggrantedsomelandfortheprojectandthebuildingoftheclubon theLynnRoadwasstarted.AnothersuggestiontomarkthecoronationwasfromtheRev.Lewisto establishandmaintainanurseinthevillage.Therehadbeenseveralcasesofseriousillnessandhe thoughttherewasanurgentneedforanursewhoseserviceswouldbeatthedisposalofthepoor.He thought£60ayearwouldbesufficienttorunsuchascheme.Manyatthemeetingwerevery scepticalabouttheproposalanditseemedmostsharedtheopinionthatthenursewouldonlybenefit thebetteroff.Itwasvoteddown.AMr.Leggettproposedanopenairswimmingpoolatthe Emblems,thehouseoppositeTheFeathers,whereitwouldbepossibletoconvertthenatural facilitiesalreadyexistingthereatasmallcost.Thiswasnotconsideredpractical.Otherideasput forward,Isuspectbyvillagersgettingalittleboredwiththelengthyprocess,wereforaPigand
