[Chenopodiaceae]) fields in southern Idaho; this contrasts with the approximately equal sex ratio typically observed within fields. Peak observation of mating pairs coincided with peak diurnal abundance of flies. Volatiles released by individual male and female flies were sampled from 08:00 to 24:00 hours in the laboratory using solid-phase microextraction and analyzed using gas chromatog- raphy/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Eleven compounds were uniquely detected from males. -
Myennidini, a New Tribe of Otitinae (Diptera: Ulidiidae)

Vol. 35-36, 2005/6, pp. 497-586 Myennidini, a New Tribe of the Subfamily Otitinae (Diptera: Ulidiidae), with Discussion of the Suprageneric Classification of the Family Elena Kameneva1 and Valery Korneyev2 ABSTRACT The diagnoses of all six tribes of Ulidiidae are revised. The Myennidini, new tribe (subfamily Otitinae), is defined to include 14 genera: Myennis Robineau- Desvoidy, Oedopa Loew, Stictomyia Bigot, Paroedopa Coquillett, Pseudotephritis Johnson, Callopistromyia Hendel, Stictoedopa Brèthes, Pseudotephritina Malloch, Dyscrasis Aldrich, Ulidiotites Steyskal, Pseudodyscrasis Hernández, Arborotites Barraclough, Namibotites Barraclough, and Neodyscrasis Kameneva and Korneyev, n. gen. (type species: Pseudodyscrasis steyskali Hernández, 1988). These genera were previously erroneously assigned either to the Ulidiini or to the Pterocallini; the latter tribe is shown here to belong to the subfamily Ulidiinae. A phylogenetic analysis is provided for the tribes of Ulidiidae and the genera of Myennidini. Most genera are redescribed, and the distributions of all the species are discussed, including new records. The following synonymy is established: Myennis tricolor Hendel, 1909 = Myennis nebulosa Krivosheina and Krivosheina, 1997, n. syn. ARS research comprises 21 National Programs and is conducted at 108 laboratories spread throughout the United States and overseas by over 2,200 full-time scientists within a total workforce of 8,000 ARS employees. The research in National Program 304, Crop Protection and Quarantine, is organized into 140 projects, conducted by 236 full-time scientists at 41 geographic locations. At $102.8 million, the fiscal year (FY) 2007 net research budget for National Program 304 represents almost 10 percent of ARS’s total FY 2007 net research budget of $1.12 billion. -

This issue is brought to you during the Covid-19 pandemic, with many of you likely cooped up at home, with insect collections worldwide closed for business! Perhaps for this reason this issue is pretty heavy, not just with articles but with images. There were many submissions to the Flies are Amazing! section and the Dipterists Lairs! I hope you enjoy them! Just to touch on an error I made in the Fall issue’s introduction… In outlining the change to “Spring” and “Fall” issues, instead of April and October issues, I said “But rest assured, I WILL NOT produce Fall issues after 20 December! Nor Spring issues after 20 March!” But of course I meant no Spring issues after 20 June! Instead of hitting the end of spring, I used the beginning. Oh well… Thank you to everyone for sending in such interesting articles! I encourage all of you to consider contributing articles that may be of interest to the Diptera community, or for larger manuscripts, the Fly Times Supplement series. ABSTRACT WALLACE, CHARLES REID. A Molecular and Morphological Analysis of Ulidiidae (Diptera: Tephritoidea). (Under the direction of Brian M. Wiegmann). Ulidiidae (Diptera: Tephritoidea) is a relatively small family of true flies, called the “picture-winged flies” for their patterned wings. Its relationship to the other members of Tephritoidea, and its monophyly, has been well established, through both morphological and molecular analysis. Its subfamilial relationships, however, have received limited molecular analysis, having had a significant cross-section of the family’s taxa represented in only two molecular studies (Galinskaya et al. 2014, Han and Ro 2016). The most contemporary treatment of the classification of the family is by Kamenev and Korneyev (2006), according to which the Ulidiidae is divided into two subfamilies (Otitinae, Ulidiinae), each of which is further delineated into tribes (Cephaliini, Myennidini, Otitini; Lipsanini, Pterocallini, Seiopterini, Ulidiini, respectively), with an additional incertae sedis group of genera within the Otitinae. These classifications are based solely on morphological analysis, and there remain multiple outstanding questions of the placement and monophyly regarding the tribes or several large, diverse, or enigmatic genera. Here, using the next-generation sequencing method of anchored hybrid enrichment, I investigate the phylogeny of Ulidiidae with particular attention paid to the constituency and monophyly of hypothesized tribes, monophyly of the two sub-families, and placement of genera. Through maximum likelihood analysis, my results establish strong support for the separation of Ulidiidae into two monophyletic subfamilies, but challenges the assignment of Myennidini to the Ulidiidae, and potentially of Seiopterini to the Ulidiinae. It additionally suggests the paraphyly of the tribe Pterocallini with respect to both Myennidini and Lipsanini, but supports the monophyly of all other tribes. -
Soil Persistence of Metarhizium Anisopliae Applied to Manage Sugarbeet Root Maggot in a Cover Crop Microenvironment

Central Avenue, Sidney, MT 59270 and 4Plant Sciences Department, North Dakota State University, Fargo, ND 58108 Abstract: The sugarbeet root maggot, Tetanops myopaeformis (Röder), is a major insect pest of sugarbeet, Beta vulgaris L., in North Dakota, Minnesota, and Idaho. Three biocontrol field trials using the insect pathogen Metarhizium anisopliae (Metch.) Sorok. ATCC 62176 in conjunction with cover crops were conducted in 2002-2004. Granular and aqueous spray formulations of M. anisopliae were applied in furrow to replicated plots at 8 x 1012 viable conidia/ha. Oat (Avena sativa L.) and rye (Secale cereale L.) cover crops were planted prior to sugarbeet at three rates to create different microenvironments for the fungus. Soil samples were collected at 0, 30, or 60 d after treatment (DAT). Significantly higher numbers of conidia were detected in soil samples collected immediately after application in fungus spray plots compared to granule plots. This suggested delayed activation and proliferation of M. anisopliae conidia on granules, which has also been observed in the laboratory. Soil sampling and dilution plating results indicated a 90% decline in conidial viability for the aqueous formulation within 30 DAT. In 2002, a 1.5 to 7.7-fold increase in conidial density per gram of soil occurred between 0 and 60 DAT in plots treated with M.
