We would like more contributions from anyone who has something to offer that will interest our readers, just email it to us for publishing.

There are vacancies on the Wilby Parish council as well as the Wilby Village hall. Anyone is welcome to join either or both these committees. You don’t have to be an expert or have specialist knowledge, just wanting to make Wilby a better place to live in is qualification enough.

We are trying to get the 100 club off the ground. It is an easy fund raiser where everybody gets the same chance to win whilst supporting the local church. Please help us with this.

Lastly apologies for the lateness of the magazine, we had a bit of a ‘crash’ but Alex has now started his new job and I am back from holiday. Hopefully back to normal now!

LETTER FROM THE RECTOR Address: The Rectory, 15 Noyes Avenue, Laxfield IP13 8EB Telephone: 01986 798136 Email: [email protected]

Dear Friends

Some weeks ago there was an item in the news about a priest who had abused a young child. A friend of mine asked me what I thought should happen to him. “He should be removed from the priesthood,” I said, “because the Church has to act responsibly about those to whom they entrust the pastoral care of others.” “Quite right,” he replied, “and God will send him to hell to burn for evermore.” He couldn’t have heard what I said, because it is one thing to say that such a person should be removed from a position in which he can harm others and quite another to say that he should be expelled from the Church, forbidden its sacraments, denied its fellowship and consigned to everlasting punishment. As Christians we believe in a God who saves and forgives and rejoices at repentance. So although my friend and myself both claimed the name of Christian I couldn’t help feeling that we didn’t worship the same God.

That we live in a multi-cultural society and that in reality we all worship the same God have long been the politically correct things to say. For some years now there has been pressure in our schools to teach that all religions are the same sort of thing – all have holy people and holy books and holy places. Such a view, however, lacks integrity, because what the various faiths teach and believe about those people, books and places can be quite different. As opposed to political correctness, honesty compels us to say that we do not all worship the same God.

As Christians we do not worship a god who decrees that women accused of adultery should be executed, in public. We have Biblical authority for that (St John 8.1-11). We do not believe in a god who promises that suicide bombers who kill and injure their fellow human beings will be rewarded in heaven. We do not believe that we have to earn our own salvation by living many lives in different forms. We believe in God who loved us enough to become one of us in Jesus of Nazareth and who saves and forgives and restores.

That is not say that we may not recognize truth and goodness in whatever faith we find it. Nor is it to say that only those who come to Christ through the explicit doorway of the Christian faith will find life with God. That is the way God offers to us – and it is not for us to decree what door he may leave open for others. But we do believe that salvation was made possible for all because of what Jesus did in the time of his incarnation.

In the early days of the Christian faith the Roman Empire was a multi-cultural society with many gods – and if the Christians had agreed to worship the Emperor Christ would have been allowed as just one more god among the many. The Christians refused – and were persecuted – because for them Christ was the Only One. He must be that for us today – otherwise our faith will become just one more stream emptying itself into the sea of many faiths.

David

LETTER FROM THE PRIEST Address: Crane Lodge, Bickers Hill, Laxfield IP13 8DP Telephone: 01986 798901 Email: [email protected]

Dear Friends,

Next month many of us will have, or at least attend, a bonfire but do you know the origins of the bonfire? Many think that it marks the burning at the stake of Guido Fawkes and while that is what we ascribe it to today, its origins go back thousands of years, right to the time when bronze-age settlers began farming.

Management of scarce resources dictated that animals were slaughtered in autumn as winter feed was not available and so it was more economical to only keep a few alive for breeding and to preserve the flesh of the others for consumption during the winter. But what to do with the bones?

At the same time, farmers became aware that soil can become tired and depleted and as a result crop yields would fall, but by sowing waste and in particular ash back on to the land it replenished the nutrients and helped to maintain good crops. The answer was simple: burn the animal bones and recycle the ash on to the land. This fire became known as a ‘bone-fire’. It was mistakenly believed at one time that the word ‘bon’ was taken from the French for ‘good’, but it has since been discovered that this is not the case.

What this illustrates to us is that there is nothing new about resource management or care for the environment or more to the point, recycling.

We are repeatedly bombarded with warnings about the environment and depletion of resources and there is a danger that we become deaf to these pleas but ignoring them would possibly be the biggest crime these generations would ever commit.

The environment in which we live is a gift from God, but we only hold it temporarily as trustees for future generations, our children, our grandchildren and their descendants. Being able to buy food from supermarkets is a wonderful innovation, but it distances us from the reality that those ancient farmers faced, and so we don’t concern ourselves overly much with the destruction of God’s creation, instead we turn to ‘throw away and pollute’. Out of sight, out mind. Ask yourself before sending anything to landfill: could this in any way be used to benefit the world in which we live?

Enjoy your bonfire but please check it first for hedgehogs and other hibernating creatures!

With my prayers and best wishes,

Ron

PARISH COUNCIL NEWS

Wilby Parish Council Ian Williamson, Chair 01379 388034 Julie Collet, Clerk 01986 798258

Your Parish Council Parish Council will have met on Wednesday September 26th before you read this but due to editorial deadlines for publication of the Parish News this is being written for submission prior to that meeting, it’s a bit like time travel but without the tardis! So this report is an interim one for now. The formal record of the meeting on September 26th will of course be posted on the village web-site.

Footpaths Cllr Karen Collins will have updated us on her findings regarding the possibility of a proper footpaths map for the village.

Potholes Some potholes have now been attended to, in many cases because it’s been the time of year for tar spray and chippings. Please continue to contact the Parish Council by e-mail or Highways directly if you consider a pothole, rut, road sign or verge needs attention. There is a County website to report this, www.suffolk.gov.uk Please take the time to report problems and help make our roads safer.

Planning Applications As we write this there are no planning applications on the agenda to consider.

Wilby Neighbourhood Plan Cllr Richard Woolgrove is standing down from the Volunteer Group and as Co -ordinator due to time constraints. Our thanks go to Richard for the hard work he has put in so far. We will hopefully have appointed a new Co- ordinator at the September meeting. If you need information, wish to make comment at any stage or would like to be added to the circulation list for communications (relating only to the neighbourhood plan) please contact us.

GDPR (General Data Protection Regulations) Julie our clerk has now put a huge amount of work into this and whilst it seems an unnecessary burden for us, it’s the law that we protect the data we hold in the way that we’re told! Please be assured we always have and always will protect any personal information to the best of our abilities.

De-fibrillator Thanks go to Cllr Robin Cross who is now looking after our “de-fib” (in case you don’t know it’s in the ‘phone kiosk outside the school). Any problems can be reported to Robin or Julie our clerk.

Vacancies We still have two vacancies and there is no representation for the Village Hall so if you think you have the time and skills (there’s no need to be highly academically qualified!) that could help contribute to the future of our Community please contact Julie our clerk for more details.

Next Parish Council Meeting. 7th November, 7.30pm at Wilby Coronation Hall. We would like to see more members of the public! Please come along if there is anything you need to say and let us know so that we can work to represent you. A formal record of Parish Council business can be found on the village web-site http://wilby.suffolk.cloud/ along with other information on the village and upcoming events. WILBY VILLAGE HALL PRESENTS

John Otway & Wild Willy Barrett ‘The Final Straw Tour’

Pigeonhole this duo at your peril, John Otway and Wild Willy Barrett are back on the road with their aptly named Final Straw Tour. Still going after 40 years and still loved for their total in-yerface originality, the contrast between the dead pan humour of Barrett and mad onstage antics of Otway are hilarious to watch. John’s lyrical genius and Willy’s outstanding musicianship (he seems to play almost every stringed instrument known to man, plus a few hybrids of his own making!) almost become an added extra.

Ever keen to add a new dimension to the show, Willy says he is going back to their roots with a new addition to his array of instruments, which he calls the Les Dawson Thumb. The idea stems from the guitar made by Willy’s dad in 1965 from an old guitar neck and a scaffold plank, which became affectionately known as the Les Dawson (a satirical reference to the much loved Gibson Les Paul) and was used on many of the early tracks, including Really Free.

For any Otway/Barrett virgins out there who don’t know what to expect, be prepared for everything from bare-chested there min playing to wah wah wheelie bin as the duo jump from one hit and 40 near misses to another: An amazing and irreverent performance by two master entertainers. Be sure not to miss this tour as Willy has hinted that it is “time gentlemen please” for his involvement in the turbulent duo’s existence in order to pursue a long -time interest in a more musical twilight and further experimental projects over his remaining years.

Nostalgic Walks Michael Emeny reflects on the Brundish of his youth

On a visit back to his home village, Brundish, Michael took a walk around old haunts which brought back many memories. His first stop was to look inside 1 Sunnyside, where he was brought up, before heading to Wilby where he called in at the primary school and told them he was at the school from 1955 to 1962. He met Gerald Western at the grain store which he remembered being built and being there with his dad Herbert at harvest time.

Several years ago Michael did some research on the history of Brundish for his dad. His dad was interested in Brundish Hall which stood north of Brundish church before being dismantled in very late 1929 early 1930's. His dad told him after it was dismantled is was shipped to the USA and rebuilt there. (There is another story that says it didn’t get there and is stored somewhere in Suffolk.) His dad was a young boy about 13 when it was dismantled and he went with a friend to watch the men working. They were numbering the beams as they took them down. After the men had gone for the day his dad and his friend went into the Hall and started to get up to mischief by pulling some plaster off a wall. They found a sealed door behind the plaster but then got frightened and ran off. Later he was told the workmen had found a sealed room with an opened bible inside.

Here is a picture of his dad looking out of the old shoemakers hut at Sunnyside cottages

VILLAGE HALL NEWS Wilby Coronation Hall

POND UPDATE As you will have hopefully noticed the pond has been dredged, re-landscaped and new fencing erected. We hope that you all agree that this has smartened up the exterior of the hall. We look forward to the last stage which will be planting up and installing an antique pond pump as a souvenir of it’s former importance as a village pump pond. Unfortunately due to the depth of the pond it is unsuitable for a dipping platform.

SCARECROW FESTIVAL/ Summer BBQ 20th - 26th August Sadly this was a bit of a washout but thank you to those that did join in by either creating a scarecrow or attending the BBQ at the hall. Val Hambling won the scarecrow competition with a beautifully created scarecrow, we wish her well with her hip replacement operation.

QUIZ NIGHT - Friday September 14th 8pm Thank you to all eight teams that entered the quiz night, team ‘Worlygigs’ from Worlingworth proved worthy of the first prize on the night.

AGM We need new trustees please come and join us. Thursday 25th October 7pm - We three musketeers, Ian, Tracie and myself soldier on as the sole trustees of the village hall and we are really thankful for the support of several other people in the village. As with any organisation or charity there is always room for opportunities and plenty of scope for criticism, but it is fair to say that many hands make light work. We would really welcome new ideas and/or commitment that anyone could bring to our team. So, please come along to our AGM and help us work together in maintaining our village hall as a viable and sustainable facility for the future.

Commemoration of the centenary of the end of WWI. 11th November, c.11.45pm at Brundish Village Hall

Young men of the village will read a poem for each of the Brundish men who died in the Great War, and we will try to say a little about each man. Afterwards we hope to be able to serve beer and wine (as those men would no doubt have wished). Volunteers to recite poems please contact Alex McNab ([email protected]). Those with any information about the fallen, please contact Paul Smiddy ([email protected]; 01379 388298). The event will start shortly after the conclusion of the armistice service on the village green. Film nights this season
