Surfers Against Sewage’s innovative environmental education programme visited Scotland and Northern Ireland in early October. The SAS education team began in North Berwick on the East coast of Scotland and finished at the beautiful Castlerock Beach in Northern Ireland. Over the course of the week the tour visited schools, youth groups and sports clubs in coastal communities inspiring almost 600 young people with SAS’s unique take on coastal environmentalism. This was the second stage of this year’s highly successful educational tour; in May SAS visited 13 schools and universities in the North East of England, engaging with over 1000 students on the threats facing their favourite waves, oceans and beaches SAS’s educational sessions provide up-to- date information and local actions that can be taken by the students to tackle marine pollution, complementing the cross curricular syllabus’ at the primary and secondary levels. Sessions are delivered in classrooms & assemblies, and include a bespoke presentation and interactive environmental board game, ‘Marineopoly’. The lessons cover SAS’s latest initiatives including campaigns on sewage pollution, marine litter, climate change, toxic chemicals, “Engaging, shipping and wave protection. So it’s vital we do all we can to reduce the UK’s carbon dioxide and support appropriate offshore renewable projects to help achieve these vital reductions. The UK has an abundance of offshore wave, wind and tidal energy and SAS supports the harnessing of these clean sustainable resources. However, there are a finite number of surfing spots and it’s important proposed offshore www.protectourwaves.org.uk developments recognise and protect these valuable assets. E-ON, the developers behind the proposed Rampion offshore wind farm have identified a potential loss of wave height of up to 22% for surfing beaches in and around Brighton. This is the biggest reduction in wave height we’ve known for an offshore renewables project. What is particularly alarming though is E-ON’s proposed mitigation for surfing was simply to ‘consult with stakeholder groups’. Consultation isn’t mitigation, an action that should reduce any identified impacts, it’s simply telling stakeholders what they are going to lose. pipeline | www.sas.org.uk 17 SETTING BEACH CLEAN RECORDS IN OLYMPIC YEAR
