THE RUSSIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH Department for External Church Relations THE RUSSIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH Department for External Church Relations Patriarch Kirill’s Easter message to heads of non- Orthodox churches His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russian has sent Easter greetings to heads of non- Orthodox churches. Among the addressees are Patriarch Tawadros II of the Coptic Church, Pope Francis of Rome, Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II of the Syrian Jacobite Church, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos Karekin II of All Armenians, Catholicos Aram I of Cilicia, Catholicos-Patriarch Mar Gewargis II Sliva of the Assyrian Church of the East; Maronite Patriarchate Bechara Boutros Cardinal al-Rahi; Metropolitan Baselios Mar Thomas Paulose II of Malankara, Patriarch Abune Mathias of Ethiopia, and others. The message states: I cordially salute you on the Radiant Easter of the Lord and address to you the life-asserting greeting: CHIST IS RISEN! Today the great feast of the feasts has come, according St. John Chrysostom, the banquet of faith and the richness of goodness. The rising of the Savour from the dead has destroyed the stronghold of hell and dissipated the darkness of sin. Let us rejoice on this wonderful day, for through the resurrection the human race has been granted eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord (Rom. 6:23). Sharing the joy of the feast with those who are near and who are far, let us join efforts to assert in society the intransient moral values, help those who suffer from injustice, who are persecuted or endangered by the spreading coronavirus infection. I wish you spiritual and physical strength and God’s help in fulfilling your lofty ministry, and to your flock I wish peace and welfare. + Kirill Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Source: https://mospat.ru/en/news/45583/ Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org).

  • New Development in the Ethio-Egypt Relations Over the Hydro-Politics of Nile: Questioning Its True Prospects

Email: [email protected]; Phone: +251-9 21 59 71 52 Accepted 19 March 2015 The central objective of this study is to examine the true prospects of the recently established amicable relations between Ethiopia and Egypt. To this end, the researcher employed qualitative methodology. Accordingly, data were gathered from secondary sources mainly from books, journal articles, unpublished materials and websites. Based on the data analyzed, the study came up with findings which show a great suspicion on the sustainability of the newly established cordial relations following the coming into power of president El-Sisi in Egypt. The study outlined the following basic reasons: the still persisting mistrust among Egyptians, the existence of anti-Ethiopia forces, absolute dependence of Egypt on Nile, the possibility of using visits for spying purpose, the possibility of buying a time and the inherent worry on the development of Ethiopia. Thus, the paper concludes that the new friendly approach of El-Sisi may be a new tactic to pursue the old objective. Following this conclusion, the study suggests that there is a need, on the part of Ethiopia, to be skeptical and keep a watchful eye on the development while keeping ahead the friendly relations.

Amen! We members of the Global Alliance of Tegaru Evangelical Christians (GATEC) who reside in various countries around the world, collectively pronounce our full support to His Holiness Abune Mathias, Patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox church. The Ethiopian prime minister Abiy Ahmed, his emissary president Isaiah of Eritrea, special forces and militias of the Amhara regional state, the Republic of Somalia, with the support of drones from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) waged war against the government and people of Tigray which claimed the lives of thousands of civilians and displaced millions. Minors have been murdered in front of their parents, countless girls and women have been gang-raped, and personal and public properties have been looted or destroyed. Since the war started on November 4th, 2020 the people of Tigray have been subjected to atrocities unparalleled in the history of the country. Abiy Ahmed and his allies deliberately blocked telephone lines, internet, radio, and television and denied access to independent media while at the same time, used government-controlled media to misinform the world about the war and the crimes. However, the international media outlets and human rights advocates were able to expose these atrocities. As a result, the European Union parliament, the USA, UK, the Netherlands, and other governments as well as the UN Security Council strongly condemned the genocide and ethnic cleansing taking place in Tigray and called the Ethiopian and Eritrean governments to refrain from these acts.

  • Ethiopia 2018 International Religious Freedom Report
ETHIOPIA 2018 INTERNATIONAL RELIGIOUS FREEDOM REPORT Executive Summary The constitution codifies the separation of religion and the state, establishes freedom of religious choice, prohibits religious discrimination, and stipulates the government shall not interfere in the practice of any religion, nor shall any religion interfere in the affairs of the state. On January 20, security forces fired teargas on a group of youth singing politically charged messages in Woldia town during Epiphany celebrations. The Amhara regional government pledged to investigate the incident. The local Human Rights Council (HRCO) reported security forces subsequently shot and killed eight Orthodox Church members; this was followed by further protests and killings. On February 16, the government declared a state of emergency (SOE) that restricted organized opposition and antigovernment protests, which also affected religious activities. The House of Peoples’ Representatives voted on June 5 to lift the SOE, effective immediately. There were no reports of religious communities engaging in protests either before or after the lifting of the SOE. On August 1, representatives of the exiled synod of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church (EOC), headed by Patriarch Abune Merkorios, returned to the country and reunited with the synod in Ethiopia headed by Patriarch Abune Mathias. The reconciliation effort had the direct support of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali and ended a 26-year schism in the Orthodox Church. On August 4, three Muslim scholars, Sheik Seid Ahmed Mustafa, Sheik Jabir Abdella, and Sheik Sherif Muhdin, returned to the country after decades of exile in Saudi Arabia. The scholars told local media they returned in response to Prime Minister Abiy’s calls to return and build the country.
